You need to first understand what being "Chinese" mean. China is more than the CCP, and it is the truth that both Mainland Chinese and Taiwanese Chinese are one family. It is their sovereign right as one nation to decide upon their future. It is better for both China and Taiwan to pursue stronger ties rather letting outside forces, like the US, to provocate tensions among them. I studied at the National Taiwan University and have lived and worked in Beijing and Shenzhen for many years. I still consider myself not yet qualified to judge either side. It is their nation, their future. We are only 'outsiders'.

Reason is simple, Taiwanese are basically Chinese for all intents and purposes culturally and lifestyle wise with a significant dose of Japanese habits but steeped in Confucian influence during the 50 years under Japanese rule. The Taiwanese dialect is actually Minnan dialect which looking across the channel that’s what the dialect is in Xiamen, the entire education system is in Mandarin as is the official national language and last I checked that is also Chinese. Prior to the rise of DPP and the changes made to the textbooks rewriting history by DPP, if you ask any North Taiwanese above the age of 50 today what are you, they will reply I’m Chinese from Taiwan, if you ask a South Taiwanese of the same age range, the half the city slickers will have the same reply while the other half will reply I’m Taiwanese and most of the non-city dwellers will reply I’m Taiwanese except for the Aborigines where you will get a whole spectrum of answers. As for me, I’m of the opinion that Taiwan should just hold a BREXIT like referendum and have this done with. Let the people living there today decide and live with the consequences should the highly unlikely Independence vote win. China should just cut economic ties with Taiwan instead of the by any means necessary position. It won’t take long for Taiwan to change their minds should the independence vote gets an unlikely win. It’s simple, in record, 60% of Taiwanese exports go to China and Hong Kong, everyone doing trading in the region knows that basically means Central and Northern Ports is booked under China, Hong Kong is the port for the Southern and Western provinces so basically China accounts for 60% of total Taiwanese exports and when calculated against Taiwan nominal GDP it’s somewhere at 35% of GDP, the Great Depression shrunk US GDP by 29% over 3 years, imagine what a 35% GDP drop in a single year would do to Taiwan.

Number one, China will get Taiwan 🇹🇼 just like they got Hong Kong Kong for those of you that had not been to Hong Kong. Hong Kong was very British very western in many ways. I could never imagine that going back to China but it did it’s theirs. It’s not ours just like Taiwan is theirs not ours I don’t like it anymore than you do. I love Hong Kongand many of us love our Taiwan neighbors, but Taiwan will be lost.
Only central, wan chai, causeway bay, mid-levels, peak, repulse bay, which are all on Hong Kong Island, are as you stated “quite British.” The rest of Hong Kong, well, it’s very Chinese, especially the Kowloon side. Have you been to New Territories, Tuen Mun, Lantau Island, Mong Kok, etc? If you look at the MTR station maps, you will notice that the Hong Kong side has very few stations compared to the Kowloon side and as someone who speaks Cantonese, goes to Hong Kong multiple times a month since the 1980s, most non-natives in Hong Kong only stay the areas I mentioned at the beginning of this comment and they think that’s the entire Hong Kong and it’s very westernised. This is almost like only knowing Upper East side of NYC and concluding that NYC is very White while ignoring Harlem, Village, Chinatown, Little Italy, Korean Town, etc exist.
I also happen to have lived a few years in Taiwan and my mandarin accent is actually Taiwanese. Half of Taiwanese want eventual reunification, more than half who voted for DPP wants status quo and the remaining loudest ones are the only ones who want independence so once you break it down, pro-independence is really the minority. And as for the status quo voters for DPP, it’s mainly because they will never vote for KMT because they either have relatives killed or incarcerated during the US backed KMT dictatorship era of Chiang Kai Shek. Reason is simple, Taiwanese are basically Chinese for all intents and purposes culturally and lifestyle wise with a significant dose of Japanese habits but steeped in Confucian influence during the 50 years under Japanese rule. The Taiwanese dialect is actually Minnan dialect which looking across the channel that’s what the dialect is in Xiamen, the entire education system is in Mandarin as is the official national language and last I checked that is also Chinese. Prior to the rise of DPP and the changes made to the textbooks rewriting history by DPP, if you ask any North Taiwanese above the age of 50 today what are you, they will reply I’m Chinese from Taiwan, if you ask a South Taiwanese of the same age range, the half the city slickers will have the same reply while the other half will reply I’m Taiwanese and most of the non-city dwellers will reply I’m Taiwanese except for the Aborigines where you will get a whole spectrum of answers.
As for me, I’m of the opinion that Taiwan should just hold a BREXIT like referendum and have this done with. Let the people living there today decide and live with the consequences should the highly unlikely Independence vote win. China should just cut economic ties with Taiwan instead of the by any means necessary position. It won’t take long for Taiwan to change their minds should the independence vote gets an unlikely win. It’s simple, in record, 60% of Taiwanese exports go to China and Hong Kong, everyone doing trading in the region knows that basically means Central and Northern Ports is booked under China, Hong Kong is the port for the Southern and Western provinces so basically China accounts for 60% of total Taiwanese exports and when calculated against Taiwan nominal GDP it’s somewhere at 35% of GDP, the Great Depression shrunk US GDP by 29% over 3 years, imagine what a 35% GDP drop in a single year would do to Taiwan.

I am Singaporean. 98% of singapore stands with china and has zero sympathy for taiwan. Same as 98% of singapore opposed the violent HK riots. Our foreign minister coached TW for years to tae the 1-country 2-system deal because "it's a good deal". Tsai said NO, repeatedly. We have zero tolerance for TW now.
That's why Singapore is literally 10X richer than TW or Oz, and our salaries are 4X higher and our standard of living is way higher too.

The upcoming South Korean president is most likely pro China. Taiwan has no other ally in the region other than the Philippines, but in their next election their new president, will mostly likely be pro China as well.
