With Metronome's release, CMYK officially comes to a close! 🎨 So I'm going to be sappy for a moment haha Throughout my life, I've always seen chapters ending as destructive. Going from one state to another had to be a “burn everything down and start over" type of deal. "Metronome" is reflective of learning that some things will always be constant, no matter what may come, our hearts will keep beating. The time will keep moving, and some things will stick with us. It's a bit bittersweet in that way, but it's comforting. I'm not ending off CMYK to rush to something new... I'm taking it with me forever. (Of course, this is also about a few other things, and kind of fits Miki moving to SynthV next year too!) Which is why Miki felt like the only right vocalist for this song. No matter where I go 5 - 10 years from now, I'll always have Miki there. I'll always have these songs, these memories, and they'll go on and on with me. Thank you to everyone who listened to CMYK 🎨💙 I’m very excited to keep walking this path with you all
When this song came out my dad was in Hospital and everytime i was returning to home from him i played this song. This is one more reason why it is so important to me. Thank you for makeing it even if my dad didn't made it.
Thank you Circus and Rice for having me on!! it's been a delight and honor to work with you guys for the CMYK Project AND YES IM SO HAPPY MISS MIKI AND CIRCUS!!! YOULL ALWAYS BE INCREDIBLE DUO!!!! you've worked so extremely hard, thank you for an absolutely amazing 2023!
This was a pleasure to watch during premiere. The art style changes in the background were cool, but the reveal of all of the different artists at the end gave me chills! Everyone did such an incredible job. This is such an amazing idea for a video, and definitely very inspiring. Well done to everyone involved. This is such a cool project and a wonderful song 💜🥹

Metronome Analysis (+Better Off Worse and Right As Rain) This absolute banger has been stuck in my head since I first listened to it, and I’ve been really interested in exploring its connection to Better Off Worse and Right As Rain, as I think they share many thematic and lyrical parallels that form a complete picture of their meaning. Also, there’s a part of me that feels a bit awkward deconstructing these personal lyrics (“Over-analyze my broken heart” Better Off Worse moment), so just keep in mind this is just my impression of what the lyrics mean and not some authoritative statement. When I say Circus feels a certain way about something, I’m only speculating based on the lyrics, I don’t actually know for sure. Please go listen to Better Off Worse and especially Right As Rain in addition to this song if you haven’t, I really think they complement each other so well. Without further ado, I’ll first go through my interpretation of each of the lyrics along with the accompanying moments in the music video. PART 1: METRONOME LYRICS/MUSIC VIDEO “With the moment I rise It dwells in my head From morning 'til night Like the rattling dead.” The video begins with a shot of Miki’s hand starting a metronome (more on that symbolism later). Importantly, this isn’t the Miki from the rest of the video- her glove is the same as Miki’s official design. She represents Miki the Vocaloid, one of Circus’ favorites and one he’s used for a few songs before. She starts the metronome, representing how she’s part of what started Circus’ career and his love for Vocaloid in general. Next, a different Miki is shown in a walk cycle, showing how Circus’ career has continued to move forward, her different design showing how she’d evolved from when she started and how she specifically represents this song rather than representing the Vocaloid herself, the way many of Circus’ songs have the Vocaloid wear different outfits in his videos. The lyrics here pair with the beginning visuals and start us on a few ideas that will repeat throughout the song. Something that stays stuck in someone’s head is described, a bit like the repetitive sound of a metronome we hear at the beginning. However, at the end here it’s compared to the “rattling dead”, which indicates that it’s referring to something that should be gone, but hasn’t. I think this is about Circus’ old music, the CMYK project in particular, which he continues to think about even after it’s finished. The death metaphors will continue all throughout the song, which represent the end of something but also the start of something new (like the meaning of the death tarot card). There is a mourning process to moving onto a new chapter, but also an excitement for the future. Because people are inspired by a creator's old work, it lives on through their passion. Things must die but they never truly disappear completely. So, Circus got swept up in Vocaloid culture, rose as a popular producer who made many beloved songs, and continues to think about them even long after they’ve been released and the hype has died down. “Void of soul, void of life Without your breath my chest runs cold Holy lights adorn the sky Just as mortality has foretold” Here we get the first second person, which represents a few things: Circus’ audience, Vocaloids in general, and the people who’ve helped him make his music videos. “Without your breath” is leading me towards viewing this as representing the Vocaloid software, whose voice is what Circus uses to create music. So in this first part, as a part of his life ends (CMYK, Vocaloid, etc.) he feels listless. There’s an interesting contrast here where the lyrics “holy lights adorn the sky” are