I grew up in the south side of Richmond as a little toddler, then I moved to 80th in laugh land around 3rd and 4th grade. I hated it there but luckily my parents moved to the suburbs in 2016 and it just made a big difference on my life and it was so much better. I really use to hate the city 😭
You gotta hand it to Chicago, I expected far more decaying buildings. Seems like they have bulldozed a significant amount. I just assume every empty lot formerly hosted an abandoned building.
20:53 That "Nicholson Technology Academy" shown at 60th and Peoria is the site of my former elementary school, William G. Beale Elementary School which I attended Kindergarten through 8th Grade, graduating in 1975. The building is essentially the same, with some updates and additions, but during my time there, that building was known as the "new building", which housed the K-5th grade classrooms as well as the only cafeteria on campus. The original school building, located across the schoolyard closer to 61st and Sangamon was an ancient 4 story structure which we referred to as the "old building". It was officially known as the Wm. G. Beale Upper Grade Center", housing grades 6-8. It was in the UGC that we began having homerooms for each class in each grade and going to different classrooms and teachers for various subjects as opposed to spending the entire day in one class with one teacher covering various subjects. The old building was torn down some years after I graduated, and from this, I can assume that the Beale School that I knew is long gone.
Must be a Midwest thing, because Chicago hoods are not like the hoods on the East Coast. You go to NYC, Philly, Newark or Baltimore, and the hoods look like a bomb was dropped.
Chicago made the effort. Spent lots clearing out housing that declined too far to abandonment. The hope is one day... these lots will become a new better neighborhood and the Norther US Northeast and Midwest Rust-belt.... including Applachia. So much loss. Thank God most of Chicago is intact to and vibrant restored areas by gentrification or middle-class that did not decline... That and a very diversified economy and core that maintained more corporate investment along with city improvements. To fall to the level of Detroit city-proper.
Still, not bad by far compared to other city hoods. Just not really any ride off main streets here. White-flight and redlining by our own gov. Effectively preventing low-interst loans like FHA and GI loans to those redlined (basically high minority and or newer immigrant areas). It effectively created our UNDERCLASS by our own actions. Add loss of lower-skilled UNION jobs that once flourished. As they left for suburbs and then... hugely for dirt cheap labor in Asia. Now it is to the sunbelt cities that remained cheaper by less desired... before AC for all and industry.
Is it safe to go to the king von memorial and take a couple of very quick pictures? 😮 I go to Chicago with my husband once a year. I want to do that and I've seen other people's pics but I'm not sure if I should. Especially having an outta state plate (Kentucky) on my car. I am the biggest Von fan, my husband says if he was still alive I'd leave him for Von lol 😂😂 I bought the blue coat from the broke opps video a few years ago lol! Anyway I wanna know I always feel like my trip is incomplete when we leave because of that. Sorry soo long. @fatboydayoungan
@@deltajohnson6604 it’s in O’Block on 64th, but it is not safe especially if u don’t know people and what kind of affiliated gangs will come to that store. I would say NO.
A lot of empty lots of lost housing and businesses. Eventually, if the northern US grows again as once its industrial cities boomed (as none were built as a ghetto poor area) but our own actions lead it it as middle-class White familes.. moved out including loss of businesses and retail.
Most of the parts of Englewood you showed were already black in the 1960’s. You never touched the white Englewood that was totally destroyed by the blacks!
With lots of empty lots in this video just on main streets... clearly, this area had tremendous loss. Just the city in the 90s thru to today... Is pro-active to remove worst blight. Also, Chicago ago IS FAR CLEANER than soooo many other older cities. It also has its utilitarian alleys to keep trash and most ugly power-line poles vs other cities. GIVE IT SOME CREDIT....
Englewood has been cleaned up so much that I hardly recognize it.
Much better than other drive videos of Chicago, great stuff. Love the angles!
lovin' you baby
You're doing good work.
Grew up on 61st and Champlain. Left the city in 2004 and I don't miss it there at all. Man, it looks so different now.

Chicago has some of the best looking ghettos. Love the old buildings.

Nice homes. Clean. Barely any traffic.
That’s true, hardly any traffic in the busiest city in the world. Hmmm…
Just give it a few more years before it shines again.
Man i miss my hood from Halsted to Racine i use to live for that shit 💯

West Englewood. Bad memories. This could be a video of Neptune - Recognize nothing.
Which cámara do you use?
This particular video was filmed with the GoPro11, I use the GoPro12 now.
