In today's video we take a look at the Nicrew Internal Aquarium Filter!
I recently purchased this product off amazon after seeing my good friend @MDFishTanks use internal filters in his aquariums. I thought I would do an unboxing video on it as well as a brief review. I have had this filter running on my 55 gallon angelfish planted tank now for around 1 month and it's working great!
I bought the 20-40 gallon version of this filter and honestly I was afraid it was too powerful for my angelfish. I later purchased the 10-20 gallon for this tank and will be utilizing the 30-40 gallon version in a another tank for an upcoming project. That video will be published soon!
The filter itself is very easy to instal and is incredibly user friendly. It does not however have a massive amount of capacity for mechanical, biological or chemical media which is a slight downside. However, if you, like me, have a densely planted tank with another form of filtration (In my case the aqua clear 50 HOB) it is perfect! It provides great flower throughout the tank and really helps to clear your aquarium water up!
Let me know your thoughts in the comments & thank you for watching!

You got the filter upside down. The cord part should be on top.
Was wondering of anyone else noticed 😂
Any special reson you put it up side down?
I’ve thought about getting one of these since seeing MD use them. I used to use internal filters all the time, and always quite liked them! Never had one with a spray bar though!
Works very well👍🏻 I wouldn’t run this on as the only filter in the tank due to small bio capacity but for this setup, it works great. Thanks for watching mate
@@cichlidscape for a 20G tank do you think it's necessary for a HOB as well?
@@banksj54 do you have plants too? I think one of these and some plants in the tank would be more than fine. I have this on a 55g tank with a HOB also
@@cichlidscape yeap I have some live plants. I like the bio capacity in the HOB but I think two may be overkill for a 20g
Lol that filter is upside down 😂
Lol thanks Joe! Bit late to the party mate but great eyes😉😂
Thanks for the video ... Looks like this filter is gonna be a Great one nice power strong and if it gets too strong you can adjust it to low. Either way looks like it'll perform great. Once again thanks for the video......
🤔🤦🏻♂️the filter is not in the right direction❌️❌️😎
suction should be down
Guess you could flip it around for sure. Can’t imagine it would really effect its efficiency either way though right? The pump still pulls water through the sponge and other media….no matter how its positioned. Thanks for watching big vig👍🏻
@@cichlidscape mmmhh, you are wrong, the water must turn in a specific direction, but if you want to do anything logical you put the filter anyhow, it's true...
@@WhatOfFox I believe you are right on how the filter should be positioned. However, the pump still pulls water through toward the pump…..through the media no matter how it’s positioned. Same as a sponge filter would whether you put it lateral/horrizontal etc. You can put it lateral in the tank as shown in the instructions (I just checked) so positioning can be switched up. I appreciated your concern for my hobby though big vig. Top lad👌🏻 would love to see your amazing tanks sometime (I’m sure you have them)
@@cichlidscape ✅️😄 i have 26 tanks in this moment, the smallest is 150lt and the biggest is 2300lt, unfortunately I don't have the time or the need to expose my life on RUclips, it's not because we're not on RUclips that we don't have a life , but who knows, maybe one day, thank you for your explanations, it's always good to learn "different" things .. 👍🏻✅️
@@WhatOfFox would love to see them. You don’t have any photos at all? It sure is vig. That’s gotta be the sim everyday I think👍🏻
Does this filter have flow adjustment?
The only thing is that you install it upside down, the water intake must be at the bottom.
I did notice this and have had it changed for a while now👍🏻 filter running pretty good!
Why did you put it on upside down? Shouldn’t the intake be lower?
Why wash the bio media, and then stack them neatly, that's against it's purpose. You then put the bio media before the sponge. 😅 And the whole filter upside down.
wash the bio media because it’s new and when some media is new it’s really dusty. You don’t want that in your tank Sherlock👍🏻 in regard to the filter…yes it was upside down haha had it fixed a while after going back through the manual😂 thanks for watching!