shown falling down on the screen, almost as if they’re falling out of the sky, another nod to the inevitable truth that even popular songs will eventually become less popular and talked about, and how every project like CMYK must end, no matter how celebrated they become. This also ties into the popularity of Circus’ old style of music, and how he just can’t keep making songs exactly like those over and over again even if they’re his most popular and celebrated (“holy”/sacred). “Holy” also evokes the image of something going to heaven after it “dies”, meaning it was something beloved. “Just as mortality has foretold” appears repeated many times in the background, representing the repetition and inevitability of projects ending. So here something has ended (most likely something Vocaloid related, could even be referring to other producers retiring) just as it must end, and because of how admired it was the loss of it leaves the singer empty. “But I don't wanna leave this world Without you holding onto me No I don't wanna let this lonely heart be An isolated beat” These lyrics mark where Miki stops walking forward and faces the camera instead. Besides making it seem like she’s addressing the audience, it also connects to the idea of not wanting to move forward- for the old things to die. This is where the “you” takes on a partial meaning to the very people watching the video, who’ve stuck around through Circus’ music and listened to what he had to say through his music. The “you” can also refer to Vocaloid as well, as it’s what allowed him to communicate his feelings through his songs. So here the lyrics are showing how it’s painful to leave behind good things, and how he doesn’t want to lose Vocaloid/his fans/the joy from his old projects as he moves onto other things. Even though selling his emotional state through his music was painful as seen in Better Off Worse, keeping it inside is also painful. He wants to keep making Vocaloid, to share his creativity and projects with people, and to cling to the joy from all the songs he’s worked on and felt proud of in the past. Don't wanna let you go Like a metronome Don't wanna let you go Like a metronome, and on it drones Here we get the title references in the lyrics. A metronome is a repetitive ticking sound that marks a rhythm (a bit like a heartbeat), symbolizing how the memories and precious moments from making all these Vocaloid songs throughout his career will never truly go away and stop coming in the future. He doesn’t want to stop making music, or to forget about what got him where he is today. “With copper as eyes I wait for your voice Cacophonies I realize as Heaven destroyed” So once again Miki walks forward, and the lyrics further reference things ending. Copper is a conductor for electricity and electricity is often a metaphor for excitement and pairs into electronic music and vocal synths, so I think this first part is about how the singer is looking for the next Vocaloid song/old Vocaloid songs they once loved, since the “voice” is another hint towards this being about Vocaloids. So the singer creates more music through Vocaloid (“cacophonies I realize”), they get talked about and loved, and then they end (heaven destroyed). The repeated mentions of “heaven” are communicating that the things dying here aren’t fully disappearing, they’re being immortalized in the afterlife, which feels reminiscent of how old music doesn’t really go away, it just isn’t fresh anymore. Old periods in someone’s life can still be fondly remembered as if they were in heaven. Of course, heaven is being “destroyed” here, which pairs into some future lyrics about refusing to be dead, not wanting to let the second person go, etc. “Charcoal hearts don the night Without your sight I am astray Through the waves of Charon's tide Together we could withstand doomsday” Charcoal is a residue from heating wood, so “charcoal hearts” are hearts that have had their flame of passion lit and eventually burnt out. This is a call back to “holy lights adorn the sky”, contrasting the beloved songs created from hard work and the worn out hearts of those who poured everything into them. I would lean towards “sight” being more about the fans, so here he’s disappointed that some of the songs he works so hard on don’t get the same recognition as his more popular stuff (a very prominent theme in Better Off Worse). It’s also about how, once a song has been talked about and the hype wears out, the one who created it is left back in obscurity due to the rapid nature of social media and how fast interests wane. So here something started and ended, people aren’t talking about it or looking at it any more, and the singer doesn’t know where to go from there. As for the second half, the Charon mention is because he ferries the souls of the deceased. Another metaphor about death and moving on, maybe even an homage to previous Vocaloid producers who’ve also stopped producing. Even as things “die” and people change, so long as people stick together they can get through it. Though an artist may move onto different projects, even stylistically different ones, there’s still merit to sticking around and seeing the new. Change should be welcomed, not rejected (a parallel to Better Off Worse). The singer wants to hold onto the parts of what they loved about the things that are ending so they can accept it’s passing and move on. In the video Miki is walking forward while facing the camera, showing how the singer wants to move forward while sticking together with the audience (us Circus fans, I would imagine). “'Cause I don't wanna leave this world Without you holding onto me No I don't wanna let this lonely heart be An isolated beat” These lyrics are the same as before, but I want to talk about the video here. Miki is merely a silhouette, showing how the singer feels empty and purposeless without the project they are leaving behind, the fans, and the Vocaloid community as a whole. (continued in the comments)
