I was going to skip this one because I've recorded guitars for years in reaper. I thought there was no way you'd have anything new. Man, I was wrong. There is so much useful stuff here!
That was stunning. Many thanks, Kenny. I would never have thought of doing this in a thousand years. Now, I need to spend a few days practicing this procedure so that I take it in properly.
For the cpu usage problem i used to use the "freeze track" - "unfreeze track" option that i learned from you. It' s less complicated but not that flexible as the current method. Thank you!
Kenny, Thank you dude...I've been struggling to get through this learning curve and your videos are the best out there to learn Reaper. Thanks again brother
well, er, reaper is simple, and it's complex. focus on the simple for now, and ignore all those dozens of extra menu items you might ignore. then move on to actions, but use that search bar and bind those actions to your favorite keyboard links. reaper is great, and it is inherently simple, it just has lots of options, which are best ignored at the beginning. it's also super fast, stable. ableton takes 15 seconds for me to load, reaper loads instantly. it also never crashes, except for the rare vst. ableton is great, though. get a copy of it, if you can, efven the free version bundled with a product, thought the 99 dollar version is better. session view is a game changer for auditioning song ideas and song structures. the single window interface is just slightly superior to reaper's. for 60 bucks you can't go wrong with reaper, it's soooo customizable
Kenny today I learned something knew! It would be awesome if you create a mini-series about "Reaper guitar recordings - best practices". There are a lot of videos about recording guitars, but they lack the depth of your expertise. Possible topics: - double takes, quad takes - sequential or parallel effect - organization (folders or sends) - saving CPU Maybe just watch these RUclips videos (especially for heavy metal and hard to rock) then improve in them!
I normally freeze the guitar tracks in order to save on the CPU drain with plugins like Amplitube. Had never thought of doing it this way, looks good. Thanks, Kenny
You can also record guitar DI on one track and printed one with effects on the other at the same time. I prefer having a separate track for additional FX and separate mixing.
Excellent tutorial yet again! I have recorded more guitar tracks direct with plug-ins than I have had hot dinners, and this will really help me make my arranging much more streamlined. Kenny you show us the way in Reaper every time! A thousand thanks.
Ahh this helped me so much! I've been layering different guitars by having the one VST track, then rendering the audio and moving it to its own track so I can then record the next bit. This is so much quicker
Thanks kenny, i like the way you teach us. I use fl studio from 2015, and start use Reaper for recording instead using FL, a couple month ago because of your videos. Your videos easy to understand. Last time i tried to send my guitar record track to another channel to split up, so i get a double track guitar even its same phase. But the cpu overload and lag many times 😂 Now i know how to duplicate same direct track with different fx😊
This is again very helpfull. I use Revalver4 for guitar and bass. When i'm happy with a guitar part i used to render the track to a new stem, whilst keeping the orignal track muted. But this 'as new track' method seems very usefull as well
Absolutely Brilliant....as usual with Kenny. What a star. I've been struggling with exactly this CPU problem, now I have a way out. Only problem I have is my old brain struggles to remember all the great things Kenny explains to me. Not a bad problem to have though. One bit of feedback for Cockos - wherever possible or relevant, try and make something in Preferences a thing that can be changed per item/track and not globally. Reason being is people (especially forgetful ones like me) will change something in preferences and then forget they had done so, or how they did it, or where to get back to to set it back to the original. And then they have a global problem/mystery. On the other hand, in trying to remember what they might have changed, they are more likely to remember that they did something to settings in a track or item to achieve something they wanted to do. Reapers amazing customisability has this arguably negative aspect and so it is really important to keep working on the ergonomics/menu layouts to make it as intuitive as possible for users to find and customise things. But I would not for one minute want Reaper to give up its power for simplicity, that would be a backwards move!