@@cichlidscape you said you took it from your canister filter. You showed it actually. 😅
Sherlock.
@@globalist1990 sure thing bud😂 if the bio media is washed/cleaned with aquarium water it’s still beneficial!👍🏻 just helps to clean anything bad that’s clogged in there. It’s when you do it with water out of the tap it’s a problem
@@cichlidscape just stay in the gym mate
@@globalist1990 what?!😂 get back on your keyboard and bug someone else little warrior
How’s life?, love it- so useful view- :)
Hi.. you only have on this tank esponge filter and this new one on that tank?beatiful tank..congratulation.👏
It has an aquaclear 50 also. Right now I have taken sponge filter out so it’s currently running on the internal filter & the HOB👍🏻
Thanks for the wonderful video. I have been watching your video's sence early 2020. My most favorite tank is the angle tank from the old fish room. I like watvhing your videos you have great content.
Thanks for watching Timothy I appreciate it. & yeah I loved that 125 gallon in wall tank. The angel’s looked awesome in there👌🏻
I’ve recently been considering this purchase for my 29g I currently have an AC50 but as you said the water comes crashing down instead of flowing across the tank. I’m wondering if it would be good enough to use in place of the AC50 because my plant growth looks great everywhere except where the water flows back in from the filter. My guess is they are just getting blasted too much
Could be the case. Can you increase the water level of the tank so the water doesn’t come crashing down quite as much? I would say you could, but you may miss out on some bio media as there isn’t too much space compared to an AC50. Using both together in this 55 really makes sense though I think👍🏻 thanks for watching Nick
I've got a bag full of these type of filters that I've accumulated over the years. I just don't see the advantage of using one over a sponge filter.
If you have tanks over 40 gallons in capacity, you would generally plump for a decent canister filter (which can also take care of any flow that you need), which makes these a bit redundant.
I see what you mean. In terms of bio capacity I definitely get your point but I think price wise & extra flow wise these are a good option. Especially in planted tanks like this one👍🏻 thanks for watching Andreas
Nice aquariums fella 👍🏾, loving the scaping.
Thanks Paul. Appreciate you watching & commenting bud
Hi I'm going to be a new fish mom very soon. I've just been doing my research and watching lots of youtube videos, like yours specifically for this filter bc I believe this filter would be best for my room (as it makes no sound) love that about this filter! Anyways my question for you is, I know that I need to change the filter. Can you do a whole separate video on how you change this filter specifically and how often you should change it? I'll be owning a black moor goldfish btw (: Thank you!
I have the same HOB as you and have the same crashing issue mainly caused by evaporation of water. If i keep the water level high then no crashing, but that's a pain to keep refilling every week. I invested in the Nicrew 380 and LOVE it, so quite. But i am afraid to remove my HOB as it is a beast do you think i need to run both or will be good with just the Nicrew 380
Mayin rugby om 👍👍
👍🏻👍🏻
Does bio media still work if it comes after the sponge? I was told it has to be the first thing the water passes over.
what's the best angle for the spray bar for optimum oxygen and underwater flow/circulation when it's above the water surface ? or should i just submerge it? but i think that defeats the purpose vis-a-vis water agitation. i'm also trying to grow floating plants so i need to keep surface current to an optimal minumum
What I did was just lower my water and have the filter just a little bit on top of the waterline
Well what’s the plastic tube for ?
The plastic tube connected to the filter? This is the outflow👍🏻
@@cichlidscape I got a clear tube but and the arm thing - but nowhere to connect the plastic tube lol I’m rethinking aquatics life
@@audreysuniverse3051 I believe that might be a smaller version of this item. Is there not a pretty good sized instruction manual with the filter?
How do you put the propellor in?
great video
Thanks my friend👍🏻
Great video but why did you put the filter in upside down? The intake should be closer to the bottom and the outflow up top so you get maximum circulation.
User error Gavin….user error haha it’s turned round now👍🏻