"Don't wanna let you go Like a metronome Don't wanna let you go Like a metronome, and on it drones" Here in the video we get a sneak peak at the other art from the contributors of previous CMYK artists, which also reference some of the songs they worked on, hinting towards the song’s connection to the end of CMYK and paying homage to all the artists who worked on it and helped make it so special. “On and on it goes Like a metronome, it never slows” So here we just get the backgrounds without Miki, showing that even without being involved in Circus’ work these other artists have all sorts of other projects that keep being made and that can fulfill the ache left behind by the end of CMYK. Not only does the metronome keep going, it keeps at the same pace. There’s so much amazing music and art that gets made in the Vocaloid community, so even if a beloved project ends there’s much to discover that can fill the void. “I dismiss the gates of heaven And the flames of hell Bring me to another option Underneath your spell” The singer doesn’t want things to end. Heaven and Hell are both types of afterlife, neither of which the singer wants. Even if their work is well loved enough to “get into heaven”, that wouldn’t satisfy them. There’s also a rejection here of the polarizing reception art can have. Even if they might doubt whether they can continue- through their art being seen as peak (“heaven”), or through it being ignored or panned (“hell”), they still want to keep creating. They also refuse to view their previous art and their fond memories as over and done with, because it’s always part of them. There’s another “you” here, which I think can refer to the fans who’ll stick around, the vocal synths that keep being made, the Vocaloid community that continues to thrive, or Vocaloid producers who continue to inspire Circus (like in Right As Rain). “Spell” evokes the idea of witches, who go against religious ideas about heaven and hell. Very spitting in the face of the idea of the cycle of life and death. In the video, Miki is still and lying down with her eyes closed, refusing to walk forward as she has been. “I will rise anew Forsake my soul to stay by you By thy hand, a ghoul Let this undying love be true” We start with a call back to the beginning of the song with “rise anew”. Just like how everything started, they’re gonna keep making music to keep the joy they’ve experienced doing so, the vocal synths they love so much, and the community they love being a part of. “Forsake my soul” is a reference to Better Off Worse/Right As Rain, where Circus expressed how he made song after song about his angst and pain, bearing his soul to the world. As much as it can hurt to turn pain into fuel and commodify it for an audience, it can be rewarding to share feelings with others and have them be inspired in turn. So here the singer is going to turn into a “ghoul”, refusing to let their music career end. They also won’t let the negativity get to them, keeping their love for the art they make and have made in the past. The video is the same shot as before with the backgrounds referencing previous CMYK artists’ work coming back, connecting to Circus’ love for the album and him not wanting to forget about it or leave it behind completely. The rest of the lyrics repeat from here, so now I’ll discuss the video. Miki transforms into the different versions by the different CMYK artists, paying homage to their work on the album, and pairing into how Circus loves the songs and music videos from it and wanting those experiences to stay with him as he makes more music. The last shot is of the metronome once again, with another shot of original Miki reaching towards it, a bittersweet ending representing how even though the love may remain ultimately CMYK really is over. PART 2: BETTER OFF WORSE/RIGHT AS RAIN PARALLELS So here I’m going to go over some themes and lyrics that connect each of these songs with Metronome. “From morning till night”/”It’s 4am on a school night”: In Better Off Worse, the singer describes having an unhealthy sleeping schedule, so I think the line here in Metronome is also about how even the songs made through that unhealthy part of Circus’ life are “stuck in [his] head”, meaning he views them with some amount of fondness. “No I don't wanna let this lonely heart be an isolated beat”/“If you were stuck on an island, what would you bring with you to make it through? Now if the world ended in silence, nobody else but you, what would you do?”: In Right As Rain, the singer opens by asking what someone would do if they were stuck in isolation, which I think is them explaining why they decided to make all these songs exploring their pain. This is going to be a strange reference, but I remember watching a video where a guy sticks himself inside an isolation chamber for 3 days, and he talks about how one of the most difficult parts was knowing that no one could hear him talk. He says something along the lines of, “an experience isn’t an experience unless you’re sharing it with someone else”, which speaks to how humans need community to thrive. So both these songs touch on a similar point about how