    Growing up as a kid, Nabokov, Khabibulin and yes, Jose Theodore were some of my favourite goalies. Nabokov was an absolute legend for SJ. Best goalie of their franchise that I can think of. At least for the longest amount of time.

      Um, he spent 10 years in Teal, demanded too much, got benched in favor of Toskala, and NEVER appeared in the Stanley Cup Final... Jones did that in just 1 year. Sure he fell off badly post 2018, but... Jones still got the Sharks to within 2 wins of a Cup. Had it been Nabokov, Sharks would have been swept.

    As a longtime Sharks fan we had our Sharks season tickets from 1997 to 2004 so I had the pleasure of watching Nabby play with several other of my all time favorite Sharks like Owen Nolan, Brian Marchment and Vincent Damphouse etc. I know its been a longtime but if I remember right Nabby's first career start was a 0-0 tie against the great Patrick Roy. Evgeny Nabokov is definitely one of my top 10 Sharks players of all time!

  • @drew10981

    Nabby was my favorite player on the Sharks for his entire career, and still is to this day. Interesting elements of note: his first start in the NHL ended in a 0-0 tie against the Colorado Avs and Patrick Roy. He also scored a goal in 2002, which was the first goalie PPG in NHL history. His 353 career wins ranks 4th for non North American goalies just behind Pekka Rinne's 369, and just ahead of Bobrovsky's 336 wins. His time in the KHL was not a pleasant experience as his wife and young son were not taking to Russia very well so they returned home to San Jose just 3 weeks into the season. Within a month of their departure from Russia, Nabokov missed them too much and left the KHL to return to the US and the NHL. Currently he is the goaltending coach for the Sharks organization working with the goalies in both the NHL & AHL. He's also been a key contributor regarding what young goalies to go after.

    I was about to go to sleep after reading all my Sharks news for the day, and saw this pop up on my recommended. Thank you for everything you do Shannon, love the attention to detail in your work especially during the off season. Nabby is my favorite goalie of all time. He was the best in net to play in San Jose, one of the best glove hands of his era, and was one of the last (along with Broduer) to still have the stand up style as part of his game mixed with butterfly. Nabby is a legend in San Jose, and we haven't had a goalie like him since..Can't believe at one point we had Nabokov/Kiprusoff/Toskala considering my Sharks have not drafted a starting goalie since the 90's...Except Thomas Greiss must be mentioned as he has made a very good career for himself still playing with over 300 games to his name and being kind of a 1B/Tandem goalie who has always put up good numbers.
    Thank you for bringing me back to the golden era of Sharks Hockey...when there was still glow in my eyes as a Sharks fan. All those "Maybe next season" years and look at us now...We're now the San Jose Cap Hell! Where we sign 8 year contracts that Anchor us in the land of too good to be bad, and too bad to be good lol

    • @kennyr2744
      @kennyr2744 2 года назад +1

      Totally agree. Although Greiss will not be remembered as one of the great NHL goalies, he's a solid netminder who has had a nice career as a reliable back-up/1B. He's the latest good goaltender drafted by the Sharks, which is unfortunate considering (as you mentioned) they drafted Nabokov/Kiprusoff/Toskala not too long before him. Glad to see someone else who recognizes his value.

Greiss just left Detroit and signed with the Blues this summer, so great for him.

      GAA is really unreliable to measure a goalie's season. I have seen goalies with a GAA under 2.25 who didn't have a great season and goalies who posted a 3.5+ GAA who had a great year. Save percentage is a very good measure of which goalies had a good season. Quality starts are a good one as well.

    The crazy good goalie stats early in this era, would like to acknowledge, the left wing lock..

    Good goalie on some good teams in San Jose after they started getting good, but never quite got over the hump in the playoffs.

    Sometimes it feels like the Sharks are trying to find another Nabokov. Someone who can play 70+ Games in a season in an era where tandems are becoming more common and goalies are more prone to injury due to the skill creep across all positions. I'm not sure if they'll ever find their star goalie, as it seems like they keep overplaying the ones they have had.

      Nabby's self-interest in starting 70+ games damaged the Sharks org's perceptions of a "starting goaltender". That was how they overworked Niemi, then overworked Jones, and clearly overworked Reimer this past season (or last season?).

    You should have also added the stat of 1 goal because he did score an empty netter
