  • We get our first plot point towards the origin of The Burn, but it won't be explored because Book's home planet is calling and that's more important than solving the Burn. So, it's a filler episode.

After hearing this review, I'm reminded of a piece of advice from a veteran writer I once read when I was getting into writing: "Always have your ending figured out". Essentially, the writer suspected that a lot of unfinished fanfiction on the site he was on suffered from a severe lack of focus. A lack of focus brought about by new writers that were so excited on writing about a cool character or concept that they write a couple of chapters and then abandon the story after the first or second writer's block hits. Or they meander around the place, constantly changing storylines without ever properly finishing the previous ones before finally getting bored and abandoning the story like a drunk teenager after he crashed the neighbor's stolen Ferrari. Thus, the veteran writer's conclusion is that fanfiction writers should think about what kind of ending they want for their story and think through how they want to get to that ending with the characters and concepts they want to write about.
This episode (and indeed, much, if not all, of Star Trek Discovery) gives me the feeling that none of the writers here have any clue where they want to go with any of this. They have their cool character (Burnham) and concepts (the token crewmembers and whatever random sci-fi stuff they can throw into the show) and feel that simply showing them off in cool ways is enough to get them by. The fact that we're this far into season three without any significant progress on figuring out what "The Burn" actually is show they really had no interest in it outside of the surface level mystery it provides. Which means the answers will be disappointing, assuming it isn't a J.J. style mystery box in the first place (Which, let's face it, it is).
In the end, I guess I'm just repeating what others have said more succinctly: STD writers are horrible fanfiction writers.

When these writers put together a story the process begins with all of the "stuff" the myriad of writers/producers want to jam into the episode with a secondary concern of following any coherent story and character development process. It is the perfect example of "too many cooks in the kitchen". More precisely, "too many BAD cooks".

@@kedst2000 TNG started a bit shaky, but you could see improvement within the first season, and when the Romulans appeared at the end, what Trek fan wouldn‘t want to tune in again? Season 2 progressed bicely, and by the 3rd season they had found their stride.
That said, very few tv series have an ending planned, I guess. It‘s hard to believe that they didn‘t really have any idea how to go on after Best Of Both Worlds Part 1. But that show had good writers and showrunners, who knew what would work, nd how to make stuff work within the established universe. It would have been the easiest thing to have Data come to the rescue all the time, he was the strongest in every sense. But what would have been the fun in that?

    • @kedst2000
      @kedst2000 3 года назад +2

Agreed. Data saving the day every week would have been boring and completely uninteresting. This parade of writers and producers are blinded by their misguided perception of what passes for engaging entertainment.

Your comment concerning the first officer acting more like a yeoman makes sense. These writers have no clue of how to write a first officer because they do not know how a first officer is supposed to function in the environment they are supposed to be in. I checked out on this show in the very first episode when MB walks off of the bridge in the middle of a battle without giving any valid excuse. "I have to go to my quarters" I think was the reason for leaving the bridge in an extreme situation, uggghhhh! These people have no business writing anything other than Hallmark Christmas shows. They have no experience or background in anything. They have nothing to draw upon and they are unwilling to learn anything concerning their subject matter.
Good analysis on your part as usual.

One thing that no-one seems to have picked up on - why are the Discovery crew still wearing 23rd century uniforms? They’ve been fully refit, so their replicators have the pattern of the 32nd C uniforms. But they are still wearing the old uniforms. Given its 900+ years later, it’s the equivalent of showing up for work dressed like a Viking!

Hey, I've caught up with you! At least on Discovery. Another great review, Script Doctor.
The big problem here is exactly what you pointed out: the interesting story is the one about the Burn, not Burnham's adventure on the planet of hunky empaths and sea fleas.

  • @andrewp.8406

Damn, Script Doctor...I think this is one of your best STD reviews. Two points you made stand out in particular, your joke about a set not being built for that scene made me laugh because that was probably the case. Second, you're bang on in spotting how B-plots seem to get priority over A-plots. I'm seriously convinced that this crack team of executive producers are the industry equivalent to snake oil salesmen. The television 'machine' has gotten to the point where some of these guys can B.S. the studios and investors so well into believing they have a grand new vision for the brand and they're going to see viewership like never before...hocus pocus alimagocus. The studios got sold a vision of Star Trek that probably doesn't resemble anything they were originally pitched, other than a litany of social agenda and identity politics talking points.

Yes, I can turn my brain off and watch the greatest nonsense, if it‘s entertaining and/or funny. But even then, as I commented on your video about time travel, it should be consistent nonsense 😉
I guess I really don‘t pay attention to detail here, because the writers couldn‘t bring me to care or be curoius about one single character in this show. In three seasons!

Seriously. This season should be about solving the mystery of the Burn. That is at least what they tell us on every episode. Yet they have done literally nothing to further investigate the cause. There was one episode dealing with the Burn. One out of nine (ten, if we consider the next weeks episode is just the second part of a two parter, that should give more background on why the Mirror Universe arc sucked back then and sucks even more now) and all they have accomplished is finding out it wasn't the Vulcans and some old ship trapped in a nebula maybe the center of attention. They have a freaking space ship, that go everywhere in the galaxy instantaneoulsy, they know where to look for answers and yet no one even thinks about doing something. Wasn't this supposed to be Starfleet? An organisation that sends out ships out into the unknown, to seek for fungi under some rocks on a desert planet (figuratively speaking)?
Instead the writers decided to leave the only interesting aspect of this horrible season aside and give us more of Burnham. God...If the intention of season three was to show us that this writers room can do worse if we dare them, we can call this season a total success. This is like Picard all over again, where you have to sit through eight entirely pointless episodes, dealing with nothing but virtue signaling, boring interpersonal relationships, massacres and absolutely horrible dialogues, that didn't contribute anything to anything. And for what? Just to find out that the reason for why the Romulans hated synths, why they instigated an attack on a Federation core world, even infiltrated Starfleet, was nothing to be worried about. 🤦‍♂️
I have no doubts this will happen to the Burn as well. It will be resolved in the last episode. And I am sure they will find the most unsatisfying explanantion for why the Burn happened, by simply stating Tilly farted dring her wormhole travel. Okay okay, I am kidding. But with these writers? Who knows what will happen...

Not only did the Starfleet not take the ship apart to replicate the spore drive and instead it's sending it on missions risking the loss of their ONLY CHANCE at replicating an alternative means of travel... their negligence leads to Adira making modifications to the drive UNBEKNOWNST TO ANYONE, which - for all we know - could damage the drive forever. Is this the "Idiocracy" movie Starfleet? What in the name of pixelated f**k is this?

The lack of damage on a CG crashed Discovery was the first clue. But maybe this is good news? Now they can’t pay their way to success the show will drop viewers, or the producers will focus on quality for a change
