    Today we’re testing out a 90 degree bevel on a low angle hand plane blade. This thing is a beast at tough grain. I’ve never been able to plane zebrawood successfully and this thing did an incredible job getting a finish ready surface. Please subscribe, comment and like. Thanks for watching!

    I use and like handscrapers and scraperplanes very much in finishing difficult woods and shapes of furniture
    where a normal plane can"t perform.
    In my Lie-Nielsen 164 low angle smoother plane the 90 degree bevel blade works amazingly.
    It turns this even so perfect smoother in a quality scraper as well.

      I did a video on the 90 degree blade. So awesome!

  • @dpeteual
    @dpeteual 3 года назад +2

    I initially ground the blade to 90 degrees. It would not cut. I found that this was not a steep enough angle to present to the wood (102 degrees). I normally hold my card scrapper at about 112 degrees. I ground the front of the blade at 10 degrees to get 112 degrees presentation angle. This worked perfectly.

    • @ashgiles1343
      @ashgiles1343 2 года назад

      That was my thought. How do you hobe a 90 degree blade easily? I might hone my spare blade to something like 70 degrees so i have an 83 degree cutting angle. Any suggestions on this. I imagine 83 degrees would cut difficult grain well.

  • @Farmboy1544
    @Farmboy1544 5 лет назад +1

    I found nothing takes old paint off old wood faster than a very sharp 90° scrapper. I made it out of a (1/4", 2 x 5) steel coupon. It lifts paint without gouging the wood surface. Ever since I've been a big fan of that 90° angle. Try it you'll like it.

    Thanks for your videos. I know this is an old post, but maybe you still monitor the activity. The 90 degree blade looks like a very promising solution to wild grain, but I don't think an experienced woodworker would even attempt zebrawood with a plane using a 37 degree cutting angle (12 degree bed angle + 25 degree sharpening angle) A better (more useful?) comparison would have been with a 50 degree set-up. (12 degree bed angle + 38 degree sharpening angle )

    Very interesting! I'd be interested to see the scraper iron vs a high angle frog in a no. 4. The low angle jack with a 25 degree bevel would already be at a disadvantage in highly figured woods, amiright?

      I think anyone who can plane zebra wood is my hero hahaha. I've literally never done it without tear out but I'm probably not a genius at setting up a hand plane. You could regrind any ordinary blade and it would save you money on a scraper plane . Although scraper planes are better because they are considerably wider than ordinary planes .Plus you can bow the blade on a "proper" scraper plane and finally of course they are MUCH faster due to the fact the blades are not 2" wide but 3". RIGHT TOOL FOR THR RIGHT JOB

    Zebra wood remined me the olive tree wood. I have never seen any one using olive tree to make stuff on yt. But its very common in turkey. So here's the question; is there a special reason for american woodworkers don't use olive tree?

    • @abydosianchulac2
      @abydosianchulac2 2 года назад

      A late reply, but the answer would be the opposite for your situation: there are very few places olive trees can grow in the US. Olive wood is certainly available, but most of it must be imported leading to much higher prices compared with local hardwoods.

      Depends what wood you are working on. If you are working on wood with consistent grain a Stanley-Bailey pattern n 4 or 5 will work. If you are working highly figured wood then the 62 is the one you should get. The Bailey pattern can be set up to work with wild grain but required more know how.

    Anyone tried that with normal plane by turning the bevel up like in a low angle plain and maybe using ~60 degree sharpening angle.

    • @stefaneriksson9634
      @stefaneriksson9634 6 лет назад

      At a 90+ degreas attack angle the blade is no longer cutting the wood fibres but instead pushing and crushing them and that would put a great stress on the edge. My unqualified guess is that you run a high risk of bending the edge due to the limited support behind it on a normal plane with a steeper frog angle. But I haven't tried it, I'm only speculating.

    • @katzmosestools
      @katzmosestools  6 лет назад

      Stefan Eriksson agree. You'd probably just roll the edge over immediately

    • @mickleblade
      @mickleblade 6 лет назад

      did you really mean 60° sharpening angle? or 60° contact angle? i.e taking the bed into account. Having different blades with different sharpening angles is pretty standard with a low angle jack and it should work with figured wood.

    • @jukkahuuskonen
      @jukkahuuskonen 6 лет назад

      Yes, I meant 60 degree sharpening angle. Combine that with regular plane 45 degree frog and you'll get 105 degree contact angle with wood. Would be quite close to the one in the vid.
      Of course blade is thinner, edge is sharper and forces against the blade are more perpendicular than on the one in the vid, so breaking the blade is a real possibility.

  • @RafaelHe
