I relate to this. I easily get hurt by hate comments and know exactly why. I have low self-confidence, which is a reason why I use self-deprecating humor a lot. But I don't think this is only me. Many other Japanese have low confidence and easily get affected by harsh words even if it's only online. It makes sense to me that a lot of big Japanese RUclipsrs or Instagrammers get mental breakdown.

This was happening long before social media. I was a follower of a Japanese subculture called visual kei, one figure was Hideto Matsumoto. He accidently died on May 2, 1998, in a hotel room or something. That caused his fans to be so depressed that many had crammed his funeral service. To top it off, three to five of his fans allegedly committed suicide themselves as a result.
This is a tradition that Japan's leaders only recently decided to take seriously. The therapists are right, it does need many more people and time to get them out of this calamity.

Based on my research and observations, this problem stems primarily from the Japanese mentality of perfection and of "not standing out". Paradoxically, influencers stand out by nature, and because of the parasocial relationship the Japanese public has with its celebrities where it views them as the model for perfection; when a celebrity, regardless of the type of entertainment they do, breaks that image of perfection and stands out in a bad way (breaking the social harmony) you guys bring back the traditional form of Ijime and your own brand of ostracizing (murahachibu). It also helps that, because of your strict adherence to social conformity and social harmony and the rather conservative way of thinking, Japanese people is really emotionally repressed. And all that pressure has to go somewhere from time to time or else the individual just pops. And the way the individual pops is closely related to their level of repression, personality, and lifestyle.
Also, as a Mexican living in Mexico, I got to say that the ranking you provided about job satisfaction is not accurate at least for my country. Our work culture is not as bad as yours, but it gets really close with the added bonus of rampant corruption and insecurity.

Umm, you are aware that suicide is not unique to Japan in this day of internet and social media? South Korea has always had an issue with high suicide rates, and in the U.S. youth suicides doubled from 2008 - 2018. This has nothing to do with "repressed" Japanese culture and everything to do with the phenomenon of internet bullying/trolls and a general increase in mental health issues worldwide.

    • @CerridwenAwel
      @CerridwenAwel Год назад +1

@@cgeorge3785 I don't see anywhere in this post mentioning that suicide is unique to japan, and suicide has always been high in japan, even before social media, which only worsened the previous problems. Just like bullying and ostracizing in real life has always led to suicide, it being done online also leads to the same result. And it affects the japanese specially, because social approval is paramount there, people don't hold a ground without social support. But of course, it also happens in other places. It's just that Japanese cultural conditions make it particularly bad for them.

The whole 出る釘は打たれる; "the nail that sticks out gets hammered down" is a silent killer tbh. Maybe there are extra societal obstacles there, but still some things stay the same no matter where you at. Human is human and that we have feelings. Imagine being bullied for standing out and then carry the trauma your whole life without ever getting proper help because you’re being taught to hold back/not showing your true feelings. And if it’s true what Nobita said in 2:21 it’s amazing how many issues might get resolved or at least lessened by fixing their working culture alone.

I live in the US and am not Japanese, but I perceive the Japanese culture as a culture of high values, high standards and tradition. For anyone out there who is dealing with mental issues I encourage you to seek help. It is not a sign of weakness. Just the opposite. It takes greater courage to seek the help you need. It is difficult to separate the comments you may receive on social media as personal attacks, but you have to remember that these people are probably also dealing with issues and take it out on who they can see. As they watch you on RUclips you become a target. They feel like they know you, but they don't. Change the way you think and keep this is mind. Push away negativity. For those who leave nasty comments, block them and feel the power you have to be able to do that. Empower yourself instead of letting it take away your energy. Bless all of you.

None of what you say is realistic, but you have good intention, and I value that. Japanese culture is one of high values on the surface. Go a little deeper, you will see it's a culture where people have only obligations but no rights. The really important thing in japanese culture is the free and efficient flow of the social circuitry, the good working of the system. People really don't matter. I cite the recent Johnny Kitagawa case: people found it was more important to preserve the harmonious environment within the company than calling out the many rumours of systematic sexual abuse of the minors by the company's president (which turned out to be true). No one cares there if you're depressed, if you're being harassed, if you're being sexually abused, if you spend the night on thr streets because you have to get absolutely drunk to cope (and they find it a thing of pride that there's drunks everywhere, it's because the streets are safe and they don't mind passing out there) if you just drop dead in the middle of the street. Japan only considers "peace and harmony" on the surface of social interactions, on your choice of words and acted out gestures. No one ever dares to look at you as a human being. That's not anyone's business, so if you're suffering, that's your problem. So, who do you expect people should trust when seeking help? The system that stigmatises every deviance of the "peaceful and harmonious" ideal? The people that will shame you for exposing your feelings? No. If you can't play along with the "noble expectations" you're simply out of society, exiled. That's how it works there. And really, what help you expect people to seek? I myself deal with depression and suicidal tendencies for more than 20 years, there's really no "help". People will stuff you with drugs, have you do therapy, that really doesn't do much, sometimes just electrocute your head to make you convulse, to change your brain's chemistry for a while (it works, but causes amnesia, which sucks. It isn't nice to wake up on a bed without knowing where you are and who are those people). So, yeah. Things aren't exactly simple. And I assure you, no one gets suicidal only because they got bad comments on social media. That's just the last drop in a glass that's already full.

