Nationality does not equal to race 🤦♀️ You can be black and be borne and raised in... let's say canada and be Canadian regardless if your parents or ancestors are from some country in Africa
I don’t think they where arguing otherwise though. It’s funny that you bring up the concept of identity markers relative to SOVEREIGN nation states though. Had Hawai’i been given the chance to actually grow as a separate nation as it once was maybe it would’ve had similar equal access to integration (which doesn’t even cover the subjugation of First-Nations/Inuit/Métis within Canada. But I digress, because the main point for all intents and purposes was that (and while yes, nationalities do exist) ETHNICITY was the focus here. For example even within Canada (which is just…not that Hawai’i isn’t but your example is a little extreme, the most multi-cultural society on the planet compared to a small colonized Island of indigenous peoples? =/) there are what you’d consider Canadians by ethnicity, being born here, or tied to the land by language culture or race or those who have come here and intergraded respectfully into the culture.

yup back in the day everybody that arrived in hawaii was considered hawaiian because hawaii was its own country. blood connection was considered kanaka maoli
Correct, not all locals in Hawaii are native Hawaiians. The term "local" in Hawaii refers to people who have lived in the state for a long time, regardless of their ethnic background. Since Hawaii is a culturally diverse state, and its population includes people of various ethnicities. The term "Hawaiian" typically refers specifically to individuals who are descendants of the indigenous Polynesian people who inhabited the islands *before* European contact.
@@user-sg8kq7ii3y that’s where things get complicated. My tutu told me that because Hawai’i was, at a time, its own country its nationality was Hawaiian. However once Hawaii became a part of the US the term “Hawaiian” became an ethnicity (Native Hawaiian) rather than a nationality. Which is why Hawaiian is typically used to refer to people of Hawaiian ancestry. Otherwise we just use the term Hawaiian Resident to refer to locals who aren’t Hawaiian by ancestry. And for those of us who are Hawaiian by ancestry it’s either Kanaka Maoli, like you said, or Native Hawaiian. Never really heard of a Hawaiian Resident being called Native Hawaiian though, that’s a new one.
@@user-sg8kq7ii3y idk personally I think there’s a lot of confusion especially when coming with the overthrow and, of course, everyone has their own opinions. But a lot of Kumu’s that I know have said that being born and raised in Hawaii doesn’t make you Hawaiian. Merely a Hawaiian Resident or Kama’aina.
Sort of true. I lived in Hawaii for 13 years. Local is someone born in Hawaii. Many different ethnicities from Polynesian roots to Chinese, Filipino, etc. You can be Caucasian and born there, so technically a Local, but visually you won't be recognized as one. Totally accepted by most people, though. Pure Hawaiian roots which come from originally the Marqueses and then 1000 years later Tahiti are Hawaiians. A person who has lived a long time in Hawaii is a Kama'aina and can be any ethnicity. It gets confusing because the State is named after an ethnicity. A native Californian is someone born in CA. A native Hawaiian is someone 100% pure Hawaiian and most of them live on Ni'ihau, about 250 of them, the private owned island. Semantics complicate the definition.
Smh @ anyone arguing against this. Hawaiian's are a small population who's homeland has changed drastically and not to their benefit. Don't take EVERYTHING away from them.
Funny cause a lot of locals say they are Hawaiian when in fact they are just Filipino or Chinese or whatever they happen to actually be, only a small percentage of native Hawaiians exist anymore
Anyone who lives in Hawaii are nationalistically speaking Hawaiian. There Chinese Hawaiians, just like there are Italian Americans. There are Japanese Hawaiians, White Hawaiians…Chinese Americans, Native Americans.
🙄 Did Texas have an ethnic group called Texans before it became a state?! No??? Then it’s not comparable. Let me try this… Native Americans are the indigenous people of the Americas in the same way Hawaiians are the indigenous people of Hawai’i. Just because you live in America that doesn’t make you a Native American. Same with Hawai’i, just because outsiders moved here, that didn’t make them Hawaiian.
@@beatricepineda5923 You don’t get to determine that 🤭, you’re nobody. In Hawai’i, legally, only the indigenous kānaka maoli are considered Hawaiian. So too bad for you, you’re wrong, get over it. You don’t get to control indigenous peoples or ANYTHING, you don’t get to tell us who we are.

