While true, the fact is that most people don’t express comprehension either by listening or reading because they read clickbait I mean headlines as if the headline reflects an unequivocal truth. On the bright side it appears that many are beginning to listen/read and think for themselves again, evaluating that information before drawing a conclusion. I base that observation partly on what is for some an uncomfortable example that includes a bipartisan departure from trends over the last 25 years or so: the results of the 2024 presidential elections. On the other hand, part of this wonky trend of people responding to headlines versus the content itself is evidence of people in general mistrusting nearly every source of information due to the shenanigans we’ve seen over the last eight or ten years- although admittedly an ‘early’ indicator of this current trend can probably be seen in the successful ‘tea party’ candidates of 2008.
@ I’m not comprehending what you are saying about the early tea party folks. They were part of the misinformation/shenanigans or they were formed because of the misinformation/shenanigans. Ok, I had to use comprehending because, but I’m honestly not sure what you are saying, please elaborate and explain.
People who have never experienced a given situation will sometimes say it's untrue. As a programmer, you would be shocked by the number of computer nerds that tell me what I have done, "can't be done". Thanks for the video Steve!

EVERY one of them is from my own customer base. That whole 'Office Space' thing where they steal the rounding? Yep that has happened to one of my customers and I had to help prove it!
I think this is true with people who play video games a lot, they tend to think they know how those lines of code they want to have the pixel action they want will interact with the code base that exists for the game. I feel like this is what causes servers to go down for hours so they can fix code interactions that show up after the server goes live again. They also don't realize that the user loads of the test server and the live ones they play on are different, hence the different behavior of a few lines of code that were just added to the game. I think that last part is true going both ways. That one is truly a two-way street. Though the user is truly a lack of behind the scenes knowledge. I guess on the games (mainly mobile and online games) front most players just see a 'working' game and think it works by 'magic', therefore believing that "eh, those lines of code I want won't hurt."
I once identified and corrected a problem one of our customers was experiencing. When I reported it to my manager and the business analyst, the business analyst said "I don't think you've thought that through." Apparently, she didn't understand the "and corrected" part.
I think it's more A case of the internet making them much louder than than otherwise. In my experience it's very rare that A person I meet IRL is A jerk.
They don't listen, and especially it what they are being told is opposed to their ideology or friends are to busy thinking/making up some comeback or someone else to blame.
Who do you think you are? What are you talking about? What other person? You're just one person and I'm just one person, so who is this other person you want to listen? (Yes, you are correct. The other problem is that we have a generation with a diminished ability to think clearly and to read, compounded by dwindling vocabularies and diminished funds of general knowledge.) Now let's see who jumps on me because they didn't read closely enough to realize that the first part of my post was a spoof.
I live in Vegas, and yes it is a law. Not State, not city, but County. The Strip is NOT in Vegas. It’s in Clark County. The ordinance was primarily passed to keep street performers from setting up shop on the bridge, but they unfortunately used a shot gun approach to it. If you’d like to look it up yourself it’s Clark County NV. Code 16.13 pedestrian flow zones.
I too live here and can confirm it is also a law/ordinance for Clark County. What I don't agree with is the absolute melodramatic reactions from people saying "I have a heart condition, I can be arrested if I stop" or some other thing that no police officer would arrest someone for. But yes, it was passed due to street performers, water/beer re-sellers, escort-pamphlet slappers, and the like. But it also has to be broad enough to deal with.... say if there were a group of ne'er-do-wells (gang members, or even as we witness elsewhere the environmental activists that like to block streets -- not to say that'll ever happen here, but it is something to think about). I haven't tried to look in to the 122 people that have been arrested and the extenuating circumstances around their arrest, but if people are being arrested for taking a photo or a health issue, then it is incumbent upon LVMPD to tell their officers there is some leeway in enforcement. Heck, we already have people running red lights, driving without plates, and the cops do nothing. The law was necessary but also the police need to show some brains in enforcing it. And in closing, I do like the law. I'm one of the few locals that go to the strip at least 3-4 times a week to get a good walk in, watch people, enjoy the scenery.
