Wow, I had no idea they made twin-tubs with a vertical agitator like a top-loader! I live in the US, so I've never seen a twin-tub in person (and I've actually seen old top-loaders with a wringer/mangle!)
The heater ought to be switched off before engaging the wash timer control to avoid drawing too much current on the initial start up of the agitator. Sounds like it still has its original Smiths timer.
