Lyrics:
Strange face, with your eyes
So pale and sincere
Underneath you know well
You have nothing to fear
For the dreams that came to you when so young
They told of a life
Where spring is sprung
So forget this cruel world
Where I belong
I'll just sit and wait
And sing my song
But while the earth sinks to its grave
You sail to the sky
On the crest of a wave
(Song published by Blue Raincoat Music)

As a Nick Drake fan of over 30 years standing, I have to say that this is everything a cover version should aim to be.... wonderful.
Spot on mate
You are so right. It made me werp
Weep
yes, except maybe that there's no cello, they gave the cello part to a chorus. Sounds good, BUT IT'S NOT A CELLO!
Absolutely ❤ they have nailed it. Let’s face it, any cover of Nick Drake has got to be powerfully approached and it’s make or break. Most try their best but it’s like taking on a Simon & Garfunkel song…tough! 💕✌️💕
I don't always listen to Fontaines D.C. but when I do so do my neighbors.
This is possibly the greatest cover version I've ever heard - it's deeply affecting, drawing out the beauty of the original song while highlighting what a brilliant band Fontaines D.C. are. Drake's words sung in Grian Chatten's uncharacteristically softened Skerries accent sound magical.
some things should be left well alone and this is definitely one of them!
I agree with you Chris. This cover just keeps pulling me in over and over again, it's a journey, magical. So good. Thank you Nick Drake and thank you Fontaine D.C
Yeah, video is great too. Love it
Listen to the Fontaines cover of gouge away by the pixies , unreal
Decent cover but it’s obviously not the greatest cover you’ve ever heard. Some of your favourite songs are more than likely cover songs. So reactionary
Fontaines covering Nick Drake has to be the best thing I’ve heard in ages. Fantastic cover!
When one of the loudest yet so lyrical talented bands cover one of the most quiet yet so lyrical talented artists the outcome just has to be mind blowing. Fontaines D.C. never disappoint, no matter what they release it's always insanely great.
So many cover versions offer little more than a lazy retread of the original, but not this one. Fontaines D.C. have worked as hard with this wonderful song as they would have done with an original song of their own. This is the stuff of true greatness and I refer you to the words of Chris Jones just below.
Fontaines DC are the best band to come out of Ireland since U2. There strength is in their musical talent, simplicity, superb rhythm section, Conor C and Carlos and a super front man who captivates the audience. 5 poets makes a help in writing those superb lyrics. Can't wait for the new album!!
Far better than U2 imo.
that's coz you've never heard of JJ72
So you never heard My Bloody Valentine
@@andrewmccutcheon4650U2 get some stick because bonos a bit of a eejit but they have some great tunes
@@andrewmccutcheon4650 By this time in their career U2 had made: Boy, October, War and The Unforgettable Fire.
Wait until 2063 to compare both bands…
I just discovered nick drakes second album yesterday.
I listened to it start to finish, I have no words to describe why Nick Drake has struck a chord with me. I admire him so much now
.
I am so glad a new generation of people is going to discover Nick because of this new tribute/cover album.
I also appreciate Fontaines DC for taking on another cover from an influential artist, as they just appeared on the Velvet Underground tribute/cover album not too long ago.
Wonderful cover. Nick drake never got the recognition he deserved. Glad a new generation is getting introduced to him
It makes me so happy to see Nick Drake's music ve adopted and interpreted on such a large scale by so many talented artists.
Absolutely superb version. When the drums and bass kick in again at 2:42 is just awesome…
I love Nick Drake, I love Fontaines D.C. This is wonderful.
Here's some new music and a tribute album to look forward to!
Fucking awesome rendition, I love nick drake, but you took it to another level nice one and thank you for keeping him alive
Wow! This is stunningly beautiful! You’d have to think that Nick would be happy with this version of his song.
I love this band. I don’t know what it is about them but I just really connect with them on an emotional level. Just feels like a really pure, no bullshit band. Not contrived at all or influenced by anyone.
Yes. Sort of familie feel.
This is really Gorgeous. I don't normally use gorgeous to describe music but the amount of layers in the song you hear with headphones is just really incredible.
Ultimate tunnnnne
Let the law be laid down! This is how to let him hear his songs played!!!!!
❤😁👍🎶
Nick Drake ♡ Fontaines
This is so amazing, words fail me, what this band are capable of, what a sound they are!
Instantly an all-time great cover. Adds to my appreciation of the song and the band.
Love the accent
What an insanely brilliant cover. Very few artists can truly make another's piece their own, while still paying huge respect to the original. Mike Scott of The Waterboys reinterpreting Van Morrison and Patti Smith spring to mind. Just brilliant. Thank you for keeping Nick alive. ❤