We have streets like this in my rural town in montana. Some streets the people on then never voted to join the city, so they are still part of the county. Their streets sit unplowed while the city plows work on the other streets.
I also live in Vegas and am happy the law was passed. My brother in law almost got his leg chewed off by a passed out homeless guys pitbull. It lunged at him and luckily the leash was hooked underneath the guy so the dog didn't get him but it still rattled all of us pretty badly. When my mother came to visit in 2022 a man was passed out long ways across the middle of the bridge. The police are not stationed on the bridge 24/7 hassling everyone *Move along*. They only show up there if called or patrolling. During the races it was near impossible to cross on footlet alone a wheelchair. Bystanders of the race refused and I mean that to the fullest, they refused to move. The law is/was neccessary because selfish people exist on this earth. As cynical as you are Steve I'd think youd catch onto that part pretty quickly. People also like to just setup huge tripods on the walkway and film. Not a selfy like the example you gave in the first video Steve. Over your shoulder camera equipment blocking people for hours. You got so much feedback because you failed to use rational thought. How many people use those crosswalks every day??? 120+ tickets??? Do the math. How crappy that you chose to strawman argue that the story was fake. No it's real, its just egregiously exaggerated everywhere and extremely disappointing to see you further manufactured worse case scenarios. Ohh ohh a selfie... come on.
I heard about this new law like 2 years ago from a COMPLETELY different news source; well, news sources, plural. I guess THEY must have imagined it too! 🤣🤣🤣
I watched a local new channel video TODAY about. They focused on the sign on the bridge stating the law. They also interviewed the head of the local ACLU who will be suing over the "law".
One thing I have noticed - the younger generations don't seem to choose their words carefully. I have a young (25) neighbor who stops over to visit frequently. NO idea why she enjoys hanging out with someone old enough to be her grandmother! We'll be talking, she'll say something incredibly stupid, I ask exactly what she means. She then tells a story that is so different from her original statement it's absurd. Once in a while she brings a buddy - same problem. Words have meaning! Choose your words carefully! I tell her this all the time - apparantly it hasn't stuck yet but I can always hope 😊
Mentor her. You are probably the only rock of common sense in her world and she cherishes your council and attention. I do that with young people who talk to me. They have many questions and are tired of being lied to or misled or fooled around. I/we have a great responsibility to lead by example and help them find the right path because their parents and school has failed them completely.
Also Frank: : "Some scientists claim that hydrogen because it is so plentiful is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say that there is more stupidity than hydrogen and that is the basic building block of the universe."
Oh, the internet isn't the only place they've disappeared from. It's just more apparent here because they more regularly get to demonstrate that lack by commenting to something.
To be fair, there were a *lot* of people who knew next to nothing about almost everything but loudly talked as if they were polymaths *way* before the internet existed. It's just that you'd never hear almost any of them speak unless you had the misfortune to be a family member, a co-worker, or a drinker in the same bar they frequented. And now, not only can they reach out to inflict themselves on the whole connected world, they are reinforced and emboldened by being able to find other people just as confident and ignorant as they are.
It's truly admirable that Steve makes this wonderful content out of these idiotic happenings - be it something reported in the news, be it these halfwit emails here.
I think you said he has the best channel ever?!!??!! Oh no!! How can I compete with that!! I know, tear everyone down to my level. Yeah, that'll make me feel better. On a serious note, I agree to 100% with your comment. Just wanted to try the idiot side out.
You're so right about the lamentable imprecision in the use of language. A few years ago, I was discussing a phrase in the Constitution with an acquaintance, who insisted that "no more than one per thirty-thousand" meant "exactly one per thirty-thousand". Words, as they say, have meanings.
I saw the story about the attorney returning the tv on the local news. Wal Mart even made it right with him. He was arrested and stripped searched. Over a return at Wal Mart. Insane
@deborahaumiller7391 I heard that Walmart bought Vizio & some have said that there's some advertising on a few screens but I've got an old Vizio which is supposed to be a smart TV but it's not
I watched a video of a local news affiliate interview the gentleman that this happened to! Just because it shouldn’t happen doesn’t mean it actually didn’t happen!