Your kind of attitude just fosters racism against white people and others who aren’t ethnically “Hawaiian”. Ethnic Hawaiians are Polynesians ; others just like the rest of the US States can be referred to socially as Hawaiian.; the legality is only referring to ethnicity not residency , birth or upbringing. I Iwas born in El Salvador, and raised in California. There are people in El Salvador, who were born there, but are Arabic in ethnicity. Likewise there are Germans etc. Nobody would dream of not calling them Salvadoran. El Salvador existed long before they arrived. That can be said of many places around the world. Why should it be different for Hawaiians? you have a very mean attitude, and are very condescending to other people . I am not calling for ethnic Hawaiians not to be called so. You need to get over your racism. May God help you.
I agree with her. You can be a citizen of Hawaii but not Hawaiian. Its not the same as California = Californian. The term "Hawaiian" speaks of ethnicity first because that was the term already in use to describe kanaka since the first people showed up and met the Hawaiians. It already had a clearly defined meaning before Hawaii became a state. Just because there was a system already in place for identifying citizenship in each state doesn't mean we get to redefine what being "Hawaiian" means. It means ancestry first. An easy solution is just to say you are a citizen of Hawaii. Bam, no need say anything more.

It’s where you were born and raised because it’s the culture that influences the person. Not skin color. For example there are Asian Americans that were born and raised in the US. Who never went to their ancestral lands. Yet, when they actually do go back, most of the time their native counterparts recognize them as Americans first. Why? Because they are influenced by American culture. People born in Hawaii are influenced by Hawaiian culture. And although they are technically Americans by statehood, many of them identify themselves as Hawaiians first before Americans. Hell, you have white people right now (Elon Musk and Charlize Theron are a few) who were born and raised in South Africa and identify as South African. Are you saying they’re Europeans because of their ancestors? Because they colonialized the nation, that makes them less South African? No. They are influenced by the culture!
Exactly..well said
@@user-sg8kq7ii3y that’s where things get complicated.

The Japan of that time, showed it’s true character when they bombed Pearl Harbor. A nation or army can first try asking “ permission” and then turn around and use force ; don’t be naïve. We have too many lessons from history to know how things can quickly turn around. Besides, other powers like greedy China or Russia surely would have carried out their plans to acquire Hawaii.
And lastly, I am a Christian . Bible clearly says that Gif is sovereign and sets up kingdoms and authorities. He can overthrow or allow the overthrow of a kingdom. He knows what is best in the end because He alone can see the future, see what’s going to happen and we can’t. Coming under the protection, and the meaning of the US, which is a super power, and granted many freedoms that those other nations don’t was the best thing that could’ve happened to Hawaii, even though there have been undesirable things along the way, and yes, if it was truly stolen, it wasn’t right. But in the end things can work out for good according to the Bible for those that trust in Jesus. Many Hawaii’s converted to the true God and accepted Christianity. There is still a bright future ahead of native Hawaiians if they would stop first and foremost surrender their lives to the Lord and stop idolizing Pele who cannot save and doesn’t even exist . Secondly they need to stop voting voting like they do and being so partisan and tribal. It is not about voting left or right. It’s better to only vote on issues : vote on bills that will better serve all the people in Hawaii then to keep supporting and voting for candidates that are corrupt or can become corrupt.
I am sorry that the native people of Hawaii can’t get past this. They are not the only people on the planet that has either been overthrown or conquered or whatever happened. Other people suffered way more and have moved on and found ways to thrive. I find some native Hawaiian’s attitudes highly ungrateful for a lot of the benefits they have in the United States. Of course this country is not perfect, but try living in other Third World countries. I am Hispanic of origin and believe me you guys know nothing of suffering, compared to what other people suffer under Socialism and other dictators.
It is time to let the past go . God has a plan for each, and every one of Hawaii’s native people if they will only let Him and let go of resentment.
