Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnamese: Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh/City of Ho Chi Minh; [tʰàjŋ̟ fǒ hò cǐ mīŋ̟] (ⓘ) or [tʰàn fǒ hò cǐ mɨ̄n]), formerly known as Saigon (Sài Gòn/柴棒), is a central municipality in Vietnam and the largest city in Vietnam. It is located in the southeast of Vietnam and is the economic, trade, transportation and cultural center of Vietnam. Its GDP ranks first in Vietnam[3] and accounts for about a quarter of Vietnam's GDP[4]. The city's current name is to commemorate Ho Chi Minh, the founding leader of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, Chairman of the Workers' Party of Vietnam and President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
The area where Ho Chi Minh City is located was long a territory of Champa and Khmer. At the end of the 17th century, the Nguyen Lords of Vietnam expanded their territory to the south and established Gia Dinh Prefecture here, which was incorporated into the rule of the Vietnamese court. It grew into an important town in the south and became the base for the restoration of the country by the Nguyen Lord Nguyen Phuc Anh in the 18th century. In 1887, the French army captured Gia Dinh City, established a colonial administration there, and officially named it "Saigon". From 1887 to 1902, Saigon was the capital of French Indochina and was known as the "Pearl of the Far East" and the "Paris of the Far East"[5][6]. In 1954, the two Vietnams separated and Saigon became the capital of South Vietnam. On April 30, 1975, the Vietnamese People's Army captured Saigon and renamed it Ho Chi Minh City the following year. Since the 1990s, Ho Chi Minh City has developed rapidly and has become the center of Vietnam's reform and opening up. It is known as Vietnam's manufacturing center and commercial center[7].
Ho Chi Minh City is now one of the busiest international transit centers. Nearly half of Vietnam's inbound travelers land at Tan Son Nhat International Airport[8], and Saigon Port is also one of the major ports in Southeast Asia[9]. The Globalization and World Cities Research Network designated Ho Chi Minh City as an "Alpha-" global city in 2022[10].