People will always be people. Back 3 decades ago, I took a test as part of my English high school finals. Part of it was to write a paragraph about someone we know. I wrote about a friend of my dad who was known for his art and music. The person grading marked that part way down saying they thought I made that person up. Well, apparently having a first nations name makes you imaginary. For anyone wondering, he does have a RUclips channel. He and his wife had an art gallery in a mall back when then as well, now it would not be hard to verify I had not made it up, but the web barely existed then.
People buy into social myths and are surprised by the truths that were hidden by those same social myths. When you find the truth strange, you know that you did well in school.
While I lived there, LV tried to make it illegal to be homeless inside city limits. The law was struck down only after passing. After that, why would you believe they wouldn't pass a law like this? LV has less human empathy than any other city I have lived in.
So 1. Don’t believe the attorney who said it happened to him. 2. Don’t believe the news outlet that said it happened. And 3. don’t believe Walmart, who basically said it happened by apologizing for it don’t believe them either! but believe guy who says he has a friend ? Really people really????
This phenomenon predates social media. Almost 40 years ago I said to a coworker, “One of the many causes of the fall of the Roman Empire-“ and he started yelling at me that it was stupid to think that there was only one cause for the fall of the Roman Empire.
Just to muddy the waters more, I read a report that RUclips will soon use AI bots to post in the comments of channels. True or not I don't know. If true it could be their attempt to add "drama" and try to manipulate the public. We shall see what we shall see.
@@TesseraktGaming In a century, Carlin may be considered more of a philosopher. Decades ago, we laughed at Roseanne Roseannadanna saying "It's always something", but today, I think that may be one of the finest bits of wisdom I ever learned from TV. I've even gotten my mother, who didn't watch the show, to wear a shirt with Gilda and that phrase on it. To go with what Carlin said, we also have Carlo Cipolla's "The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity".

I've been following you for almost a year. I know most of the stories before you finish telling them. It's partly because I keep up with the news, and partly because I'm a paralegal, and I have come across some of these stories myself. I can vouch for you, Steve! For whatever that's worth.😀
Happy New Year Steve and to all of your subscribers! I saw the man who was arrested for stealing a walmart t.v. interviewed - the man stated it was still under warranty when he returned it and was arrested as he left with the replacement. The video can be found on youtube. Incredible the 'humans' who are wasting your time with their ignorance. If someone thinks the story is incorrect, then they should post a link proving they're right.
You are exactly right. What happens all the time is people read a headline and go straight to the comments and start their ranting. My guess is they live in Moms basement and have zero social skills and creating arguments is their only source of getting perceived social interaction. Saying something to create arguments is the only way to trigger responses and make them feel relevant. Not what im doing, just stating it the only way i can, hard to candy coat it. Forgot to say, its kinda unfair to have a battle of wits with someone clearly unarmed. lol
13:45 that has to be one of the best faces I’ve seen Steve make in a long time. It screams “are you f-in serious?” It’s so appropriately condescending and I love it
That is the problem with our society, we have lost faith in everything including the truth. So many I know just can't believe anything that doesn't agree with their deeply held beliefs. It is ruining our society.
It’s not that it that there are so many fake videos and stories now and with AI coming in it’s going to get worse. People with pessimistic personalities may go overboard but it is hard to know sometimes.
Two things - People on current day net are losing their minds, and feel the need to share their insanity. And, it made me think of a few of my trips to Joanne's (craft/fabric store). We're mil, so we've been to them all over the country. On at least three (possibly more) occasions, I asked about getting a whole bolt, and they did the purchase differently, all stating "This is how every store does it" when clearly it isn't, because I had to ask how their does it. Just because that's how your store does it, doesn't mean the rest of the country follows.
I enjoy your videos. I find an entertaining and enlightening. I would never dream of questioning your stories or your opinions on your stories. Some people just have to be right you know? But in his case they aren’t. Keep em coming.
