It's because wanted to be in his good graces, he thought that Harry would become the next dark lord and replace Voldemort being that he was the one who defeated him. That's why in the first book and in the first movie Draco was trying to make friends with Harry.

The only time he wasn’t was in the ministry when they fought over the prophecy and it was too dark to see properly