music can connect people and make them feel less lonely, and how it can be painful to keep feelings inside. This also connects to the themes in Right As Rain of inspiring other people through Vocaloid music. The three music videos: Better Off Worse has references to Circus’ past songs, representing how he feels like he can’t move onto new things because of people preferring his old music. Right As Rain has references to Vocaloid producers that Circus likes, referencing the song’s themes of throwing the bouquet to inspire others through his music the way other Vocaloid producers have inspired him. Metronome has art from artists who helped Circus with CMYK, representing his fondness for the album and how he doesn’t want to let go of it. The past, present, and future: Better Off Worse is the ghost of Circus past (how he wrote his old songs because of his bad emotional state and how he feels he can’t change and has to go back to how he was), Metronome is the ghost of Circus present (how much he loved making CMYK and how he wants the present joy he feels creating Vocaloid music to remain forever), and Right As Rain is the ghost of Circus future (those who are inspired by Circus’ music shouldn’t follow exactly in his footsteps by hurting themselves for the algorithm, but they’ll still turn out ok). “No, we must go back” in "Better Off Worse" to “on and on it goes” in "Metronome" to “turn out right as rain” in "Right As Rain”. “To halt my growth and put on a show”/”Who are you putting up this act for?”: In Better Off Worse, the singer tortures themselves for their fans, keeping to the angsty music their fans like. But in Right As Rain, the singer wonders “who” they’re doing it for. Are the fans who don’t care about the artist’s happiness, who demand things be made to their preferences, and who reject change and progress the ones who they want to have around? Are they doing everything for the algorithm and not for themselves anymore? “The mourning of one still alive”/the general death metaphors in Metronome: The singer in Better Off Worse is frustrated because people act like they’re dead, ignoring their new music and endlessly expressing sadness over the old stuff being gone, but it isn’t actually, as Metronome argues. Things may end, but they don’t disappear. People don’t need to mourn Circus’ old music because it still exists and they can go listen to it, which also means they don’t have to hate on his new stuff. Change doesn’t need to hurt so badly because the memories of the old stuff still exist. Treating someone like they’re dead when they’re still creating not just makes them feel worthless but also traps them into never moving forward. “Rejecting change to keep you there”/”Don’t wanna let you go”: Being afraid of moving on because of losing the people who loved who you were and also because of being fond of the old work (BOW features references to his old songs not just because the song is about people focusing on Circus’ old music but also because the old stuff is neat and has merit). Metronome represents both change and constants, the marrying between the themes of BOW of staying the same to keep an audience and Right As Rain’s wanting to pass the torch onto the next generation. The bouquet metaphor represents how music inspires people to create themselves. PART 3: CONCLUSION All of these songs together really do feel like a love letter to the Vocaloid community in some ways. While I think Metronome is interpretable enough to be about any sort of change that someone is having difficulty coping with, when put in context with the other songs it feels both like a homage to Circus’ past songs, how he’s trying to move towards the future, and how he never wants to leave the parts of the songs he loved behind completely. While I think part of Better Off Worse’s popularity is because of how raw and straightforward the lyrics and message are, it is seriously so rewarding to analyze the other songs, too, which even made me appreciate Better Off Worse more. If you don’t want to feel guilty about liking Better Off Worse just write a 3k work analysis of Metronome it’s that easy. Anyway STREAM RIGHT AS RAIN, METRONOME, AND BETTER OFF WORSE!!! YOU’RE ONLY GETTING THE FULL STORY THAT WAY!!!! (Me saying this in the comments of Metronome like it matters to say it here).
@@absentsilhouette6511I LOVE THIS SO MUCH, YOUR ANALYSIS 🤌🤌🤌 what do you think of vermilion as i personally think it might be of the same collection 👀
I'm stunned. When I first heard it on the CMYK album I thought "No way it could be Miki, her English is way to good, probably SynthV Teto" but it's actually her?! How? You're so talented and dedicated, it must be so much work but the result is incredible
There's something unsettling about all the fantastic visuals in the background, and then there's just Miki, looking forward with a flat expression, singing her digital heart out, and yet looking like she's feels like she's just droning on the metronome. It gives this bittersweet feeling, like no matter how amazing each and every one of your songs is, there's always an end to each album, and how much more it must hurt for you to leave them behind given how much of your own heart you put into it. But it's ok, that's how life goes. You've gotten used to the rhythm of the metronome, at least as used to it as you can, and your final message of this chapter is to tell us it's okay to follow its rhythm too. Because even in the final chorus, where Miki's artstyle changes with the beat in the background, she still has that expression. She is still her.