@@guitarplayer1434 Yes. Kenny taught me how to freeze some while back ha ha, and that's what I have been doing....until now. But this is a different presentation and a very interesting concept that might work better for me than just freezing. In truth mind you, and as musicians (more or less) had to do back in the 1970s when I was in bands, you should be capable of making decisions on guitar sound wanted and then rendering those sounds into the mix while recording (after all, we want them for creative/playing inspiration while doing a take so....). But control freaks that we are, the ability to alter things in post by keeping DI source and being able to play around with...is very handy.
Having to go back to an old win7 slow PC. I found this at perfect time!! My hot rod win 10 PC fried gone, toast. So,, I need to not have all the plugs running. Thank you sir! Z.K.
Very similar to the way I've been doing it, but def learned some useful tricks from this vid too. I'd like to see a similar video but instead of guitar with midi drums via Easy/Superior Drummer, Steven Slate Drums etc. The process of that whole thing from writing/importing the midi, auditioning kits and then recording the drums to multitrack.
is well explained , but i dont have the patience to do all these tweaks in the middle of recording guitar. its like an exam to remember many tweaks, and i forget to play guitar
By rendering to a new take you can always go back and reamp the clean sound. love it. One question Kenny- Once second take is printed, why take fx offline when you could simply click the fx off?
I think it is necessary to free CPU power. Just clicking them off makes fx inaudible, but does not remove them from project: they are still in use. At least I think so
Very cool tip. Man, can't believe I never noticed that before. One thing though is a mentor of mine said years ago, never print gates to tape. EDIT: Oh, I have to say the production value of these vids is getting better. Loved those splashes at the end of the video
Another question answered, that was in my head for a time, are you a mind reader, Kenny? Must be 😂 🙏 thanks again, this tutorial is going in my saved ones. Cheers Kenny.
You could probably just create a dryL+wetR with routing in the fx themselves, so that they're only on ch2 and bypass the ch1 and record track stereo output. I didn't test this to confirm, it's just an idea, but this way skips most of these steps and just prints the file.
I've been using the Strymon Big Sky HW with speaker simulate and then post processing as needed with various amp sims in my Reaper DAW, seems to work well most of the time - but sometimes only an amp has the secret sauce (at least for now). REALLY looking forward to Strymon coming out with a more sophisticated Amp sim than the Iridium, maybe with larger Big Sky enclosure - the Iridium has many good settings but I do think there is still room for realism improvement.
Fantastic! Can this be done with 2 inputs as takes on the one track? Eg a Di signal from input 1 and a Mic on a cab on input 4? This is an amazing way to edit!
Hi Kenny, I was nearly too lazy to listen to that. As some say under, I have recorded gt for years, what the heck. What a spectacular mistake ! You always manage to introduce us to something new and unheard. And by the way, you're very "technical" when you approach music but in fact you have really a lot of sensitivity. Thanks for all your sharings.
Kenny, Sweet guitar 🎸 there. I personally love Reaper. It's amazing. I'm actually recording quite a bit of my material. But I still have a ton of things to learn, a couple tons I'd say lol. And every time Kenny puts out a new video is when I understand that I still know very, very little.
Very helpful for me, as I am just in the process of tracking some guitars at home! In case you need inspiration for new topics: I've also been doing some podcast editing in Reaper lately. I'm sure you'd come up with a great tutorial for that scenario as well :D Thanks K-Man!
Cool! Reaper is deep! I knew only the most basic stuff here. Now my question! Is it possible to do something like this with midi instruments, i. e., play the midi back as audio, with the plug-in offline?
can I do this method for rendering a track to audio item in the same track??? like for example the vocal track have many effects and causes an extensive CPU usage/RAM usage I do the bouncing or printing to another track and it consumes a lot of time. BTW thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Mind is blown, that is a lot of steps, but not to bad if you are using Reaper at least three times a week. I suppose I could split my guitar signal going into my DAW by by feeding my interface, guitar on channel one and two so I would have one dry and the other wet. I never knew that I could reduce CPU by putting the effects ahead of the input instead of on the track, where do you learn this stuff?
