You do make it look easy but I know it’s not...thanks for sharing...finally getting into my paint...my hubby is using Fairy Chalk Mother snowflake with my paint pixie brush ( gave him 5 minutes instructions on how to not mess my brush up lol) can’t wait to see it!
I've learned to spray or brush (no fun) almost every piece with either shellac or polyurethane (not polycrylic) first. No tannin yellowing and no need to prime afterwards. Do it especially on dark wood pieces. It's the water base primer, paints and even polycrylic that pulls up the tannin bleed through. Ug! Thanks Jami. Good to know I'm not crazy!

I use Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Undercoat Primer, Sealer and Stain Killer as an undercoat before I chalk paint, really good white colour and washes out in water. Never had any problems with it.

Sometimes I do if I’m worried the entire piece will bleed through. Mostly it’s a cost issue and I just want to shellac the areas that bleed through so I use less shellac.
I do not know if you will get this comment but you can get most pen and marker marks off of anything, including fabric with rubbing alcohol. You can also get some light scratches and dents out of some woods by steam ironing it with a wet rag. It will take a few tries with letting it dry in between.

Yay! Another idea for my brain to file away for later! Lots of beat up furniture is up for auction in my area. Folks don't want it because it isn't perfect, so $5-$10 bucks is about as high as it goes.
So after you complete a piece of furniture do you have to let it cure for 30 days before selling it? That does not seem to help with turnover and sales
Great question! We don’t wait the 30 days to sell a piece, if the finish is fresh we let the buyer know so they can take proper care measures while the finish fully cures.
It is easy to clean. You’ll want to wait 30 days to allow it to cure hard before you really scrub on it. Sometimes it’s if it’s a high use item like a tabletop you may want to occasionally reapply.
Hi jami and Zeb. Do u shellac the whole thing and then just continue to just spot shellac the spots that that come through or are you shellacking the whole thing 3 or 4 coats until u don’t see any bleed through ? Does that question make sense Ton u?
We just spot shellac, unless the piece is very small, like a bread box, then we cover the whole piece. Some pieces only take one coat of shellac and repaint. Others take 3-4. The most I’ve had to do is about 7 coats on a stubborn stain lol.
I have a question. I have an old dry sink I am revamping. It had been pretty beat up. I had to replace a door and some trim. So those area's are clearly bare wood compared to the rest of it which looks like a medium colored wood. I thought if I sanded it to get the vintage look the areas would not match. I thought about putting a color down first then a white chalk on top. and only sand to the first color instead of till I see bare wood. What is your advise and have you ever done this.
When Zeb replaces pieces for me we usually stain the wood to be close to what the original has aged to, then paint. But if you’re lightly distressing and doing multiple colors it shouldn’t be an issue.
Linda Dillon yes. But I haven’t noticed it as bad as like polyacrylic. So somewhere kinda in the middle between a wax and a liquid top coat if that makes sense :)

Jami Ray Vintage - it’s in direct sunlight when I open my blinds during the day. They are like finger tipped size mustard colored spots. The paint is a mat finish very little shine to it
I we weren’t distressing we probably would have just removed them but I like them with a little chippy paint on them. It’s all personal preference. I always paint hinges too. Lol.
Can you use the sclack as your top coat? Your night stands turned out beautiful. I am in the process of painting my kitchen cabinets...I just started and I am already seeing yellowing. I am so hoping the schlack will take care of it.

I would say you could paint the back splash tiles and paint them and seal them easily. The counter’s might not hold up as well since they usually get lots of water and grease on them.
Thank you for the tips on yellowing! I'm working on a piece right now that is old, but will be used in the kitchen as an island so I need to use a clear topcoat. I used Rustoleum Chalked paint in Aged Gray and then followed with the Rustoleum Chalked Clear Matte Coat. I also primed with Zinnser 123 primer and I am getting serious yellow on some parts. I will refinish with a shellac now, but would like to know what clear matte coat you would recommend that is least likely to yellow? I cant use wax because it will be a kitchen island and we have 3 dogs in there alot too.
We use sweet pickins Top Coat for matte finishes. It won’t yellow. If you do get yellowing it’s from something coming up through it. In a kitchen I would probably do 3-4 coats. Most liquid top coats require 30 days to fully cure so keep that in mind.
And the shellac primer should stop the yellow from coming through for sure? It's only in spots so I'm thinking it's definitely coming through from the wood.
I had a pair of nightstands made that way when I was a kid....before we thought it was cool LOL. Is there a reason you don't do a sealer/primer like Kilz on the piece before you paint to stop the bleed thru?
I’ve used several types of primers and haven’t found one that is foolproof at blocking stains and bleed through yet. The shellac seems to work the best for me.
I am filing this little tip away in my old! Thanks! Kilz has always worked well for me, with one exception (an old chair) and I haven't chalk painted it pair for fear it would happen again - so this might be my solution!!!

Why shellac verses primer? I'm doing a french desk and it's bleeding like crazy all over. Does the shellac just create a barrier? Just joined your channel, love it. I've been painting for 12 years and selling @ Chic For Me and Never heard of this. If you could just tell me why that verse the primer 123 etc. Thanks!!
The Zinser Shellac is oil based and it does create a barrier. I do 2-3 coats because like most dealers it will usually pull some of the stain through as it dries but by the second or 3rd coat it locks it in. I’ve tried several primers and not been able to get the same results with the shellac without quite a few more coats. Hope that helps!
Why don’t you shellac as your first step? It just seems that it happens pretty often so it would save you time in the long run if you just shellacked every piece first (especially the ones you know are old). Just a thought. I’ve been watching y’all for a while and live your videos. This thought just occurred to me and I thought it would be helpful. 😊
Thanks! We do on spray the whole piece on small pieces like this from time to time but I wanted to show all of the steps for the video. On a big piece like a hutch or piano we find it’s easier to paint it, see where the bad areas are, then shellac. And then occasionally we see that really old piece where you can just tell by feeling it that all the oils from 100 years are gonna come through the paint. Then we stock up on shellac and go to town!

Yeah, if you’re going to be sliding anything across it on a regular basis, like a laptop or mouse, I would use Poly. 👍
I shellac my vintage pieces before painting to avoid the extra work. Especially mahogany since 10/10 times it will bleed through

We use a paint pixie charcoal soap because it also conditions the brush...but dawn dish soap works well too.

Because they don't know where the bleed through will be. So, spraying the whole thing with shellac would be a waste.

To deal with bleed thorough or to cover up smells is schellac the same as polycrilic?
I find shellac to be superior. Polycrylic seems to take too many coats. Usually with shellac it only takes 1-2 and it dries very fast.

Yes. Spray the shellac. Let it dry, repaint that spot. Then you can seal that spot again. 👍

We stamp them on the inside of a drawer. Zeb wood burns a little bird from our logo on things he hand makes.

Thanks! We do on spray the whole piece on small pieces like this from time to time but I wanted to show all of the steps for the video. On a big piece like a hutch or piano we find it’s easier to paint it, see where the bad areas are, then shellac. And then occasionally we see that really old piece where you can just tell by feeling it that all the oils from 100 years are gonna come through the paint. Then we stock up on shellac and go to town!
