      True. I think the best we got as a representation in that game was the Profound Darkness itself being a boss fight in the game, even though it looks nowhere near as creepy as in PS4 (though at least we get a nice remixed version of the theme for the first 2 phases)

    I think this is probably the closest to the perfect JRPG ending anyone's ever achieved.
    You didn't play the whole game to find out whether your party was going to save the world. You played it because you cared about THEM, because the bond they form between each other mirrors the bond you form with them - as anyone does with fiction they enjoy - and now, you all have to let each other go.

      PSO was incredibly influential in its own right and far from average.

      @aionarkhe5260 7 лет назад +10

      Actually, I may be remembering wrong but at the time all of the big name reviewers kind of gave it the ho-hum treatment. It only became the big hit it's seen as today later on, after SEGA - making their decisions based purely on various market stats - turned the franchise into an online experience. That's ALWAYS been Sega's Achilles, a complete inability to use anything in their decision making aside from hard numbers, and is why obvious no-brainer sales are lost. How many easy money franchises have been lost in the mix, now? Too many to count. Phantasy Star today exists in name and lore only I suppose, but the core philosophy behind the games is completely gone and sort of counts in that respect as a lost franchise.

    For some reason I find the ending very depressing.
    Having read up on all the entries in the classic Phantasy Star series (including the disliked 3) over the years I have developed somewhat of an affection for the universe.
    I find it rather sad that the advanced civilization of PS1 and 2 is gone and will probably never return, or that the protagonist Alis Landale is dead even though I know she died two thousand years ago, probably after living a long and full life.
    Heh the game is 21 years old and I still feel sad.

      @torers  9 лет назад +4

    • @TheDutchGhost
      @TheDutchGhost 9 лет назад

      ***** Are those tracks also from PSIV
      Also which mangas are you talking about? I have been looking for expansion material on the classic PS series.
      And with the Compendium, do you mean what Yoshida-sh had in mind for Chaz and Rika's future?

    • @torers
      @torers  9 лет назад +2

      TheDutchGhost
      Yes, those are the official track names for the two individual ending sequences. The mangas can be found on pscave (quick google search will find it). And yes, I'm referring to that where Chaz dies at the age of 40 and Rika and their child end up becoming the greatest Hunters that ever lived on Motavia.

    • @TheDutchGhost
      @TheDutchGhost 9 лет назад +4

      ***** I do know that site (have it book marked) but all I can find are comics made by fans, comics based on PSO, and those loose 'gag' comics.
      Would you happen to mean those 'choose your own adventure' books? (Phantasy Star Futubasha)
      From what I understand Chaz would die before he reached his thirties (shows how harsh Post Collapse Motavia has become :( )
      It is sad that they never made a Phantasy Star V and instead went with PSO.
      Truth be told I much more prefer the Classic Phantasy Star universe (the planets, settings, species, lore, and so on) over the online games.
      I know PSIV is a proper ending to the saga but I would have loved to have seen a fifth game, perhaps showing a somewhat recovered Motavia and Dezolis that has re establish a new civilization, and dealing with the Great Light as the producers of PSIV were considering.
      Personally I think the Great Light does not necessary have to mean that it is good.
      The Profound Darkness was of course evil, it wanted to destroy everything, but I think that that also came from the fact that it was locked away, just getting angrier and angrier over the centuries as it wanted to get out.
      I don't think it necessarily 'hated' the Palmans, Motavias, Dezolians etc. it just 'stepped' onto them so to speak in an effort to gain its freedom, and it made use of people's dark side and desires to control them for that goal.

    • @torers
      @torers  9 лет назад +5

      TheDutchGhost
      The Great Light wasn't inherently good, Chaz's reaction to being a Protector is great evidence of that. I could of swore there was two official mangas, most of them are fan made though, yes. I prefer the whole franchise up until PSO2.

    @JunmaiShu 9 лет назад +10

    Using both Deban & Blessing is redundant. The game will default to the last one used, it's not cumulative. So you're best off using the stronger one, and that one only (which is Blessing). So use that & Wren's Barrier, and have Rika use Saner. Then have Rika use Shift twice, on both Chaz and then herself.
    Then use: Posibolt, Crosscut, Double Slash, Effess, St. Fire... as they are the strongest attacks your 5 guys have against PD.
    Also the Psycho Wand limits magical damage, so I'd have someone use that in the first round against PD's final 2 forms. It works against Shadow Flare, Another Gate, and Megid.

