2nd on those comments! First heard Marsden on the last album by the band BABE RUTH (check out his soloing on "Living A Lie"!!!), then in of course Whitesnake. While working at a radio station in the mid/late-80's, we had an album come into the studio by this band called ALASKA....Bernie again, this time doing similar rock to what Gary Moore had earlier in the decade. A few years back there was a great 2-disc compilation of his work in all kinds of bands from the 70's onward.....fairly sure that it's been discontinued as I think the last I priced it on amazon, it was up around 100 bucks or so.
omg, this is incredible,Ian Paice grooving like a freight train, such a consistently solid and versatile drummer, the most under received in rock, give him some love,Ian Paice rules.
Tony Ashton is a showman and in this set-up he's worth his weight in gold. Off - beat songs about off - beat characters, he plays it beautifully and makes you forget you're there to see two guys from Deep Purple. Really glad I was at The Bham show.
Great Line up... lets not forget Bernie Marsden on Guitar (whitesnake) and Paul Martinez (Robert Plant first 3 solo works) on Bass... classic line up of fantastic musicians...
glammer-agreed. I would add Lovehunter, Ready n Willing and Saints n Sinners to that list. It seemed like a different record company every album, so he really didn't get promoted all that well in the states.
Totally blown away and utterly pissed-off I was never turned-on to this before! I can't believe this project had never gained more notoriety! I grew-up listening to DP. Lord and Paice are 2 of my all-time favorite musicians. And now at the age of 50 I'm discovering this?! It's like twilight zone out there! At least I discovered new "amazing" music in an era when "amazing" music is a thing of the distant past. Lest we forget to mention for all guitarists out there, what a pleasure to watch the “BEAST” in action!
I am feeling just like you....listening to these for the first time in my life, had no idea this proect even existed...I am 44 and i listen to Purple since I was 8.....
Mario Alberto Carpegna As a 50 year old, I rarely find myself getting excited about contemporary music! Maybe it's that compression thing! :) And yet, I'm still continuously discovering gems from the Golden Era of music, the 60s' and 70s'. It's a never ending journey... thank God!
I was a little luckier than you , landing in England in 75 @ 17 and looking forward to see DP live , no chance no concerts and the band broke up in 76 ,for me Paice and Lord were gods and in one of my visits to London 5 I was based in Liverpool dpoing uni ) I fell on this gathering of stupendous musicians , I dont remember if it was at the BBC or somewhere else in London ,Ashton was a real mystery for me then but he was a discovery great showmanship and charisma , the music was of the best I ever heard a mixture of all I loved Rock, R&B with a touch of Funk , RIP Lord Ashton long live Paice .
Totally agree whit, this project was so undarrated and still in the same stuff, seems like the good music must be hide for the masses, instead let the people get this gems lik this, people only goes to flow their ears whit cheap and so stiiiiinky shit as MTV's music try to impose to all us...
Graham-you've stood on the same stage the Beatles played on then. There's even a show from 1962 that's been released from a stint at the Star club. Well done.
Brilliant stuff. Tony looks perpetually puzzled and/or lost, Bernie's on fire and Paul Martinez impresses with his bass work. A sadly short-lived but hugely interesting band.
He sure as hell was. He was supposedly quite uncomfortable performing front and center, serving primarily as a singer and frontman, with his keyboards set up around him providing a safe haven of comfort. He was knocking down a few stiff drinks before live shows to relax, one night he stormed on stage a minute ahead of time and the stage lights were still off. There was an orchestra pit in front of the stage and he waltzed right off the stage and fell 15 feet or so into the pit.
Tony Ashton reminds me a lot of Alex Harvey. Not so much a singer as a storyteller. He also has a great stage presence as did A H. Really enjoyed this piece of nostalgia!
@@juniorpontes4620 Bernie and Paul have also left us. As have the McKinley sisters - who sang backing on the album and presumably here. Leaving little Ian as the Sole survivor.
Just pure quality all round.Seems like the British Steely Dan.They clearly lifted one riff straight off the cheeky buggers. And I think Tony's voice has a real frailty and haunting sound which we'll never hear again.Beautiful.
I'm 40 seconds in and I like this Trip better than Purple, Rainbow etc.. this I can relate to. Tony Ashton is Fucking Cool and the Riffs are Ace. What a Groove. Can they keep this up?
Comprei o álbum Malice in Wonderland em 1977 e desde então o ouço frequentemente. 👍🌞✌️☕️😎🇧🇷
Excellent stuff, and made all the more interesting reading Bernie's book. He said during the performance he was watching over Tony Ashton like a "mother hen". What a great band and tight as you like.
