Bernard Cribbins is an absolute British legend, had a career lasting over 80 years and his performance here was one of my favourite guest appearances, sad to have lost him in 2022

As you've probably heard already, Fawlty was based on Donald Sinclair of the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay. All the Pythons stayed there, whilst on filming location, but all moved out apart from Cleese, who found him hilarious. Eric Idle walked when he left a bag in the hotel foyer, but later found it deposited behind a garden wall. Apparently Sinclair thought it was a bomb, as he'd lately been having staff problems.

My first wife worked there as a teenager and she could relate a number of stories about his behaviour that could have been used in the series!

That bit right at the end when Basil realises that the three guys ar reception are the real Hotel Inspectors and screams is one of the most memorable and iconic endings to a sitcom episode in British comedy history.

Go Megan. Salute to two great character actors here in the versatile, prolific Bernard Cribbins (spoons) and James Cousins (outboard motors) who tended to specialise in sruiffy auithoritarian types. Both are part of a fine parade of guest actors throughout the series who have all since passed.
For once your predictions proved wildly incorrect. Ha ha gotcha - no shame in that. As you've mentioned probs with London contractors in the past, an old favorite comedy number by Cribbiins about dodgy Cockney tradies is well worth checking our. It's called "Right, said Fred'.

Looking mighty fine as always Megan. I believe the late Bernard Cribbins ("SPPPOOONNNNSSS") said that this was one of the best, and most profitable "gigs" as an actor, he ever did.

The mighty Cribbins, who left us recently. But the whole thing is a joy. Basil's paranoia being ramped up to 11 is the whole driver of it. Although Cleese was always hugely generous about his co-stars.

His corkscrew broke, that's what caused the problem for him as back in the 70's they weren't often the easy open cork pulling corkscrews. I myself use a 'Waiters Mate' or 'Waiters Friend' as they are far more efficient and I would most definitely recommend one if you are a wine drinker yourself of wine that still uses corks that is though as sadly now most wine bottles have screw lids! 😢😭

Good 'ol Major! One episode he thought a Moose head was really talking to him when it was really Manuel. In another, he tried to kill a rat with his shot gun. And my favorite is when he forgot about the winning horse race money Basil had given him to hold for him so that Sybil wouldn't find out.

Bernard Cribbins is a much missed celebrity among many viewers over a certain age here in the UK. He and Richard Briers were a couple of the nicest and most audience-friendly comedy actors, both with long careers and often with plenty of anecdotes to tell. He died in 2022 aged 93, and had still being appearing in TV shows and on radio up until then.
The payoff at the end of this episode when Fawlty realises the real hotel inspectors have arrived is one of my favourite parts of the whole series, and my favourite ending!

Basil was definitely in an old comic as the Beefeater
Created by Keith Giffen, Gerard Jones, and Marshall Rogers, Beefeater was originally created as a parody of Basil Fawlty, the protagonist of the British sitcom Fawlty Towers. Armed with a power-rod that can inflict an unknown amount of damage, Beefeater originally set out to be Britain's savior, but caused chaos in his wake.

    • @ianharrison3662
      @ianharrison3662 5 месяцев назад

If my memory serves me right, the comic was Justice League Europe and the Beefeater/Basil character was actually the admin manager of the JLE HQ in Paris - complete with Sybil lookalike and Spanish underling.

Basil needs one of those corkscrews with the bottle opener on it I was a barman and I never failed to open a bottle of wine with that, you put the corkscrew in as normal and use the bottle opener to lever the cork out.

There are three episodes you have to see if you're going to watch Fawlty Towers. "The Germans", " The Kipper and the Corpse" and "communication problems". I used to watch this show with my Great Grandad and these three episodes had us crying with laughter.

The major is unfortunately clearly suffering from some kind of dementia. He's barely aware of what's going on around him most of the time. Great character nonetheless.🙂

This is very old comedy most of the younger generation both in UK and Canada now watch US based comedy which is extremely well written and is more in touch with it's audience, pity that we could not get more well written comedy from countries other than US out there, from working in this industry it's all about cost and the finances to distribute not just the quality of the material.

I like your reactions, but that sound everytime the scene cuts is very annoying. To me audio is most important, since I often got youtube in the background, while im doing something else. I don't mind watermarks or a blurry picture to avoid copyright, as long as audio is good.
