The 8MB of internal memory is the big limitation of the etrex 10. The closer you get towards using up the minuscule 8MB of memory, the less space you will have for waypoints, track logs, geocaching GPX files, POI files, etc. Staying at or below 6-7 MB is a safe bet. The 8 MB memory was just to allow a base map. You were intended to buy a 20 or 30 if you wanted detailed maps. Just something to be aware of.
Thanks a lot for your video @SloowfoodSurvivalist I was surfing the web looking for more detailed info about the Etrex 10 and after having consulted the User Manual and other videos/blogs, I found your video and I watched it. It's really helpful. I've now fewer doubts than before... thanks again!
+Juri Bendini Thanks for your nice comment. I was honestly surprised to find out how easy it is to use real maps with etrex 10. I'm truly happy if you find my videos useful. Cheers!
thank you for this video, after searching for ages, I couldn't find any free .img map sources. Am looking for maps of India and need to install in my Garmin Etrex10. Please help with this
Great video. I want to buy this and use a map I found that's 17MB big. If I replace the existing map with this map, will there be enough space for the switch? Thanks
Actually, loading the maps is easy, but finding on the net seems more difficult - to me. I'd appreciate it if someone can give me some suggestions where I can find downloadable maps for Europe please? Thanks in advance.
So, it seems doable to put a useable map on to the device. Does the GPS sync up with the map though? It didn't seem like your location was where you actually were on the map? If all it does is load a map but doesn't show your actual location on that map why carry a device when you can just have a folded piece of paper in your pocket? I'm only asking because I just received this as a gift and it seems like I'd be better off returning it and sticking to a map and compass.
Yes, the GPS is in sync with the map, and itself. While making this video I was 170 km away from the map area, and the GPS was showing my location, therefore I had to zoom to show the map. I always carry a paper map and a compass with me just in case, but so far the maps in my GPS have worked perfectly.
Hi, Firstly, thanks for this informative video. I'm planning to go on a trekk of approximately 28km. Now the etrex-10 specification says it can store 1000 waypoints & 50 routes. So, if I turn-ON the auto track-recording at an interval of 0.01Km, will this device be able to record the complete track of 28km, or it will fail due to its restriction of limited storage capacity? I'm not sure, but in the auto track-recording mode, with the interval set as 0.01Km, will it use one of its 1000 waypoints at an interval of every 0.01Km & will run-out after recording (1000*0.01)=10Km?
According to specifications should work. Waypoints and track points are different in the unit. For tracking the capacity is 10000 points and 100 tracks. So if you enable the autosave when full on tracking, the unit should save up to 100 tracks with 10000 points every one; if you put an interval of 0.01 km the unit will save up to 100 km in every track and 10000 km total with the max 100 tracks. The charm of autosave is when a track get full the unit starts a new one right were the later got full. After your trip you can combine the tracks in one if you wish in any GPX software editor. Also even if you put the record interval every second (which is a very high rate of recording), the unit theoretically should record up to 11 and a half days of tracking.
Thank god someone figured this out. Thank you. Great unit, but the base map is absolutely useless on this thing...It doesn't even make sense the way Garmin has it, would've cost them nothing to make it expandable and the map is of no use to anyone. Actually kinda burns my ass..hundred and fifty bucks for this thing and they designed it to give you a taste of the much more pricey models.Oh well..I'm not exactly trekking Kilimanjaro
I did not use the files you are referring to. I was able to replace the files in the Garmin folder with "gmapbmap" files that I selected from the web. I am also using Garmin Base Map & Garmin Map Manager. Not sure if I helped you, best wishes.
+Cefixen Tilaa on 8 MB eli 24X48 km.
The maps I'm using are based on UTM-UPS, but based on the Garmin's vast list of usable position formats, I believe that most of the commonly used projections should work.
I have replaced the original gmapbmap.img file with my utm map, and named it gmapbmap.img. After that, I clicked my Garmin's "setup", and then "position format", and from there, I picked "UTM UPS", and after that, my map was visible on my garmin, and the position of the map was correct. I'm sorry that I cannot give better help than this. I have absolutely no idea what could be wrong with your map.
I'm afraid that I cannot help you. I found my maps, covering all of Finland, by pure googling accident. For any other countries, the availability of free maps is out of my knowledge. However, as I mentioned in the video, at least in the level of known paths, the openstreetmap.org is pretty good place to start with.
I have tried it already, but got even better results with extract.bbbike.org export area to OSM XML 7Z and then convert them using mkgmap to IMG. It's more hiking/bike oriented, more paths and less POIs and other distracting things. But still cannot find any topo maps of Poland ...
I did the the same thing in my follow up video ruclips.net/video/kR-vw0bu_FE/видео.html and the results were pretty good. If you manage to find any sources for decent topo maps outside Finland, please let me know. Good luck!
+Chris Duvenage p { margin-bottom: 0.1in; line-height: 120%; }a:lin Availability and the level of the details varies from country to country. In my case, a quick google search revealed extremely detailed maps covering the whole country. If you cannot find good maps from your area, I recommend using some less detailed maps from openstreetmap.org or BBBike.org. Instructions for those maps can be found here: ruclips.net/video/kR-vw0bu_FE/видео.html
Can you still upload geocaches when inputting a custom map? That is, if I put a map of,say, a park that has geocaches in it, the. I download the information for those geocaches, will they show up on the map I downloaded? Or does a custom map void how the geocaching functions work?
Yes, you should be able to upload geocaches to your custom maps. I'm not familiar with any of the uploading protocols for geocachers, but I have manually made some gpx files, and they are visible, and at the right location in my Garmin.
Thanks! Etrex10 has only 8 MB of space. good for about 1000 square km of detailed maps, or a lot more of openstreetmap level maps at once. Sorry, I have no clue about the Indian maps.
Google seems to have some issues with Garmin. I tried to find programs to convert google maps to garmin maps, but no success. Sorry. Openstreetmap does not seem to have too good coverage in India, but if nothing else is available, at least you can see the major roads, which is a lot better than Garmin's own base map. I'm sorry I could not help you. Good luck for your search of better sources!
Hello my friend, thanks for the video and the program. But I have a question please, which is that I had the same device and when inserted into the computer the GPS system stopped working due to the virus in my computer and the GPS device when I turned on depends on the logo only so I called a company and they gave me the verification program but without interest so what is the solution please. And God reward you
Availability of good maps varies from country to country. I'd recommend beginning with openstreetmaps and such ruclips.net/video/kR-vw0bu_FE/видео.html and when you are familiar with them, search for local map sources. Good luck!
+Young Kaniac The system works anywhere. Just rename your map file to gmapbmap. Availability of the map files varies from country to country. Do you know if the procedure will work with Mac OS?
Great video and information.
Not sure, but if Mac OS can recognize Garmin, it should work. After all, it is just drag, drop, and rename files. Good luck!
+Slowfood Survivalist I was able to load a topo via Mac OS, not identical process but the end result is the same. Thanks!
Glad you got it. Now I know where to direct possible Mac questions in the future. :) Happy trails!