@@CerridwenAwel I appreciate your acknowledgement of the intentions in my comment. Obviously the subject needs more conversation as I am not familiar with conditions in Japan. I guess I am a little naïve about what is really happening. It saddens me to hear what you are reporting as my impression of Japanese culture is different. I guess that is part of the problem. Others can only make assumptions based upon what they hear. Just like here in the US, I guess every country has similar social problems. People who are drunks, drug abusers and on the streets. I have become so disenchanted with what I see here. I just want to convey a positive message with the hopes that maybe if one person gets help, it will all be worth it. I am not trying to save the world. That is impossible, but as I have also struggled with depression it took the opinion and kind words of one individual that struck a note with me and helped me cope and progress. I hope you are in a good place these days and have one way or another kept yourself well enough to survive to pursue your wants and goals in life. I wish you all the best. Thanks for sharing.🙏🙏

@@drphibesrises unfortunately the dark side of Japan only becomes apparent when you really approach the culture, and even so, many Japanese people see nothing wrong with it. Also, the problem I see with simply telling people to "get help" is that it's become a staple, it's as if it's the ultimate solution to the issue, everything will be better if you "get help", and that isn't true, unfortunately, because the "help" hardly ever helps at all. As for me. I guess I keep on trying to find goals to have, trying to believe things are worth pursuing. I will probably die without finding it.

I work at a large university here in Japan...I tell ALL my students to come see me immediately if they have thoughts of suicide, self-harm, or intent to harm others. They also come to me if they are getting harassed. We DO have resources here, but a lot of people see a stigma around accessing help and will just try to handle it themselves. As a gaijin, I can be non-judgmental and they know it and will come to me. I get them the help they need and offer a discreet shoulder to lean on. Sometimes, they just need to talk to an older adult and get reassurance.
We as adults in the Japanese village MUST raise our kids well. The health of our youth is for all society members.
Part of that is teaching kids to stay off the damned Internet. These people PUT themselves out there to get attention and make money...not realizing how vicious it can be. Having parents and elders who keep people from becoming influencers or idols is the very first and basic step to stopping this kind of thing.

I agree with the person who highlighted that one of the primary causes of the high suicide rate is probably that people aren't taught the coping skills needed to deal with difficult emotions and therefore struggle with being ability to self-regulate and maintain their own mental health. I'm a therapist so I see this really often. Where I live in the US, though, it's becoming normalized for teens to voluntarily go to therapy. Age of consent for mental health treatment is 14 in my state, so I've had quite a few teens who decided on their own to get support, scheduled their own appointments (sometimes against their parents' wishes), and they don't feel any shame about it at all. They even tell their friends that they're going to therapy and often this encourages their friends to then go to therapy, as well. I hope Japanese youth can reach that point some day too.

Every few years, the thought that the internet and social media is something that requires actual age restriction and regulation because of how addicting it is only seems less and less crazy over time.

In my own experience in both Japan and America, I can say that we Americans don’t have that same filter when it comes to arguing or confrontation with anyone. It does not matter if it’s my boss, parents, wife, friends… we speak our mind even if we are wrong. Especially true in the navy, we develop a love hate relationship with each other and most (not all) get to that thick skinned level of not caring what someone thinks of us.

I must say, yours is the first comment about this video that I can relate to. I grew up in Oz (Australia). I do feel for those being bullied but, in my youth, if we had considered nasty words to have the power of bullets, which seems to be much more common nowadays, probably a quarter of the kids at my school would have succumbed before finishing school. If you wore glasses, had a big butt, had a speech impediment, came from a foreign country or a poor family (the list goes on) you were a prime target for the most horrendous bullying - both verbal and physical. The oddity is that we had zero suicides at our schools. In fact I didn’t hear of a suicide until I was almost 30, and that wasn’t a young person. It’s true that suicide is a problem in Japan. I do wonder though if the problem was as common here in earlier generations. I doubt it!