I already fell in love with this song when I heard it on my CMYK physical copy and was pleasantly surprised by it's existence. This MV just makes me love it even more, it's so beautiful and just absolutely amazing. I'm applauding absolutely everyone who worked on this, it's sooooo good.
I don't know what it is about this song, but it feels reminiscent of your older works, yet simultaneously sounds like a pop song that I'd hear on the radio... I love it so much!
Aaa can't believe I missed this somehow. I discovered it on spotify a few days ago. It's funny to see Miki have an actual song after "Wants a song" was made. It's a bop too
Miki is my absolute favorite Vocaloid, the reason I got so interested in it (in fact, it was iNSaNiTY that got me so into Vocaloid in the first place) and I’m always so happy seeing you use her again. She’s the first voicebank I plan to get when I am able to. Her voice is just so unique and I love it so much. And this song is so good and I’ll be listening to it all week, I can tell! And omg the art! I GASPED seeing all the different art styles. Miki looks so cute in every one of them. I love this so much. Everyone did such a great job!
I've heard some of your songs 10 years ago when I was a early teen. Now, being an adult and revisiting your newer music, it still feels nostalgic even though I haven't heard them before.
IT'S MY GIRL MIKI! SHE'S BACK! Her English is so good here too, oh my god! You could send me this and say she got an English release, and I'd probably believe you! The instrumental too, this is all so choice.
I love this song!!! The instrumentals are phenomenal at the beat drop. Miki's voice is so chill. It doesn't get annoying. Also the animation during the drop is so perfect.
YEAHHHHH METRONOME PREMIERE!!!! THIS HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE SURPRISE SINCE DOWNLOADING THE CMYK PHYSICAL ALBUM, EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO LOOP IT OUTSIDE OF MEDIA PLAYER
ive had this repeating on spotify since the moment i first listened to it,, seriously it’s so good 😭🫶 the bridge into the chorus and the chorus itself are my favorite parts
listened to sf-a2 miki wants a new song the other day, in the wake of her synthv news. this coming out a few days after, and as im finding out its not even a demo, is so like...serendipitous? it's such a lovely song. miki did finally get her new song, and there'll be more from here🥺🥺🥺
The MV looping is such a cute little detail! I couldn't help but put it on repeat not only due to it being a beautiful song, but also due to it deeply resonating, and immediately noticed as soon as it happened.
early ! i honestly loved the whole CMYK album and im sad its closing, but its the end of an amazing era and i appreciate Circus-P and all the artists' contributions to the album.
Circus, thank you very much for a "Goodbye". It was the song i needed back then. Im very thanksful to you. Im still crying over song and those memories.
HEY CONGRATS ON CMYK this is a REALLY good message to send off a chapter of your life in - and I can HEAR how you're getting better, and WORKING towards a better future. It sounds amazing dude :D ALSO THE VIDEO IS GODLY - man rice is so good at this
WOW that AI combination for English really blew my mind. I can’t figure out if it’s like SynthV Teto mashing or what but it’s amazing!! It’s so catchy; beautiful lyrics! And the amount of careful thought into this is downright admirable, all the people who helped make art- that’s what you call teamwork!! That’s what I like to see in this community because it needs more of it, we are here to share experiences together. Thank you again Circus, as a heavy Miki user, this brought tears to my eyes!!
What better to celebrate a closing and new beginnings with you and miki--absolutely wonderful work, Circus!!! 😭💖 Love everyone's beautiful illustrations and assets as well--it's such a fun and sweet way to show off one of THE best girls ever. Cheers to another creative work!! 🥂
I’ve love CMYK and seeing this new era of circusp here. With songs in varying styles and colorful personalities. It’s been really refreshing. Thank you for this album!
Listening to this while reading that there will be a SynthV release of Miki just nakes me so happy. Always loved your songs and Miki especially had a special place in my heart since the very beginning.
OMG THIS IS GORGEOUSSSSSS i've been listening to your songs since I was a little kid and it makes me soo happy to see how far you've come thank you for being a very big inspiration to me through many years! (can't wait to hear your teto song btw!!!)