I love this rebuttal ???? I experience this frequently online because people's eyes betray them as much as their ears and instead of verifying they go with their "first take" which then leads to a famous comedian quote - "you can't cure stupid" conversations - smh
I recently saw the video featuring the retired consumer attorney who was accused of taking a replacement TV. The incident highlights poor communication between the store's managers. One manager said it was okay but another manager contradicted them stating that if the attorney left the store with the TV they would be arrested. The email you received which claimed their friend works there said it doesn't happen that way. Maybe it hasn't happened at their store but obviously it has happened; otherwise there wouldn't have been an interview with the attorney.
You will never satisfy all the people all the time.. This is funny.. Your videos are great.. Some folks just dont get it.. either they're watching lazily.. (is that a word?) Or they are only hearing what they want to hear. You're wasting your breathe trying to "clarify" . You're golden man.. just keep on keep'n on.. Love the videos!
I have actually worked at Wal-Mart ( not in electronic) but more importantly I have worked retail for decades and as a manager. 1. Store brands bring in the biggest profit margins and as such they will push those brands for sale hard . The reverse is also true , if 1 gets accidentally destroyed it isn't as expensive to replace as a name brand . 2. Most managers will bend over backwards to make a customer happy , because 1 angry customer that had a bad experience will easily tell everyone they know , post it on x , Facebook, RUclips and tiktok. While if you give them a good experience it is harder to get them do the same thing . The story about the TV makes perfect sense. The guy was still barely under warranty, it was a store brand . Now the reason this is even a story is because the one maneger sent the cops after a customer and sadly that makes perfect sense too. That is clearly a store of people not communicating with each other.
Steve! I ordered some groceries to be delivered from Walmart and it included mayonnaise. Everything came but the mayonnaise. Several days later, that jar of mayo came in my mail !!! Walmart MAILED ME a plastic jar of mayo!!!😢😐🥺😥😥😥 Of course it was broken open and spilled in the packaging. Can you believe that? Mailed it to me! That was last summer. It gets 115°F here. Mailed it. I still am dumbfounded by that....😮😊😢
Steve, your “listening analysis” fits my personal findings (anecdotal) about emails; never ask more than one question because you’ll only get the first question answered! If I forget my own rule it usually gets reconfirmed.
Early in my career, I was a CPA/auditor, and I worked on corporate clients and financial funds. One of those funds was a scam and it was widely reported on the news and newspapers. I had done some work on the fund and was familiar with their numbers. The numbers reported by the media were completely made up. I don't think the reporters just maliciously invented numbers, but their source was giving them bad information. It can happen, but in your case the actual attorney affected commented on your video and Walmart issued a statement.
I agree -- sources are important. I spent a couple days tracking a fake story that was being discussed on a lot of web sites. The people repeating it could not give me the original source but were able to tell me where they saw it. When I got done, all of the trails led back to one person who was selling a competing product!
I have lived with the frustration of trying to have conversations with people who don't listen to any of the extremely important words that unfortunately are small and apparently unnecessary in there minds. Including all your examples and so many more. As a lawyer you clearly understand that leaving out a qualifying or clarifying word is extremely important to the entire sentence or document. They seem to latch onto a theme and fill in as they think they are completing your sentence. And they are too lazy to listen with intent to understand you. I consider it laziness on their part.
Some people just don't understand a phrase like "one of the worst." That's my wife. When I say "nearly everyone" she comes back and says 'not everyone,' when I say "almost always" she comes back and says, "Not always," It gets so frustrating, confusing a statement excluding the absolute with an absolute statement.
P.S. Love your channel. We're close in age and both grew up in the city.. Your intellect and education means we'd be fast friends. I always find your newest post to see what's the new crazy you've found lol.
Steve, are we really expecting people to display information literacy? Next thing you know we'll be asking them to understand what nouns are. It's just too high a bar to set. /s Keep up the great work. My day is made brighter whenever I see you've posted a video.
