    I had a really crappy boss when I began my career, who used to take my research and put her name to it despite having done none of the work. She would have me explain the findings to her, and then just take it. She would never credit me, only her name. As a research scientist, we need our publication credits for future work. I had complained, but because she was the department head, no one really did anything. It went on for well over two years, and I had zero publication credits, despite so much work and research. We had a cross-institution conference with the Max Planck institute, where she was scheduled to speak representing our university. I happen to speak German, so I translated a paper which had been published years ago, by one of the professors she was addressing. Per usual, she placed her name, and her name alone, on it and presented it as her own work. I was able to attend as it was a conference, and it was so lovely watching her deliver a completely plagiarized paper, confidently, to the original author. I had a new department director very soon and my first publication not soon after. I hope she is still unemployed 22 years later. If I found her now, I would do it again, thieving cow.

      It’s basically invalidating your reaction whilst not taking any responsibility, as if somehow you’ve magically just become upset or even blaming you because most people wouldn’t be. You could say the same thing differently, especially when dealing with narcissists who think you need to think the same way they do, “I’m sorry that what I said hurt/upset/bothered you but I felt it important to communicate this concept because…”. To my mind, I think it addresses when you have to tell someone something that you know will anger them but it must be done.

    Let me speak to the "I'm sorry you're so upset." That is actually a tactic taught in hospitality/ restaurants. It helps staff protect themselves mentally by basically acknowledging that what they are being yelled at about is not at all about them or their fault. "I'm so sorry this was your experience." "I do apologized that you were not 100% pleased with the quality of your meal." Etc

    • @TheBaumcm

Instead of listening to me and talking me through it or apologizing when they needed to they used this among many other manipulative phrases to make me seem like the bad guy or like I was crazy/overreacting. It always made me feel invalidated and that how I felt wasn't important. (This isn't any hate towards you. I absolutely LOVE your channel and your content. You’re totally correct. This phrase would be best used on a Karen or someone similar. Like if a customer is yelling at you for some stupid thing, “I’m sorry you’re so upset,” is perfect. I fully agree it is gaslighting and a way to invalidate feelings and shouldn’t be used in a loving relationship.

    • @ladygodieva6298
      @ladygodieva6298 3 года назад +16

      Chlo4Mo I agree.
      And context is crucial. In the context of strangers who are being objectively unreasonable (think bully Karens, bigots, misogynists, and the like...) then this is a fun way to give a jab at their vitriolic tantrums lol. BUT within the context of a relationship? Very common tactic used by emotionally/psychologically abusive people. They do it to devalue someone's emotional processing when said person (rightfully) expresses hurt by something legitimately hurtful the abuser does or says. This is just an attempt by the abuser to avoid taking accountability for any negative impact they may have on others. A common addition to this tactic is the phrase "If you're upset with me, then that's YOUR problem." It all boils down to the abuser's selfishness, immaturity, and cowardice.

    Just in the spirit of pettiness I’ll share a story. This wasn’t me but my best friend. Legit queen of pettiness if it weren’t for you. Anyways! So this was quite a few years ago before she was married and was at college. Her now husband but boyfriend at the time would cook for her and would always have leftovers. Well her roommates would always eat her leftovers. There was a particular time that she was super pissed because it was like one of her fav meals that they ate. Well to get back at them as she had already tried talking to them and they never listened. She decided to make them brownies with a special ingredient. Mind you this was around when finals were happening and let’s just say they never made it due to them being stuck in the bathroom👌🏻

    In some places you don’t actually own the land your house is on, you just own the house. And some places have very strict rules like how tall your grass can be or what color/style fence you can have and what can actually be on the lawn. As in maybe you aren’t allowed to have décor on the actual grass but you can have lights/wreath on the house. Or maybe you can have small decorations like walkway lights but not a 12 foot skeleton on Halloween or giant blowup Santa/snowman for Christmas.