I really appreciate this song! Me and my fiance have really fallen in love with it, and I'm now making a cover of it in openutau for Valentines day for him with Aiko! It's made me learn everything from making USTs, phonemes, tuning, to mixing and mastering vocals to fit instramentals and makes me want to persue music production as a hobby on top of my career as an artist. I've always loved music, and this song has just made me love it even more. My friend is helping me create a music video with Aiko and everything, it feels like a proper fan project and has been amazing every step of the way! I've been a fan of yours for years now, and never thought a song of yours would be what motivated me to properly get into music, despite always wanting to.
NEW MIKI SONG??? Heck yeah! Excited to hear it! (And happy birthday to Miki! I didn’t know she was set to get a SynthV voicebank next year? Good for her!)
What's there to even say? The writing, composition, artwork and aesthetic are all beautiful!! Even if it won't get as much traction as others this is amazing!
Amaaazing work you guys!! I've always loved the way that Circus tunes English, and I really love the different graphic effects of the video as well as the inclusion of the different artists' Miki at the end! Such an uplifting song :)
I finally got this recommended to me, and it's so cute. I keep repeating it over and over and THE ENDING WITH ALL THE DIFFERENT ART STYLES IS SO CUTE OH the more I listen to this, the more it digs into my conscious. Beautiful as always!
Im a bit late, but i want to say congratulations for CMYK, and for continuing to make such great songs. You're definitely one of my favourite producers, so i just want to say thanks. Thanks for making such cool music! And this song is so cool, and the music video is great too! The part that had so many different art styles was so cool. This song almost made me cry for some reason. Thanks for the music!
I love Miki songs in particular, and I always wondered how well she could be tuned to English. This song is like, masterfully crafted in its sound, and the way she is tuned. Extremely underrated song from Circus !! 10/10
Had to work late but couldn't miss the premier, and man, was it worth it. Absolutely gorgeous video, and the song is so catchy, I could listen to it for days.
A NEW CIRCUS SONG WITH MIKI.... I NEVER THOUGHT ID SEE THE DAY... HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE...... SO BEJTIFHFJL...... AN INCREDIBLE WORK OF ART THANK YOU FOR CMYK......
This song is so good. Every time you release a Miki song, you make me so happy I could cry. I think you should be the embassador for SV-AI Miki and I’m totally expecting them to contact you to make a promotional song. And finally, this is just a wish I’m putting out loud, I’d love an album revamping or remastering your Miki songs. Omg, just the thought of if, makes me so emotional. You and Miki are top tier. ❤️
hearing this at the end of cmyk was such a lovely surprise and now seeing the full experience in the mv is BREATHTAKING!!!! and is that khee and socky's art i see? ❤️❤️
Saw a new Circus song and just had to check it out. As always, you blew me away. Every single song of yours I’ve heard for like the last decade, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and adored, and this is no exception. I look forward to seeing what else you’ll create in the future, but for now I’ll just appreciate everything you’ve already made.
CMYK has slowly but surely become my favourite body of work in the VOCALOID/SynthV space, Circus is an absolute master of his craft, absolutely obsessed
The visuals are absolutely amazing. I listened to this song twice now and both times I had to pause what I was doing to watch it because it's so awesome.
This was such a banger and the music video literally gave me chills!! It was so fun rn but I just know when graduation rolls around I'm going to end up bawling my eyes out at random to this (hahaha I'm not ready to be an adult lol)
I love that I need to not only listen, but watch every new video of yours recently, and be absolutely mesmerized by the perfect match of the beat and visuals. Thanks for blessing us with this experience, Circus, Rice and everyone else who worked on this!!
With Metronome's release, CMYK officially comes to a close! 🎨 So I'm going to be sappy for a moment haha
Throughout my life, I've always seen chapters ending as destructive.
(Of course, this is also about a few other things, and kind of fits Miki moving to SynthV next year too!)
Which is why Miki felt like the only right vocalist for this song. No matter where I go 5 - 10 years from now, I'll always have Miki there.
I'll always have these songs, these memories, and they'll go on and on with me.
Thank you to everyone who listened to CMYK 🎨💙 I’m very excited to keep walking this path with you all
Ok
i love the meaning of this its actually so impactful.
THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES CIRCUS
CMYK was an amazing ride start to finish, thank you so much for your work!! youre an absolute legend
this is all absolutely beautiful, and so is everything else you have made. we love you circus!
I'm SO glad that CMYK ends with Metronome and not Better Off Worse
yeah that would've been a sad note to leave it on
checked out Better Off Worse. Yeah. I'm glad too.
happy birthday miki girl
IM SO EXCITED THANK YOU RICE AND CIRCUS FOR INVENTING THE ABILITY TO COUNT MUSICAL BEATS.....