When u were babies, u inherited sins cuz sin was passed down from our first human father, Adam. As we grow older, we sin more and our magnitude of sins grow more extreme. God doesn't allow sin in heaven.

I study both Korean and Japanese languages and South Korea definitely has the same problem. It's mind boggling to me both that people would be so mean, and that celebrities would be so affected by it that they would take their life.
There's a Korean RUclipsr who makes language videos and stopped showing her face in her videos. She thought she had to show her face but later saw that some RUclipsrs don't and they still have a large audience and I think she's much happier now. I have been struggling with depression and increased anxiety ever since the war started, then my grandparents passed away one by one, my dad got diagnosed with cancer and after years of chemotherapy passed away. Have lived in japan for 6 years, finally a Japanese acquaintance of mine helped me make an appointment with a mental counselor about an hour away by bus at 8 am a month or so later (nobody is available right away ever, but hey, trains keep running). I had a panic attack the night before, took my meds and passed out for a few hours. Didn't make it to the appointment. I called to apologize and to try and reschedule and was told that no slots are available. EVER. I was blacklisted for good. And I'm a foreigner, foreigners are treated nicely in Japan. Imagine what Japanese people go through. Of course committing a suicide is a lot easier here than actually finding help. But you also have to show everybody how horribly you are doing, otherwise nobody will take you seriously. Robbin Williams wouldn't have even gotten mental counseling here. If you dare to smile, you cannot be depressed.

I agree with Joey "Anime Man" "Trash Taste" about the negative comments directed at Japanese RUclipsrs. Those who can read Japanese might be shocked at the persistence and the thumbs up supporting negative comments - Japanese collective behavior at its worst. People say things like, you are fraudulently taking advantage of viewers by telling false stories to gain sympathy and to be monetized, have you no shame? to someone talking about how hard it is to make a living and cope with physical illness, and these comments will receive over a hundred thumbs up. And others will join in with more negative comments with hundreds of people liking the negative comments so that the entire view count becomes high just from negative comments and their approval. It also makes those who genuinely feel sorry for the RUclipsr to stay silent in case they get attacked for defending the person. I've never seen anything like it in English. It's like shark feeding frenzy to attack the RUclipsr until they delete their account.

From time to time you will have heart touching/eye opening posts, your 7+ that will leave a mark on the person. Then there are the haters who will post and attack, 3 or less. The issue is that most posts in the extremes are in the latter category. These ladies aren't ugly but those posts stick with people more than the people who post 4-6 level posts ever will.

Honestly, it's offensive they blame suicides on influencers, and never seem to look at what would lead someone to contemplate suicide in the first place. I've tried it many times, it's not just an easy "oh the cool ppl is doing it so I guess I will try". No, it comes from a place of deep despair, of no longer seeing a point to live. But of course no one there cares that so many people are so lost in such a despair. To them, people should just bottle it up and carry on as usual, no one cares you don't see a point in living after all. All that matters is that you perform your functions and look good at it.

Japanese women are the most beautiful creatures in this world. They have no reason to feel insecure. It is just that the rest of the world is jealous of their beauty. So the world has no choice but to bring these beautiful girls down, with lies just to make themselves feel better. The truth is Japanese women are on a whole another level of beauty.

I had heard about the paradox of young Japanese self-deleting whenever an idol/public figure does/or dies. That was about a decade ago though. It really is a shame that for all the great things about Japan, the country has to deal with such a flummoxing rationale in their youth.
In regards to the type of people who make these type of venomous comments: I think the sophistry of "They must have a terrible life/something wrong with them, so just ignore them and move on." is exactly that. People are keen to sweep other people and their suffering under the rug. Hare brings this up when she says "Putting the blame on her doesn't mean the issues causing this type of behaviour is being solved." Instead of just "outlawing" or "regulating" Cyberbullying, there needs to be steps taken to increase the quality of life of the people of whom are suffering to the point that lashing out online is their own release. Otherwise the problem will never truly be address and these people themselves would be put into even worse situations depending on the punishment for online harassment.
If just telling people to not be venomous/toxic was effective, the League of Legends community would be paradise. However Riot even bans these users and yet they still find ways to remain bitter and in the community.
Though what if it is disproven that abused people abuse people? What if it becomes down to a problem of anonymity, what would be the solution then? Linking our social media accounts/online presence to our Government I.D.s and such? That way their real reputation is on the line when they interact with online people. That seems like a level of Surveillance State that many people would be opposed to. Especially with no guarantee to protect others from harassment.
Anyway, that is my soliloquy about this subject. It has been a conversation in the US for as long as I can remember. I think learning to manage one's anxiety, stress and emotions in general with techniques backed by high levels of research and efficacy should be common place in schools around the world. How can people be expect to learn how to bring peace and tranquility to others when they do not know how to bring it to themselves? Almost all people are not beyond redemption, in my view, why are so many people willing to throw other humans away like they're trash if they don't act in a way that one person desires?
I deeply enjoy the fact that Hare also briefly explains a concept in Stoicism(in regards to separating the online actions of people from the *real* person) even if she may not be familiar with the philosophy. She strikes me as a wise person due to that. I wish more people would be able to know about such ideologies, philosophies and study them to help improve their lives. I feel Psychology and Philosophy go hand-in-hand.
Thank you for this powerful video on a deeply complex issue as always, Nobita. Be well and stay safe.

