    In this video I'm going to show you how to flash the HM-10 firmware on to CC2541 Chips by Texas Instruments. That is especially useful if you own a fake module named cc41-a. Since both modules have the same board design you can simple use the firmware of the genuine HM-10 modules. The only difference between the two of them is that the cc41-a misses one oscillator but that doesn’t lead to any problems. Therefore you can use all tutorials that are based on the HM-10 module (there are none for the cc41-a).

    There's warnings in bold on step 2 of the forum post saying that the CC2541 digital pin is not 5v tolerant, yet in your video you wired 5v arduino pins directly to the CC2541 without a level shifter. Aren't people gambling on destroying their modules doing that?

    • @developandplay
      @developandplay  6 лет назад +3

      I do understand where your concern is coming from. The CC2541 module that I'm using is soldered onto a breakout board which handles the downstepping of the voltage. So there is no risk of breaking the module by overvoltage.
      In fact most of these modules are soldered onto a breakout board so that you can hook up wires to it or use it on a breadboard. As far as I know all of those breakout boards do include a voltage regulator. Modules without the breakout board do look a little different from the one shown in this video.

    • @peterlin1332
      @peterlin1332 6 лет назад +4

      The breakout boards with the 3.3v regulator let you power the module off 5v of course, but that's not what the issue is. You solder pins 7, 8 and 11, which are 3.3v pins and they go to D4, D5, D6 on the arduino, which are 5v pins.

    • @developandplay
      @developandplay  6 лет назад +2

      Well you are actually right about that... I've always thought that the the main concern was the vcc pin.
      I myself didn't put anymore research into the chip itself after seeing that it worked for me and a lot of other people. I'll have another look at the datasheet to confirm the warning on the forum thread.

    • @developandplay
      @developandplay  6 лет назад +8

      After having a look at the datasheet I can confirm what you just told me...
      The maximum operating voltage of 3.9V of any of the i/o pins is quite different from the 5V that the arduino should output according to the arduino spec sheet...
      Well I hope that this short time overvoltage did not destroy any modules in the past. I will definitly add a warning or even upload a corrected version of this video in the future. Thanks for the hint.

      @@developandplay don't worry, I can understand your feeling, but I think you have no responsibility because people should THINK before simply repeating the actions done by others, not simply "copy-and-paste". Anyway, in my experience with this circuit as well as with other ones, usually as a quick & dirty solution, by placing current limiting resistors between a 5V output and a 3.3V input, allows to avoid destroying the circuit. Giving the fact that the voltage variation is 5-3.3 = 1.7V, by placing a resistor of 2kOhm, the current will be limited to max 1mA, which is acceptable in most cases.

      That's only the case if the flashing process wasn't successfull. But don't panic it can be repeated as often as you want to.
      For me the process failed when I tried to press the jumper wires onto the module instead of soldering them. By soldering the wires I could create a stable connection and therefore solve the problem.

      First I would suggest to unplug all wires except for the 3.3v and ground wires. That will allow you to check whether the flashing process really was succesfull.
      If it turns out that the process failed don't panic it can be repeated as often as you want to.
      Also I would advise you to doublecheck that your serial monitor is set to "no line ending".
      I hope that any of these tips will do the trick...

    I tried with both 5v->3v converter and without converter, 4 devices in total (2 kinds) all ended up with same issue that AT commends stopped working. Do I need a pullup/pulldown resistor after the update? After the update I'm able to connect and send commends from my phone to the device and I see them in serial which means that communication from CC2541 to arduino works correctly. It's just that the reverse connection either doesn't work or AT commends just stopped working.
    I would be actually happy to deliver one of my devices to someone who was able to get this working (and can repeat that on my CC2541 boar) to exclude some potential problems (eg. chinese arduino nano board screwing the results which I think is most likely right now).

    • @developandplay

    • @developandplay
      @developandplay  6 лет назад +1

      There seam to be some alternative firmwares on the internet that do support HID on this module. The standard hm10 firmware used in this video and installed on genuine hm10 modules does not support HID. So if you have an unused hm10 module and a lot of free time to flash and maybe troubleshoot the result I would say go for it. If you don't own the module already I would suggest buying a more expensive bluetooth module that comes with hid support built in...

      I have not tried that yet but why wouldn't it? Is android oreo somewhat different than previous android versions?

      developandplay yes it is more secure and doesn't work with fake ble modules

      I'm sorry but LineageOS15/Android Oreo is not available as a stable version for my Oneplus One. So I can't test that. But I will definitely do so in the future.

    Welche Baudrate stellst du für eine Bluetooth Verbindung ein?

      Ich verstehe deine Frage nicht ganz. Soweit ich weiß hat Bluetooth selbst keine Baudrate. Meinst du die Baudrate zur seriellen Kommunikation zwischen arduino und modul?

      Sorry I don't think so. However you might check if there are other firmwares for that chip.

    I got a fake HM-10 from a trusted supplier. Anyway, it's fun to upload firmwares; however, the "Firmware as binary file" link IS BROKEN! Is there another site where it can be gotten?
    Besides that, I'm struggling with following the instructable in Linux, but that's my problem. Now it's more important to get the .bin.
    Thank you!!!

      If it's a trusted supplier that should not happen. Getting a refund might be the better option.

      In the forum they will probably have an updated link.

      @@developandplay The supplier is 30 minutes away, and the module was really cheap. I just buy only one to make some tests. Anyway, I think I must let it know that he's selling a fake module in order to take some actions.
      Regarding to the bin image, I found it in the Huamao web page.
      Now I need to make ccloader to run under Linux =)

    great video...
    My hm-10 led is blinking but firmware upload has failed
    it shows following error...
    Waiting for respond from Arduino...
    No chip detected!
    Upload Failed!
    File closed!
    Comport closed!
    cant find cause... I'm trying with uno by powering 5v
    also tried with 3.3 v pin connecting it to below reset but same error come
    please help...

    • @developandplay
      @developandplay  7 лет назад +1

      That error never occured to me. However if the upload fails at that stage it's not that big of a deal since your hm-10 wasn't flashed at all. Therefore it retained it's functionality.
      I can only advise you to double check your connections. Also make sure it's the right module. For me only powering the module with 5v gave it enough juce to be operational.
