Thanks Alice, Robyn knows her plants, these are the main ones that are grown commercially and even with those there are lots more varieties. We hope to have a specific video on repotting these wonderful ferns very soon.
Very useful info in the video. I find that if I water my five finger maiden hair a little bit every day it does well, making sure to make the top of the soil moist but not soak the pot. I bottom soak it for an hour once a week and don’t top water that day. They like very bright indirect light indoors near my south windowh(north hemisphere)

I employed the water trays and got them into a little bit more light, and hopefully they will do lots better than in the past. I always had the feeling I was barely keeping them alive.....love to hear any information about their native habitat, so helpful....Cara
Hello Cara, we will hopefully have a video on repotting and dividing maidenhair ferns soon. So good filtered light, moist but not soggy soil, roots with access to water below in a saucer and some liquid seaweed fertiliser (weak strength) allowed to sit in the trays. Also wash out the trays every week or two.
@@johnnyAGardening thanks Johnny, I may need to repot to achieve 'moist but not soggy'. They are potted in what I bought them in, and I would classify that as soggy. Do you know if anyone grows these in sphagnum moss and net pots? That works so well for some plants, especially those that love constant moisture and air flow simultaneously.....So far they seem to like constant access to water in the tray. I have been using distilled as our tap water is a little hard, around 200 ppm. I will give them some seaweed fert tomorrow. Thanks again! I really want to succeed with these lovely ferns....

Thanks Shweatha, ferns are a very diverse group, lots more varieties than most nurseries sell, so specialist nurseries like Fern Acres are the place for variety.
Just found a Adiantum Cunninghamii between 2 rocks in my backyard last night, never saw a fern in my yard before far less for a maidenhair variety, I took it & potted it up this morning , hoping it grows big & healthy, wish me luck 😊

I think that one is either Adiantum pubescens, (or) sometimes confused with A. hispidulum. More likely the former. It depends where you are located as to availability.
I want to make a vertical wall of maidenhair - the wall is out of direct sunlight. I live in Melbourne - have you any recommendations (including discouraging me from trying this).
Hello Diane, it could be done, proper sub-strata and irrigation. Not sure that Maidenhair ferns would be the best choice though, others may suit better,. Pyrrosia rupestris maybe. I would think you need to talk to two experts. Number one, Robyn from Fern Acres Nursery in Kinglake. Two, John Rayner at Burnley Horticultural College (Melb Uni) or he may refer you on to someone else. Between the two they can give you better advice than I could. If you decide to go ahead with it, I would love to be able to follow what you do.

The summer temperatures can be an issue, especially as these plants like moisture and in hight temperatures that means humidity as well. so try to keep good air flow in summer. In winter some protection from extreme cold, so indoors will be best and not to wet over winter.
why does mine go brown edges some people dont have a tray of pebbles and water with tap water and they grow very nice I use rain water and pebbles and water and they turn brown edges and die

I put mine with pebbles, spray everyday with rain waiter , filter light and it dying everyday the frond turns curl up from the tip and dye, not brown Only have a few fronds left so what is wrong? soil with sandy and soil , and peat, is always moist and fertilizer with organic no new growth . what is wrong ?????

Ferns grow in a range of situations in nature, many species in shade and many in damp shade. Some grow as epiphytes (in trees) other are terrestrial (on the ground), so it really depends on the species as to what the natural habitat is. MOST maidenhair fern species grow in shaded positions in moist soils.

Yes, good filtered light is important for good growth. A lot of variety in this group of plants.