It wouldn't surprise me if they did arrest people for stopping even for a second using this law. I don't know if anyone here lived in or near Allentown Pennsylvania during the 90s the police chief was ordering the police to arrest and or hand out loitering tickets on Hamilton St after most business hours, if you were walking alone or with friends and say stop to window shop at a store like the Army and Navy or tied a shoe you got a ticket ASAP if you question the cop you could get arrested! Hamilton St back then was a Cruising Circuit people hung out looking at cars and socializing, very few issues. They changed one way street directiona to make it difficult. Put up no cruising signs. The town of Potstown was also a hang out that that tried to make it illegal to be there but fortunately Hot Rod magazine highered lawyers to fight it and won. Allentown wasn't so Lucky 😮 it became gang riddled when the cruisers gave up 😢😢. So yeah i can see this happening in Vegas.. I don't live in Pennsylvania partly because of stuff like that , i moved back to my Roots in Michigan the UP to be exact. No problems like that up here.😊
One thing I’ll note is some places report misdemeanor citations as arrests. At my old department you can cite or arrest on a misdemeanor and the reporting is the same either way. I’m not saying that’s what is happening here, I have no idea. But something to think about.
the thing is Steve, a lot of people are unhappy in there life, so they have to try to make you unhappy, I just don't understand. You are a lawyer, Im sure you look into the stories that you talk about. Thank you for the work you do, I believe it!!!
I would argue that the no loitering on pass-overs is good for tourism. It gives the LVPD authority to arrest hooligans who refuse to "move on" and it deters street performers and beggars from cluttering the walkway and harassing tourists. Also, many street performers are wearing disgusting get-ups and many tourists are not comfortable getting that close to them. I fully support the law.
Welcome to the post-truth era where an armchair researcher's opinion is just as valid as an expert who has dedicated their life to researching the topic.
Steve I enjoy your stories. Some people, not everyone are doubting Thomas's, my advice to them is put your attenation on things they believe, if there is anything!
There are a lot of bots that use chat gpt to create comments. Like: Argue againts (video name)(video description), or Answer (Top comment) with it being fake news, and so on, so no need to get angry with dumb comments.
" So stupid it can't be real" - lost my coffee on that one. (sigh) Yeah, "Hold my beer" as well as the "Darwin awards" or spend five min on "The Jerry springer show" the worst place to see this is outside Juvenile and domestic court. People can get really stupid during a divorce or other domestic conflict.
It might be comprehension, or it could be that we've developed the attention span of a gnat and many aren't capable of focusing on anything more than a couple of minutes. Screens are ruining our brains.
Just realized this isn’t the Steve Lehto youtube channel I’m subscribed to, odd detail that I just remedied. Anyway, thanks for all the content and explaining interesting current events that involve the law to a layman like myself. Finding your channel on YT a few years back was an unexpected pleasure as I always enjoyed your work on Jalopnik years ago. The internet is a strange space. A woman (maybe? you can be whatever you want on the internet) wrote me what felt like a dissertation on why and how Alex Jones is actually the deceased comedian Bill Hicks. Just happened this morning. It’s like a carnival freak show and you don’t have to pay for a ticket. Arguing with anyone on here is like playing chess with a rooster. They kick over all the pieces and poop all over the board then crow about it. This is a good reminder for me to not use the comment so much. I get chatty now and then and it just invites the worst kind of responses. Thanks for all your work! The humorous incites into the law add a lot of context to a lot of current events/news, and it has been very appreciated!
When dealing with these people try this, ask them if the world is flat? This could help clear up where these people are coming from and how clever there friends are.
I recently saw a local TV reporter interview of the attorney who said he was warned twice by Walmart employees that if he walked out of the store with the new TV, he would be arrested. And he then said that he was shocked when the police came to his door to arrest him. He never said in this particular interview that anyone at the store told him he could take the TV. He also did not mention that he had called the factory beforehand. I thought he couldn't be a very good attorney.
@@ChillyJack Yes, although it seem silly that the report would edit out the part about the factory telling him to just go exchange it. My assessment had to do with him being "shocked" after being told exactly what would happen.

Kelo is definitely up there. It establishes that eminent domain can be used by Corporations and Developers when it should only be by government for the public good. Such a ruling can jeopardize people's homes if a developer decides he wants to build in your neighborhood. Negotiating the purchase of your home won't be necessary when they can just take it by eminent domain at a fraction of its value.
