If you re not enterprise, or not ready to pay for managed k8, go with nomad, it’s worth it

How k3s compare with nomad? The k3s design to simplify and smaller footprint than k8s. It’s seem like k3s is more comparable to nomad than standard k8s.

k3s still implements the k8s spec, so it's essentially k8s in the end

if you don''t have the team and the business to handle Kubernetes its not worth it 90% of the time. we tend to over engineer with Kubernetes to me k3s,k0s is still and all the variants are still a beast..but if you need alot of things in kubernetees, you are better of with a managed kubernetees AKS and GKE at least then you reduce your own load instead of rolling your own. but if you want simplicity nomad,docker-compose are fine in a roll your own scenario

I am building a small application (side project) which will have 6 micro-services and 5 databases. I was thinking about placing them in a K8 cluster in a comp at home since AWS will burn the startup credits in a few months. Then a devops friend mentioned nomad. I am a soft engineer, not a devops but I will have to do all that management for my side project. Do you recomend still nomad for a person who is not an expert in the subject, or K8 can be more friendly user for none experts?

As of August 2023, Nomad is not open source any more. It is under Business Source License (BSL), which is NOT open source. You can think of Nomad however you wish (it does sound like a great piece of software), but don't call it open source. For one thing, it does not have the freedom 0 - "The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose."