I was having a cassete copy of Malice in Wonderland back at my young days. I still find the music in my head and never forget it. Very nice to find this great concert on youtube and listen to it now....... added with some beers on my older days. Thanx for the upload, I really like it!
Thank you for uploading. I also saw this on the box first time round and have looked for this for some time. Tony Ashton is my most favourite artist of all time - just so full of character - I bet he had more friends than I've had hot dinners.
I was introduced to these mad men years back by my brother-in-law and to this date I'm not sure if I have ever loved an album as much as Malice in Wonderland. Great musicians and I loved the singing on the album by Tony, but certainly does no justice to this live show. Marsden would have done a better job by far, but others could have been involved as well. Such good music.
I was lucky enough to see PAL shortly after this broadcast. The tour ended prematurity after Tony Ashton broke his leg falling off stage and the band folded. I somehow managed to see the rest of Purple in various other bands before I saw the band as a whole at Knebworth 1985.
Phil Siverns....Tony didn't break his leg. This was my first tour on the sound crew, We did the UK part and the rest of what was going to be a world tour was cancelled due to poor ticket sales, very unfortunately👍🇬🇧
Stein-they were the best rock years and not just because we lived them. Look at the personnel from 70's bands today. So many of them still out there. Even a boatload of 60's guys still doing it.
Wow, I've been a Purple fan for decades (and been aware of the PAL name for just as long), but this is the first time to actually hear what PAL sounded like. I had been expecting a keyboard-heavy prog indulgence, but this is very different. Lots of guitar too for balance, thanks to Bernie Marsden. Thanks for posting!
with the exception of when Mssrs. Lord and Paice were in the band, Bernie Marsden was the best thing about Whitesnake. Check out the song 'Outlaw' from 'Lovehunter'. That's Mr. Marsden singing.
Just read Bernie Marsdens book and came here to listen to that Band.Great stuff also verry different from the DP stuff I grew up with. Always been a DP and Rainbow fan and did not care much about Whitesnake or Bernie . But when I meet Mr. Marsden in 2015 he blew me away with his nice personality and turned me into his music. Thank you Bernie!
Like many, rediscovering this band - after 15-18 years. Had the album, when cassette were still available. Of course discovered this through DP. Still a huge fan of DP, Paice, Lord. 3 from the above line up are in Whitesnake (Ready n Willin) album - my fav Whitesnake line up and album. Love it.
I couldn't dig this when I was younger, I wasn't hip to Bolin & Come Taste The Band. I waived the MK II & MK III flag for much too long. My world opened up, to put it lightly, when I really gave MK IV the attention it rightly deserves. Then I went back to Stormbringer and discovered tracks like "Hold On" which is now one of my lifetime favorites. Much respect to Bernie Marsden now too.
in a live situation unbelievable good. Very tight, played with rhythm and power, better as on vinyl. Every musician shows his talent called" team spirit".
Tony Ashton was not a lead singer, he was a keyboard player and vocalist. He was uncomfortable but he tried his best. Paice and Lord wanted Coverdale and that would have worked for me. I remember this show was repeated on a Saturday afternoon. I think they only made one album. Listening to it now you can tell these musicians influenced by jazz.
I went to see them after this was on TV, the first many happy nights at the Glasgow Apollo. I preferred most of the solo stuff Deep Purple members were doing at the time to Purple.
Bernie Marsden, the most underrated guitar player of his generation. All the right notes, in all the right places. Fantastic all round performance.
I agree. My interest in whitesnake starts and ends with Bernie. A fantastic soulful player.

Bernie just published a memoir "Where's My Guitar?". I'm reading it now.

Gracious me, I was at the Birmingham Odeon gig too, amazing night
You're so right about Tony Ashton. Brilliant!
Great Line up... lets not forget Bernie Marsden on Guitar (whitesnake) and Paul Martinez (Robert Plant first 3 solo works) on Bass... classic line up of fantastic musicians...
Thanks ! I was wondering who they were . Lots of Excellence here ! and even more Potential ! wb

The early r'n'b Whitesnake was better than all that 80s nonsense Coverdale did. Northwinds was an underrated album.

I shared the stage with Tony at the Star Club Hamburg in the sixties when he played my Hammond....wonderful and sadly missed....

Tony Ashton is amazingly charismatic!
Very histrionic, theatrical in a good way. He makes artists like Arthur Brown, Captain Beefheart, Daevid Allen or Chris Farlowe come to my mind too.
