  • Best Cartridges for Killing Deer 2024! Who Is The NEW #1?
    Navigating the landscape of whitetail cartridges is a walk in the park with a plethora of top-notch choices at hand. Yet, earning a fellow hunter's nod of approval can prove to be more of a high-stakes game.
    However, it's rare to find hunters testing various cartridges on multiple deer. Often, a single challenging hunt can demonize a cartridge, while repeated successful experiences with another can inadvertently elevate it to an undeserved pedestal.

    The .308 is by far the most versatile. In factory offerings, you can handle so many variables, distance, weight, bullet weight, size of target ... anything from something close and small to long distance and large and in between. It's offered in every platform from low end to ultra high end, bolt, single, lever, and AR ... what more could you possibly ask of a single caliber.

    • @Clawson_customs
      @Clawson_customs 9 месяцев назад +2

      308 suxs not as powerful as the 30-06 and so many other calibers are so much better then it that I'm amazed it hasn't disappeared yet

    • @hur1kane
      @hur1kane 9 месяцев назад +1

      @Clawson_customs really the 30-06 ... it's a great round, but it's not plentiful, it's a long action round, the .308 can take any north American game with ease and at distance, the factory loads are decent, some are great, it's everywhere and any .308 can fire 7.62x51 so there's it's versatility, and it works well in various platforms, far superior to your 30-06, so you're wrong, I know you don't know you are, but you are ... sorry and any other calibers you dare bring up, will lack in one area if not others, i.e. .. weight, range, power as in powder charge ... we're not talking paper we're talking actual targets whether hunting, defending either/or ... the .308 has
      heavy/ slower, faster/lighter and everything in between ... and if you want to further I'll say anything 300 yds and less the 7.62x39 is perfect its not sniper accurate, who cares, I can put 5 in 2in at 250yds with an sks, better with a 7.62x39 bolt ... the bs 300 blk out is 7.62x35 .. allegedly loaded for being suppressed , I don't need a suppressor, if shtf suppressors wouldn't be a concern, and 300 blk is expensive and difficult to find, 7.62x39 is again plentiful, out there, available and WORKS, in my military background, we went with what WORKS .. and those 2 rounds WORK and have for decades they're proven in field and fight, hell I even gave up my precious love for .40 s&w and went with 9mm, again plentiful, available affordable and new loads abd bullets WORK ... if it ain't broke don't fix it, Creedmoor is a competition round , it's light fast and accurate, has no weight, no mass, won't drop a heavy target at distance, I use that just as an example, like the .350 legend, it's slow very heavy and outside 250yds pretty useless (in application) they don't "WORK" ...

    • @Clawson_customs
      @Clawson_customs 9 месяцев назад +3

      @hur1kane ya the 30-06 isn't the best but it's better than 308 that's for sure I personally don't use either of them two

    Get rid of .223 and .243 and replace them with .270 & .308 and your list is fixed. Also 6.5 has an argument but I think 7mm mag or 300 mag might be in there instead of 6.5 just because of longevity.

    I realize how old i am watching this. I have experience with most of these chamberings. There's nothing in this I would dispute. As a reloader, my preference is a model 70 featherweight in 7x57. Although I hunt out west where distance is more of an issue, my 270 really shines in this environment. The old 3030 served me well in the hills of Pennsylvania where i used to live before i retired.

    I have 3 bolt action rifles (1 chambered in 7mm-08 rem. and 2 in .308 win). I love the mild recoil as I am a small frame hunter. I have also taken a deer with an AR-15 chambered in .223rem with a 55 grain frangible bullet. Which one is my favorite? Depends on where and how I am hunting!

  • @willg5013
    @willg5013 9 месяцев назад +1

    6.5 creedmore is not all that flat shooting unless you are putting it next to 30-30 or 45-70. the Creedmore does check a lot of boxes for most deer hunters so i can see why its so popular. MY top deer rounds Inside 300yards I still am liking the 6.8spc but the 6 ARC has a lot going for it both are great for youth hunters. Hunting dense woods or need strait wall then 350 legend. Hunting open plains and need some range 25-06, 6.5 PRC, 270win, 280AI, and if you still think you need more 7 Rem Mag.