An Important thing is to learn how MIDI works so you understand it. Most people are happy when things just work and when they make a change and problems happen, they can't figure out why and either give up or pay someone to help.. If you know how midi works then you can quite often see the cause of the problem. An example is that I have a 4 port powered midi thru box.the midi in port is connected to my computer and each of the 4 outs is connected to a different hardware synth. Most people don't realize that midi requires some power. Before having the powered box, I used to get intermittent issues, especially when sending midi to multiple synths at the same time. I bet you don't know anyone who has a powered midi thru box. Since I know how midi works, I figured out that it would probably solve my problem, and it did. Another thing is that many people daisy chain their midi devices Instead of using a midi thru box, which is a hub for midi. The huge benefit is that if one target device is defective, the others will not be effected. With daisy chaining, if a device doesn't handle the midi correctly, it screws up the midi going to all the devices. After it in the chain. Sorry for such a long story but I felt like giving you a real good example of the value of understanding how midi works and what it requires.to work best for a particular requirement. Remember this piece of advice: if you want to send midi to multiple places from one port on your computer, the best device to use is a midi thru box and if it is powered, even better. Have fun.
Kenny, does your amp fx have a compressor built in? The raw track looks like it's quiet to start and louder at the end but the fx channel seems more balanced. It's that what the gate plugin does?
er, i've used reaper for five years. i don't think it has that feature, but you shouldn't nead it. maybe use the reasampler and chop the sample to be in tempo, but i'm pretty pretty pretty (larry david voice) sure there's no audio quantizing. but what do i know?, i've only used it for 5 years....not even ableton has 'audio quantize'. sure you can chop and warp, which is nowhere as easy as quantizing midi stuff.
Another great vid, question: what is the processing difference between taking the effects offline vs. disabling the track fx (unchecking boxes or the power button on track fx icon)? I typically just turn effects "off" rather than taking them offline, and I'm wondering if that means I'm doing something wrong. Or at least, something inefficient. Thanks!
Kenny, you’re by far the best but this threw me off a bit. Question: would recording a single pass (take) on to two separate tracks, one with printed effects and the other dry work ? This way, you would only need to enable or disable the tracks you need at any given time possibly saving a few steps ?
Thanks for the great tutor, Kenny! One thing is not clear to me: we have a mono guitar track (at the end) but I still hear the stereo delay. So mono tracks can have stereo fx? How does that work?
Hum, I was looking for how to record the effects Live? My issue is using a Pedal and changing it doesn't get recorded onto the track when I'm using a MiDi Pedal?
Great video Kenny! But I don't get why you have to put the FX offline the way you do. Why can't you just turn off the track FX from the power toggle on the track?
I just subscribed to you recently because I want to figure this stuff out but I have no idea how to begin. Is there a video you have a few steps before this one to give me an idea of how to get started on getting what I’m playing on the guitar to show up on the screen
Hey! I have a burning question: when I recorded my guitar, and play it back, I can’t hear it. I have headphones plugged in, my speakers on, but I don’t hear anything. How? Also, how to save it as MP3?
That's nice and all but I want my Engl ironball head straight into Reaper, I have an I rig and it has an input for the guitar and one for the amp but all I get is wavy sounding non amp sounding delayed guitar out of it, how do I use the I rig plugged in through the 3.5 hp jack into my pc with one jack to my guitar and the other from the heads input jack that both go into the I rig, if that makes any sense, thanks
how are you hearing the vst plugin while you are recording??? I have been searching for a way to do this for a long time and cannot find any tutorial on it. No matter how I set things up in reaper all I ever hear is the direct guitar sound with no IRs or Amp sim... any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
I have no idea what's causing the problem I'm having. For whatever reason everything sounds horrible on my pc when I play anything on my DAW. I thought maybe my guitar or Audio Interface was the problem, but no. I downloaded some good sounding DI tracks online and when I put them into my DAW they sound very muffled and muddy. What am I doing wrong?! It must be an issue with my pc? But then again I've even switched over to my laptop and it's the same thing.