When this song came out my dad was in Hospital and everytime i was returning to home from him i played this song. This is one more reason why it is so important to me. Thank you for makeing it even if my dad didn't made it.
Sorry for your loss.
I love it when you use miki! iNSaNiTY was a cultural reset for her as a vocaloid, and for the community, im so exciteddddd
This dude's ability to make Japanese vocaloids sing in English
Another banger
3:12 In my time as an animator, seeing in a single video several types of drawing styles is something of the most beautiful thing for my eyes. 💫💖//,//💖💫

Metronome Analysis (+Better Off Worse and Right As Rain)
This absolute banger has been stuck in my head since I first listened to it, and I’ve been really interested in exploring its connection to Better Off Worse and Right As Rain, as I think they share many thematic and lyrical parallels that form a complete picture of their meaning.
PART 1: METRONOME LYRICS/MUSIC VIDEO
“With the moment I rise
It dwells in my head
From morning 'til night
Like the rattling dead.”
The video begins with a shot of Miki’s hand starting a metronome (more on that symbolism later).
“Void of soul, void of life
Without your breath my chest runs cold
Holy lights adorn the sky
Just as mortality has foretold”
Here we get the first second person, which represents a few things: Circus’ audience, Vocaloids in general, and the people who’ve helped him make his music videos.
“But I don't wanna leave this world
Without you holding onto me
No I don't wanna let this lonely heart be
An isolated beat”
These lyrics mark where Miki stops walking forward and faces the camera instead.
Don't wanna let you go
Like a metronome
Don't wanna let you go
Like a metronome, and on it drones
Here we get the title references in the lyrics.
“With copper as eyes
I wait for your voice
Cacophonies I realize as
Heaven destroyed”
So once again Miki walks forward, and the lyrics further reference things ending.
“Charcoal hearts don the night
Without your sight I am astray
Through the waves of Charon's tide
Together we could withstand doomsday”
Charcoal is a residue from heating wood, so “charcoal hearts” are hearts that have had their flame of passion lit and eventually burnt out.
“'Cause I don't wanna leave this world
Without you holding onto me
No I don't wanna let this lonely heart be
An isolated beat”
These lyrics are the same as before, but I want to talk about the video here. Miki is merely a silhouette, showing how the singer feels empty and purposeless without the project they are leaving behind, the fans, and the Vocaloid community as a whole. (continued in the comments)
"Don't wanna let you go
Like a metronome
Don't wanna let you go
Like a metronome, and on it drones"
Here in the video we get a sneak peak at the other art from the contributors of previous CMYK artists, which also reference some of the songs they worked on, hinting towards the song’s connection to the end of CMYK and paying homage to all the artists who worked on it and helped make it so special.
“On and on it goes
Like a metronome, it never slows”
So here we just get the backgrounds without Miki, showing that even without being involved in Circus’ work these other artists have all sorts of other projects that keep being made and that can fulfill the ache left behind by the end of CMYK. Not only does the metronome keep going, it keeps at the same pace. There’s so much amazing music and art that gets made in the Vocaloid community, so even if a beloved project ends there’s much to discover that can fill the void.
“I dismiss the gates of heaven
And the flames of hell
Bring me to another option
Underneath your spell”
The singer doesn’t want things to end.
“I will rise anew
Forsake my soul to stay by you
By thy hand, a ghoul
Let this undying love be true”
We start with a call back to the beginning of the song with “rise anew”.
PART 2: BETTER OFF WORSE/RIGHT AS RAIN PARALLELS
So here I’m going to go over some themes and lyrics that connect each of these songs with Metronome.
PART 3: CONCLUSION
All of these songs together really do feel like a love letter to the Vocaloid community in some ways.
@@absentsilhouette6511I LOVE THIS SO MUCH, YOUR ANALYSIS 🤌🤌🤌
what do you think of vermilion as i personally think it might be of the same collection 👀
Circus's Miki is back!
And this song is about past mistakes learning to build yourself again
I already fell in love with this song when I heard it on my CMYK physical copy and was pleasantly surprised by it's existence. This MV just makes me love it even more, it's so beautiful and just absolutely amazing. I'm applauding absolutely everyone who worked on this, it's sooooo good.