Given how social media in general has worsened the mental state of people, it's pretty much a given that most of us would need mental help at some point in our lives. Society certainly shouldn't stigmatize that. Heck, some people don't even talk to family about it. A level of support is so important at that point. It definitely needs to be worked on, given how uneven the approach to mental health is across cultures, especially in Asia, but also in parts of Europe.

Your life is miserable and lonely that the only thing you can do is project all your frustrations and bitterness to the people like me who has a money, famous, beautiful and successfull than you" That's the literal meaning of that tagalog phrase to those bashers and keyboards warriors. Hmmm…. I don’t think that what has to be blamed are people that say harsh things over the net, as most of them are just hurting themselves and need to vent. I think there is an underlying issue where people, society wise, think they cannot and should not rely on others for this, or they are burden others with this, including their family and close friends. Family relations I believe is the main culprit, and that is the reason why is starting to a visible issue on other countries where this was not the case (eg. The US).

I already commented something mostly unrelated to the video, but in relation to the video, I think the root of a lot of the cultural problems in Japan is a lack of honesty. I'm not sure if this was always a trait of Japan. But in the modern era, the individual citizens of Japan need to be more honest with themselves and with others if Japan is to survive.
Personally I don't particularly like the modern era. It makes problems like these and the deaths of countries far more common.

Entertainment is either being bored or trying to manage your stress and frustrations, so it's common to see bad mannered gaming communities, some of which might force you to quit the very game. In this context, the game is online presence or life itself. The basic advice would be to not let it get to you, but harassers almost certainly make sure it does, so at best you can avoid being an easy mark. Sound like Japanese platforms and channels need harsher moderation. Also, unless it's your job, it makes ZERO sense to make a profile where you get roasted, so stay anonymous.

I really like Japan and its culture, but this attitude of some Japanese, bullying people they consider “different and inferior” is something very sad in their society, in my opinion, I mean, they say, for example, that they are ashamed of expressing love because they are shy, but when it comes to expressing hate, to the point of leading their compatriots to kill themselves, (as happened with poor little Hana Kimura) there is no shame at all. In fact, when I found out about her death at the time, I was both sad and angry at the lack of sensitivity on the part of the producers of that reality show, and especially with the internet users, (or better said CRIMINALS!), who sent those nasty comments to her, until the point of her taking her own life.

Around a decade ago there was a big stir in the US Army when the data showed that some key assumptions about suicide were wrong. We used to believe that what caused suicide among Soldiers and veterans was PTSD they suffered from combat. However, the suicide rate for Soldiers who never saw combat was the same for Soldiers who did see combat. A scary implication is that it is not trauma breaking a person that drives them to suicide, but instead some people are already predisposed to suicide and it only takes a reason. A look at global suicides show that people in developed countries are significantly more likely to commit suicide than people in developing countries even though people in developed countries live more comfortable lives.
There is something wrong in advanced countries like the United States and Japan, I personally find there are people who are just spiritually broken. I have found a significant number of people just don't have real meaning in their lives. The best they have is some external validation such as family, a job, or worse, social media, that gives their life value. When those external validations collapse, the perceived value of their own life collapses with it. A person in such a state of despair has little protection against suicide and unfortunately people take their own life. The best we can do is help people who are spiritually broken, but I don't see any realistic solutions to keep people from breaking spiritually in the first place.

It is clear that formal professions are very problematic, but I think that there are enormous educational, cultural, intellectual, psychological, etc., problems in the training of children, young people and adults in today's societies! A revolution in education is extremely urgent! With massive investments in professionals, equipment, techniques, etc! And, obviously, in current labor relations! And most obviously at the initiative of central governments! What are governments for? What are politicians for? They should work for the happiness of their respective people! Why, after all, do they earn salaries from our taxes?

Then they would see they are already whole, already loved, already accepted and there is nothing to attain. No-one is ever alone. We are one with the Universe and everyone else, only don’t realise it.