I have Guitar rig 6, native. And waves. guitar footpedals. I can't use either one. Cause the vst is much quieter than my clean direct, focusrite. Tele . And as soon as I hit record the effects dissappear. Is this a routing problem. I'm going crazy for a guitar on tracks. Can't get Anything Like a useable guitar sound. HELLLP.

Putting the "joy" in Gioia!
Hello I just started using Reaper and I cannot get the guitar signal to show up on the VU meter, please tell how do I fix this? I've tried everything!
how are you hearing the vst plugin while you are recording??? I have been searching for a way to do this for a long time and cannot find any tutorial on it. No matter how I set things up in reaper all I ever hear is the direct guitar sound with no IRs or Amp sim... any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
i have a problem (new) when i record guitar track i cannot see the track(frequencies) printed but when i finish it it appears.
Can we have a video on how to use reaper for live performance?
What hardwares do you use? I only have the ordinary irig. How can I use it to record to reaper? Thank you
I'm getting clean guitar in my headphones as well as the FX.How do I disable the clean guitar in my headphones so I just hear the FX?
Why zzz n buzzing noise whn select or press record arm button???
Tele
. And as soon as I hit record the effects dissappear. Is this a routing problem. I'm going crazy for a guitar on tracks. Can't get Anything Like a useable guitar sound. HELLLP.
user error
Wow thanks I was wondering why my pc was freezing, and Reaper was crashing. Totally overwhelming my cpu
Thank you.
March 2022 - I build this (see below) as part of my go to template... works on my perfectly useful i7 4790K not over clocked 32gb 1600 ram at 128 spls (I monitor through ADAM A7X... so pretty damn crystal and clean) usually but does actually work down to 32 spls depending on other loads... use for acoustic DI or my Strat... enjoy
Guitar DI or mic -> Safe Sound Audio P1 Compressor -> RME PCI HDSP9632 -> I create channels as follows: Reaper IN channel (located nested under MIX Bus channel, where right click on MIX BUS pan law set 0.0db and same on GTR IN channel). This is my clean take channel input record - I can dump specific takes to a couple of dump tracks I'll create under it as I go. Then send GTR IN to GTR AMP FX channel (uncheck routing so NOT MIX Bus parent) -> nested under GTR BUS channel / folder... where... pan law again set on GTR Bus at 0.0db... Now on that GTR AMP FX channel: free VSTs used (Analog Obsession) LALA an LA-2A Comp... -> mvMeter2 (TBProAudio) -> (Kuassa) Efektor GQ3607 -> Efektor Silencer (Kuassa) -> NA Clon Minotaur (Nembrini Audio) -> ODR-1 (Lancaster Audio) cost a small £'s -> Terraform UVibe (Wampler) -> VREV-666 (Fuse Audio Labs) Spring verb -> Raven_Volcanic (VTarAmps) -> TPA-1 v1.0.1 x64 (Ignite Amps) -> Ignite - NadIR (STL Tones) Spkr Cab with Left IR Princeton 2x12 and Right IR Fender Bassman - - - This feeds to GTR Bus with a non free vst channel transformer True Iron (Kazrog) cheap £ and set to Sylvia Massey settings - see my third party presets zip file... stash.reaper.fm/browse.php?q=pnr&x=0&y=0

Dead Zone! Nice!

What if the playback on my guitar track is delayed by ~1/4th of a second? It's impossible for me to play/record to a backing track
I had the same issue. For me it is because of the laptop I was using. Mackbook solved the issue
goddamn gotta watch this at 13x speed
I recently bought an audio interface and plugged my guitar directly into the interface instr port theninto my Mac computer and I got no signal on my track record in my guitar I’m selected the correct inputs and the audio interface required no driver I’m sort of stuck and I really want to record my song
