Set dramatically on the coastal clifftops of Cornwall, Tintagel Castle is linked to myth and legend. Scale the mighty ruins that has inspired writers, artists and royalty for centuries.
The site of Tintagel Castle has been inhabited at least since the late Roman period, but it was during the 12th century that it became iconic. Geoffrey of Monmouth named it as the place where King Arthur was conceived and these Arthurian associations may have inspired Richard, Earl of Cornwall, to build a castle at Tintagel in the 1230s.
Regardless, Tintagel is an enchanting site for visitors. See artefacts discovered at the site and an innovative 3D model of the headland's development through time. Outside climb the 148 steps on to the island to pass through the wooden door into what was the Great Hall built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, then explore the beach below.

My paternal ancestors were from Cornwall. The history is astounding to me; the hardness of life; the challenges of such a wild place. Stunning.
I used to live in England about a year ago, when I was there we went visited Tintagel, and before the slates were placed on the bridge, we wrote our names on one of them. 😊 Sometimes I miss England.
These "postcards" are just so beautifully made! Thank you for such treats.

A few years since I visited, and the bridge hadn't been constructed so access was by the steps. It was a freezing cold day with driving rain, and absolutely treacherous! Well worth the effort though- if anything, the miserable weather made it even more atmospheric. I'd love to visit again, by bridge, on a beautifully calm and sunny day though!
Awesome views. Thank you.
People who said history sucks show this to them maybe they will change their mind