    • @Ander01SE
      @Ander01SE 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Basically you need to get the order right with no enemy attacks in between. 'Safest' is to start with the char who usually attacks last in a macro that way the enemies should usually have finished their attacks, really depends on the enemies though. :p
      In general the combos are more successful if you put the combo chars first or last in the macro. And the order they're cast also plays a part, Efess need to be cast before Crosscut if I remember correctly. Been a while since I played it. O_o

    I finally went back to beat this game again. I went even lower level this time
    Level 37 average this time. It was hella hard I couldn't afford making a mistake in the PD 3rd form.
    Bought alot of Star dews and Sol dew as back up in case Raja died, cause that megid would take out 70%-80% of my entire team hp (except Wren he a tank)
    Phase one I just saved all my tech and skills til phase 2 and 3. Would use items like gaurd rod and cheap tp healing and buff everyone up with ,barrier, Deban, shift and Saner. And just use regular attacks one phase 1 and 2
    Them sol dew and star dew are a must have. They saved me from a mess up I did, the damn PD 3 used cancel and lost all my buff and lost Raja,Rika,rune since megid did way too much damage without my barrier. And thanks to Wren hp he basically solo healed the entire party and Chaz just healed up with star dew til Raja was back up. Man I love this game. And big shame a phantasy star 5 continued.

    • @orzConqueror

      Yeah, keeping Saner, Blessing and Barrier up at all times is a necessity, but you can beat the thing at level 37 with them. You'll get a few scares where you have to revive Raja, but even just strolling through the game with no grinding will leave you with a fat stack of Moon and Star Dew to recover when your usual everyone-attack-raja-heals pattern gets broken.

      @orzConqueror 2 года назад +1

      I know it's a matter of preference, but this game worked well with just doing the battles that the game presents you with as you go through the game, only at a couple of spots I felt the need of grinding a couple of levels. The thing is that the boss fights tend to be not too far in difficulty from the mook battles, so you have to get accustomed to the random battles being tough. A battle where that wasn't the case was Lashiec, there's no outsmarting his nukes, you have to be at least level 31 or so across the board to even get a chance to heal between his attacks.

    Look like Chaz finally get to spend the rest of his life with Rika, something that Rolf haven't got the chance during Phantasy Star 2. At least they finally beat the root of the Algo System's sorrows.

    Saddest ending for me. I almost cried when I was like 12 and watching this ending. Like, But...rune...never? You'll never come and visit? Just once? No visiting the other planet? No one will see each other again? Im sooooo sad.

      Big Moore Now I have to play this game all over again. I bought this brand new badass PC, and I find myself playing Playstation 1 and Sega and Supernintendo games on it cause of all these heroin like nostalgic memories i get from playing them.

    I felt like it took me ages to beat this boss. I look back and it only took me a few months in reality (the game, not the boss) but that feeling when I finally beat it was so awesome, and bitter sweet. I was 12 I think when I played it and spent many a weekend night up all night playing. But when I beat it, I got sad as I loved the game, and series, and now it was over.

    Barrier and Deban are absolutely crucial for this shit. barrier every single turn with wren and just dish out the damage with Chaz, Rika, and rune, heal with raja.

  • @victoryanchaguano7040

    I have no idea how I beat this with level 40-50 characters. I remember that raja was the mvp of the team. Cause if I remember correctly he had magical attacks that damage darkness type and he had alot of mp to heal the whole team and he even had a revive ability which was very very crucial. Wren would carry revive items since he can tank damage and the rest would be damage dealers.

    There were changes to the script of the English version over Japanese version. Namely PD/GL being armies of a sort. What confuses me now, is if they were ever "whole" like the English states in the very beginning. And what Le Roof said, "[GL] has gone away..." what exactly would the line in Japanese have been? :S

    • @torers
      @torers  7 лет назад

      The way I've non-canonically assumed what happened is that Le-Roof and the others were denizens of that same army of light spirits. The Great Light happened to leave the Algol Star System to create new seals throughout the cosmos. This would work in tandem with the fact that Dark Falz appears elsewhere in the universe besides Algol in later installments in the franchise.

      Lots of boss fights in this game are more of a marathon than a sprint, keep hitting them for some completely ordinary amount of damage and keep your buffs and health up, and you'll outlast them
      It was super blatant with the witches in service of Lashiec, if you used your favorite area damage combos you got total party killed by them, so, patiently take them out one by one and heal/revive your team mates.