I don't know what it is about this song, but it feels reminiscent of your older works, yet simultaneously sounds like a pop song that I'd hear on the radio... I love it so much!
I went wild when I first heard metronome on the CMYK physical. So happy to see an MV for it
Happy anniversary to SF-A2 Miki!!
I am happy that she is gonna receive an Synthesizer V studio voicebank along with Kiyoteru!!
How do I find you everywhere!? 😵💫
The way you made the metronome into the sound of footsteps is a really nice touch.
No there’s an added beat. I can still hear the metronome
IT'S MY GIRL MIKI! SHE'S BACK! Her English is so good here too, oh my god! You could send me this and say she got an English release, and I'd probably believe you! The instrumental too, this is all so choice.
Thank you for making my childhood.
this song is so catchy, been listening to it every day and its just getting better
SHE CAME BACK
Любимая Мики, сто лет не слышала новых треков. Такое солнышко, с ней столько теплых воспоминаний...
Aaah, congrats to all the artists! They did an amazing job! Seeing Miki in all different styles is so adorable! Happy Birthday Miki ❤❤
ive had this repeating on spotify since the moment i first listened to it,, seriously it’s so good 😭🫶 the bridge into the chorus and the chorus itself are my favorite parts
Turns out Miki finally got her wish (flash back to SF--A2 Miki wants a new song)
listened to sf-a2 miki wants a new song the other day, in the wake of her synthv news. this coming out a few days after, and as im finding out its not even a demo, is so like...serendipitous? it's such a lovely song. miki did finally get her new song, and there'll be more from here🥺🥺🥺
The MV looping is such a cute little detail!
Yessss it's getting a video!!!🎉🎉 I immediately recognized her voice on the album~
So happy for the return of the Miki Master!
Circus, thank you very much for a "Goodbye". It was the song i needed back then. Im very thanksful to you. Im still crying over song and those memories.
This song is so addictive in a good way
LETS GOOOO my new favorite of yours 😭
this is one of your best songs no joke
HEY CONGRATS ON CMYK
this is a REALLY good message to send off a chapter of your life in - and I can HEAR how you're getting better, and WORKING towards a better future. It sounds amazing dude :D
ALSO THE VIDEO IS GODLY - man rice is so good at this
THIS IS SUCH A GOOD SONG. The whole thing where Miki changed into different art styles... man
WOW that AI combination for English really blew my mind.
Thank you again Circus, as a heavy Miki user, this brought tears to my eyes!!
i love the beat of the song, it's a easily headbanger
What better to celebrate a closing and new beginnings with you and miki--absolutely wonderful work, Circus!!! 😭💖
Love everyone's beautiful illustrations and assets as well--it's such a fun and sweet way to show off one of THE best girls ever. Cheers to another creative work!!

Ooow such a gorgeous song🥰 as well as all your latest music
Can never get enough of this one. Phenomenal song
Aaaaa finally seeing an original that Miki deserves. ❤ Circus always shows the love for these synths in any song he makes!
An amazing song to end this era off with, here’s to the next chapter!! ❤🎉
Amaaazing work you guys!! I've always loved the way that Circus tunes English, and I really love the different graphic effects of the video as well as the inclusion of the different artists' Miki at the end! Such an uplifting song :)
THIS HITS SO HARD OMG
The song and MV are beautiful!!
GOD, WHAT IS THIS? A TRUTHLY MASTERPIECE
A NEW CIRCUS SONG WITH MIKI.... I NEVER THOUGHT ID SEE THE DAY... HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE...... SO BEJTIFHFJL...... AN INCREDIBLE WORK OF ART THANK YOU FOR CMYK......
You still have the touch. You really inspired me to try producing and sharing my own Vocaloid songs, Thanks
This song jumpscared me in cymk physical LMAO I'm so excited for the PV!!
This is such a beautiful song! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, MIKI!!! YOU'RE MY FAVORITE VOCALOID!!!

So very proud of u circ 💕
MIKI MY BELOVED... I love the video editing style on this one and Miki's animation is super smooth! Lovely song 🥺
This song has made me realize that Circus is the only producer I know who uses Miki for actual songs.
Idk how you do it, but you are a master at making Japanese voice banks sing in english
I love that I need to not only listen, but watch every new video of yours recently, and be absolutely mesmerized by the perfect match of the beat and visuals. Thanks for blessing us with this experience, Circus, Rice and everyone else who worked on this!!
i've already said this in the premiere but i really do love the choruses in circus' songs. i'm instantly replaying for more
