This is one of the best edits I've seen for Astrophotography! And I love that it's all using stock tools and not having to buy extra filters or actions.
After creating a starless layer I like to go to "apply image" and use the numbers to select a 1-10 difference (subtract) and then copy and paste that as a layer. I then blend it using "linear dodge add." That method gives much greater control. Reducing the stars is as easy and pulling a curve downward on the star layer which can remove star bloat as well depending on how the curve is used. The nicest thing about using "apply image" is that is adds most of the data back to the image that starnett removed.

A couple of PS tips to add that people might not be aware of - while for the video you need to show all the steps, once you’ve finalized the steps you can record your own action and have it stop in playback where you need to adjust settings. Makes all those star reduction steps easier and quicker. You can then share or even sell those actions once you have a set. Plus, once you have a hard-won selection you like you can go to Select>Save Selection and give it a name. PS saves it an as Alpha Channel. You can then Load Selection anytime you want to reuse it or create a mask with it. No need to create a dummy layer just to save a mask or selection. Clear skies!

Man, this first technique in Photoshop was hugely helpful. Recently upgraded to an M1 MacBook Pro and StarNet++ is unfortunately unable to run on the M1 SOC (for now), and even causes PI to crash when opening until you delete StarNet++ altogether. Much appreciated!

Another way to create a star mask is to place the StarNet++ starless image over top of the regular image (in photoshop). Then change the blend mode to "difference". You'll be left with only the stars. You can use the copy merged tool and turn it into its own layer. You can then change the blend mode to whatever fits your needs.

I needed this so bad, always struggle with the stars coz they really make my image look weird. Having very less time and limited resources,I can't use starnet and i'm average at processing photos so this will help me a lot. Thanks trevor :)))))

I would love to see a technique for fixing star shapes at the edges of the frame, I use hyperstar with a non-edge C11 and have some comet shaped stars at the edges no matter how good I think my collimation is.

Literally couldn't have come at a more opportune time. Been struggling with star reduction recently and straight away can see where I've been going wrong. Quick question - does the astronomy tools actionset "make stars smaller" feather the star edges the same as doing it manually? Reason I ask is because when I run the command, I get what can best be described as dead space around the stars and it's easy to spot where they've been reduced. Just wondering if that manual feather command would get around that. Great tutorial as always 😁

StarNet++ is no longer available on the link you provide......think it is now called StarNet V2, but from what I've seen and heard it does not work well. Tried the steps in your tutorial on your website for removing stars on both Win and Mac platforms, but could not get the Content-Aware Fill dialogue box to open as your steps say by hitting the " Delete" key. Theses steps in this video may be a better choice, so going to give them a run and see with an Orion Nebula image I captures a while back. Thanks!

Does the star reduction tool in the action set work if the image is astro landscape, or does having landscape confuse whatever algorithm is at work? If so, is there one in the action set appropriate for astro landscape?
Satellites dont really ruin the whole picture. Its just a streak of light in 1 exposure out of many. When stacking the exposures later the stacking algorithms "deletes" the satellite streak and you have a normal image. Satellites are not really a problem. Light pollution is :/

To get rid of the marching ants, use CTRL + H.....then you can observe and adjust to taste much easier. Hit CTRL/H again to turn it off, and your're back to normal.
Hello everyone, Im pretty new to PS and I have 2 problems :( First when I go to Selection -> Color Range -> Highlight, I can't play with the fuziness and the range cursor. Also, when I go to Filter -> Other -> Minimum, I can't switch to a radius below 1 pixel and have an alert message telling me that the radius must be an integer value between 1 and 500.
You are using an older version of Photoshop (Photoshop CS series, or Photoshop Elements). Trevor should make it clear that he is using the newest Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud) and thus menu choices will change. Try selecting Filter | Other | Custom. Set the center value to 900. Set the outer values to -50, then play with the scaling value between 1-1000. Play with the values until you achieve a desired effect.
Taking images of space to delete objects in space? That’s interesting. Let’s hope we don’t get visited by extraterrestrials that take offense to deleting their entire system.

Have you ever tried using a Wacom tablet? They take a day or so to get used to, but are sooo much better for editing than a mouse.

Read up on back focus. That very well could be your problem. The camera is too close or too far from the telescope.

For some reason, after star reduction all the smaller stars, so most of my image, has become red
