The Briggs 450e benefits from opening the carb jet to 20 thousandths - a stripped bread wire tie can be used to check that the jet is clear and big enough. Doing this helps the motor run better and cuts down on the need for carb cleanings. 👍
When I was trying to take the bowl apart it actually broke, So I had to replace it with a different bowl that wasn't quite the same fit. I believe that's why it was still not running correctly.
I have this exact mower. It has been low idle for a few months now. Finally took apart the carb and cleaned it, put it back together, still low idle. Ugh! Grass is now 2 feet high!!!
If that's the case double check to make sure the carb isnot being flooded by gas. If that's not the problem, then just check your springs, typically they are near the gas tank on these mowers. Make sure they aren't worn out or, if you're not the first owner, someone didn't bend it all crazy. You can adjust the spring if you need to to help it idle up or down. Just bend the hook part to shorten or lengthen. It will affect the resistance and idle speed.
I got the same mower. Surging too. Mine is not the carb (cleaned twice) , not the coil, not the plug, not dirt in the fuel, not a partially sheared flywheel key, not the valve lash. I have run out of ideas.
Matt D - If you look at butterfly next to the intake and you close the butterfly you will notice engine running smoother. The model you have only have 1 butterfly. What is happening with (only) butterfly open it's letting in too much air and causing the surge. A couple of places to control this would be make sure butterfly closes completely and spring tension on the RPM governor is set so you can achieve proper RPMs. In upgrade mower models, you have 2 butterflies and the outer butterfly is the choke and controls air until engine gets hot. Please make the mistake of allowing too much gas. This small engine requires a proper air to gas ration. Too much of one versus the other will cause a surge and stall the engine.
@@TheMattYouCantWalkOn They were never messed with, maybe there is something wrong with them? When the mower starts the linkage pulls back like it should but then it moves slightly forward and back causing it to surge.
my new ebay carb is surging also. Guess I'll try replacing the mounting tube oring near the block where carb goes on and replace the primer with one it came with. Maybe try putting on the spark plug it came with. Gah crap design. these mowers are $300 new now.
I have the same engine on a new mower. New carb. New ignition coil and it still surges. Its going to the tip tomorrow. I will never buy a mower with a Briggs engine on it again. They are garbage!
B&S are pretty easy to work on. This particular model is junk. Surging is typically from the carb or the gaskets , sometimes the the breather tube, and that's about it. Sometimes it feels like no matter what you do, the problem won't resolve. On this particular one, I broke the original bottom bowl trying to pry the carb apart. New bowl was just a little bigger and it was just a mess. Not the best video, but the message of where to clean is the same.
@@TheMattYouCantWalkOn ive just had another go at fixing it and i think i have. I took all the breather tubes off and pushed them on again and i put the old carb on and it seems ok now. It was its last chance before going to the tip.
Thanks for watching. If you really want to see me spray carb cleaner in the areas I pointed out, then I'll include it next time. Other than that, it's pretty self explanatory from what I pointed out

Its the spring that controls the air flow. Need to be set right. I did this to mine today because the spring fell of and i lost all power.

Might be an air leak. Gasket or hose.

Yes I know that as well , just one of your most common factors for surging is also a dirty carburetor.
I purchased a brand new carburetor and mine is still surging and sounds like it is running too high of speed!
Sounds like the linkages maybe hooked up wrong.

@@cdos9186 it moves because of the surging, it's not causing the surging. Intake and fuel line hooked up properly?
@@TheMattYouCantWalkOn I took it on and off three times switching carburetors and made sure everything was connected and it still surges!
@@cdos9186 spray some carb fluid by the air intake and where carb attaches to engine when running. if motor revs ya got an air leak

These dinky ass mowers are so horrible. They suck at everything.
I now take a 20thou drill bit to clean out the mainjet, these run stupid lean from the factory. success rate is 99.9% of the time.
I will give that a try next time I come across one. Thanks for the tip.
How old is it
No clue now, I've since sold it. Would have to know the model number.

Useless video - you took the words out of my mouth. The steps you skip by saying you'll do this and come right back are important steps to see.

Watch my cousin's video if you need further detail. Carbs are basically the same. Thanks for watching.