Amazing.
The instrumentals, sound, and rhythm of this, are just something else. Keep coming back.
Just an amazing cover
Unbelievable cover …hauntingly beautiful
Fontaines D.C. covers Nick Drake song, never expected before and it's amazing.
Not normally a fan of cover versions, and especially not of Nick Drake - but this is great! It retains the essence of the original but brings a new impetus & energy without overpowering. V reminiscent of James Yorkston too, a hugely-underrated artiste.
I really never imagined I'd live in a world where Fontaines D.C covered Nick Drake lol. Rad. Can't wait to hear what David Gray's done! Been waiting about 20 or so years for that moment.
Lovely interpretation. This compilation album is a brilliant way to introduce many others to the music of Nick Drake, as well as a gesture of love.
Giving Moody Blues vibes, love it!
I got in a Taxi once. The driver didn't look like a talker. He said he liked the way people sang with accents. Asked if I'd heard of Fontaine DC. He looked at me in the rear view mirror with eyes as sexy as this song. I spent the next few weeks listening to F.DC.
I love it...last chance Texaco!!!
Those guitar lyrics make me feel like our ancient ancestors found enlightenment. Also makes me believe I have a life in countryside heaven.
Wow!
I hear this on 88.5 WXPN in Philadelphia all the time
Awesome job lads, well done! 👍
I quite like this upbeat version of my favourite Nick Drake song. I hope the album introduces the genius of Nick Drake to a wider audience. RIP Nick Drake.
Heard this 5am in the stone roses bar leeds.... the dj had to play it 3 times in a row or would of been killed by the crowd....INSTANTLY INFECTIOUS MUSICAL ART!
Wow.
These boys never disappoint me
One of my favourite Nick Drake songs, I love this reimagining of the song and the video is awesome!
Non era impresa facile cimentarsi con un capolavoro del genere, ma devo dire che i Fontaines hanno fatto un buon lavoro. Anche il cantato di Grian rende merito alla struggente bellezza poetica di Drake.
LYRICS
Strange face, with your eyes
So pale and sincere
Underneath you know well
You have nothing to fear
For the dreams that came to you when so young
Told of a life
Where spring is sprung
You would seem so frail
In the cold of the night
When the armies of emotion
Go out to fight
But while the earth sinks to its grave
You sail to the sky
On the crest of a wave
So forget this cruel world
Where I belong
I'll just sit and wait
And sing my song
And if one day you should see me in the crowd
Lend a hand and lift me
To your place in the cloud
Last 2 lines are not in this version..
So glad DC FONTAINES joined in on this tribute. Extremely well sung and a very orignial look at the song; is there any further proof needed that Drake was a songwriter on par with the other sixties gods ?(I do not want to mention any names. Do I Bob ?) And what a great band DC F are ! If they can produce another couple of classic albums they will be on par with the truly greats.(Doors, Velvets, Beatles, Byrds, Stones, Smiths, Triffids, Go Betweens, Kinks, Who etc...etc.....
Wow. I always thought of Nick Drake as untouchable. Until now.
AWESOME cover
I just love this what an atmoshpehere
Lovely, guys. I wasn't sure how you'd pull it off, but you did!
An amazing tribute.
No doubt about it! This is a BRILLIANT cover of an already hall of fame song, r.i.p. nick d.
Love to hear Fontaines stretch out & make Drakes song a banger, particularly love the sound of the Eastern sounding strings at about the 4 minute mark, wonderful
Simply wonderfull !! the best cover I ever heard of Nick Drake !
I like this
Nothing I love more than when a band implements their own sound when covering a song… and it pays off!
As a lover of all things nick drake to cover one of his tracks and do it justice takes something special , this is something special.
Amazing version lads thank you 🙏
Yes! fkn yes, yes indeed! ❤
I am long-acquainted with Nick Drake's work. This is a wonderful version of the song, Cello Song.
Brilliant ❤
Love this! Always a risk of disappointment hearing covers of songs you love, but this was anything but that.
Can’t get over this. Brilliant
Big !
❤️
Fontaine's DC never disappoint
GOATS recognize GOAT
Just outstanding cover❤❤❤ it when I first heard it on the radio it just grabbed me, then I realised why it's derived from the master songwriter, so refreshing love that string sound presumably cello? 😄

Sublime. Just beautiful.💕

New FDC ~~~&~~~ it’s a Nick Drake cover??? Swoon!!!✨♥️✨
Wow simply wow!!
Wow! Nick was underappreciated for his whole career. That Volks..... ad came out with Pink Moon, but his catalogue languished. This project is incredibly exciting!
Creative and worthy of the original!
A damn fine cover.
Excellent cover!!!
Very much looking forward to this tribute album & his version of Bob Dylan song!
knocked it outta the park,
boyos
Marvellous ✌️
Five days ago I thought remake excellence was Rick Astley and Blossoms doing The Smiths over on the BBC Music channel. This is even better.
AMAZING