I lived in Vegas, I had to always push, and actually get harassed to get across those pedestrian bridges, there is nothing wrong with the law. No old person has been harassed by police because they took a rest. Period
Steve, I have mentioned this before but my best friend listens, thinks, speaks and acts in incomplete sentences. Let that sink in and then realize he is the same type of person who would call you out on "fake" stories. My god, when he calls and I see his name pop up on my caller ID, if there is any one around that know me and see's the pained expression appear on my face they say "so and so is calling isn't he"!! I literally have had to stop my friend and say, "wait a moment, I need to break out my legal pad and take notes! I think it's more A case of the internet making them much louder than than otherwise. In my experience it's very rare that A person I meet IRL is A jerk.
@@ingemarolson3240 Yes, that is more accurate wording, and what I really meant. lol
It seems like people don't really listen, it's as though they are too busy thinking about what they want to say & never really hear the other person
They don't listen, and especially it what they are being told is opposed to their ideology or friends are to busy thinking/making up some comeback or someone else to blame.
That's all of both broadcast and cable TV "news" shows, and shows like The View
Just shout over anyone stating facts you don't want to hear.
I 100% agree, most people are great listeners.
@ Too clever by half…..
I appreciate your honesty and venting. They are my favorites .
Have you seen how strong weed is today? Have you seen the way kids are smoking it like it was 70s schwag?
Mentor her. You are probably the only rock of common sense in her world and she cherishes your council and attention. I do that with young people who talk to me. They have many questions and are tired of being lied to or misled or fooled around. I/we have a great responsibility to lead by example and help them find the right path because their parents and school has failed them completely.
Hard to say, is it "Words have meaning," or "They're looking for plausible deniability"
More often than not, I've found it to be the second.
The younger generations are getting older all the time, just not smarter

'Attention to detail' (along with) 'Common Sense' & 'reading/auditory comprehension' have disappeared from society's occupants of the internet.
Because of the internet and social media.
AWESOME, I LOVE the tid -bits of Sarcasm & Humor. Truely "ONE" of the Best channels on the web.

Insane
Yes, like you said, I actually saw the man tell the story about getting arrested while leaving the Walmart, he was in fact a lawyer too
You know after going through that, the attorney should get a new screen every month.
He was not strip searched, stop making up nonsense.
This Walmart event makes me reconsider that Wally World TV I was eyeballing...😂😂😂

This is a perfect example of the saying "Some people just want to watch the world burn."
A very sad reality.
Innovative legal arguement; the “My Friend works at Wal-Mart.” It is the new Chewbacca Defense
It's an evolution of "my uncle works at Nintendo"
These days truth is often stranger than fiction so people prefer believing the fiction over the truth.
They want their own set of facts.
A quote from comedian Ron White applies to these people, “you can’t fix stupid”.

Two things -
People on current day net are losing their minds, and feel the need to share their insanity.
Greetings from Kalamazoo MI. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.

(is that a word?) Exactly... well said.
Mailed it. I still am dumbfounded by that....😮😊😢
Unopened jars of mayo don't require refrigeration. The rough treatment of mailed packages, that's a different story.

Also, Bama Alum here. Bama definitely lost. Unless that was fake news. Hmmmmm.
The scary thing, is that these people vote !
As evidenced by the most recent election!
When I got done, all of the trails led back to one person who was selling a competing product!
nice DENCHERS !🤣 THEY FIT SO WELL (great show!)
People want the world to make sense & dislike anything that doesn't fit.
I remember those days....

This video was definitely fun to watch. Great start, have another good year.
It wouldn't surprise me if they did arrest people for stopping even for a second using this law. I don't know if anyone here lived in or near Allentown Pennsylvania during the 90s the police chief was ordering the police to arrest and or hand out loitering tickets on Hamilton St after most business hours, if you were walking alone or with friends and say stop to window shop at a store like the
Army and Navy or tied a shoe you got a ticket ASAP if you question the cop you could get arrested!