  • @winstonjones7519
    @winstonjones7519 10 месяцев назад +5

    I am an old goat. And I have killed a lot of deer. I haven't killed a deer with a 6.5 Creedmoor but I have no doubt about it getting the job done. I have used a variety of different calibers over the decades. But I like the .308 Winchester. The 7mm08 Rem is a great deer killer as well. A friend of mine's whole family uses 6.5 Creedmoor and they kill a bunch of deer. I wouldn't use a .223 Remington. There are too many better choices in my opinion. It is hard to beat a .270 Winchester firing a 130 grain Nosler Partition. That combination will lay a deer flat at the impact. This video should have had two dozen different rounds on it if the intent was to give real advice.

  • @greggbell9837

Be that as it may, all of these will do the job in experienced hands. Thanks for the video.

    .356 Winchester is hard to beat. Winch made a small run then discontinued them back in the '80's. With a short, compact model 94 they hit like a ton of bricks. Good brush rifle, not intended to shoot through brush as many might think, but short barrelled for manoeuverability and ease of carry. It's a hard trade off to find something better unless you're just looking for additional range, then the 280 express would also be a good choice.

      I don't have any experience with the 280....but the .356 is a different story! I've only used it a couple of times but it hits like the hammer of Thor. My go to lever action is always the .35 Remington. And I own A LOT of lever actions, including the .356. I'm surprised the .35's aren't far more popular than they are. Maybe deer shooting, where they were shooting off a tripod or something. When I shoot a deer I want the impact and wound channel to look like I meant business. A .308 / .30-06, 7mm08 / .280 Rremington does that. They mean business. They leave a blood trail a blind man could follow. If it is even necessary.

    Killed a four year old Bull Elk with the 30/30 using 140gr monoflex from Hornady. Balistic Gel testing wound channels are on par with Federals Power Shock 150gr at 100 yards but with 300 yard capabilities.

    A list for 2023 should factor in ammo availability. Some of these cartridges are getting hard to find. So the list is invalid to start. All these rounds are
    "adequate," but many better rounds exists that are far more available.

    Hands down the 6.5 Prc in a 16.5" barrel. Recoil less than 308 and 270. Outperforms every 308 based cartiages @ 500 yds.
    It actually is better than every standard 3006 based cartiages.
    If you dont believe me ,DO the stats

    Debating over the best deer caliber is an inherent part of hunting traditions and an utmost controversial activity ! To me it's undoubtedly the .243 : low recoil, flat trajectory, high velocity, powerful enough terminal energy and perfect accuracy !

    Ive shot a LOT of different rifles over the past 30 years. For 300 yds and under, I prefer a 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC with th correct monolithic hollowpint. Almost zero recoil, will fit in an AR platform, shoots just as flat as a 6.5 Creedmore, kills just as fast as a 30-06, and is an absolute tack driver.
    If you're limited to 200 yds or less, then a 300 blackout with a 120 or 125gr bullet is hard to beat. Its not a tack driver, but its cheap to shoot and very versatile.
    Beyond 300 yds, id probably go with a 260 AI, or a 280 AI if elk is an option.
    Will a 223 kill a whitetail using the right bullet? Yes. In southern states where the deer are small, its fine. In the midwest, where mature bucks field dress over 200 lbs, its definitely less than optimal. Hunters who like it are hunting states where the deer arent much bigger than a German Sheppard.

    No 308 or 270 your just talking about rounds you like and killed deer with that be like me saying the 30-06,308,30-30,303British and 6.5creed are the best cuz i own and killed deers with them rounds, first is shot placement and a deer hunting bullet and most center fire rifles are good deer guns i would take the 223 off the list unless the shots are lil more then 100 yards or less but 223 im not taking deer hunting

    Very irresponsible putting the 223 on this list. It doesnt even make the top 50. Just because it can kill a deer doesn't mean its amongst the top choices. With good placement a 22lr can kill a deer but I'm not going to claim it's the second best round.

    Got to laugh at small calibers being deem inadequate = butt something with a lot less Ft pounds and range = bow and arrow is ok for any game including big BARES : would consider some of the larger calibers over kill on smaller game because of the amount of damage . The best caliber is the one you have!

    Best cartridges to kill deer is 308. Low recoil, lots of options, lots of guns and cheap to shot. 308 killed my first deer in 1982 and will kill my deer in 2023. No need for marketing hype by gun manufacturers.

      No, he is correct, 0.284 is 7.2 mm. 7mm = 0.275591 inches. The 270 at 0.277in is closer to 7mm than 0.284. Just old name and number marketing. Measuring lands rather than groves.
