At first I thought $6 was to much but considering how much it costs to make the level and to get Mr Reeves himself must be a lot so it's probably fair.
Al you had to so was buy the deluxe edition if you alr have the standard. You get all the deluxe editions things like terios books and song tracks and you get the movie doc but If you only want the movie dlc then yea I get it.
Honestly I felt like Radical Highway, Act 2 was heavily trying to appeal to the idea of Westopolis. It has the red skies, that whole grungy look you discussed, a giant Black Arms monster to chase down, and it has all those sky diving sections. Radical Highway, Act 2 really leans into the idea of Westopolis without actually being Westopolis.
I am HOPING that they do more stage DLC for Shadow Gens like this in the future. It would be cool if they supported this game more next year like they did with Frontiers.
I like the "two Shadows in Tokyo" theory. Movie Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Shadow have moved their fight elsewhere just before Game Shadow shows up. This is the form he has to take in this dimension, and GUN just starts going after him because he looks like Movie Shadow. The carnage has already happened in the level before Game Shadow shows up.
I’m a little split on this. On one hand, I absolutely love the DLC. It’s one of the best levels in the game just for the pure spectacle. It also shows how good of a job. The level designers are doing, since they pretty much had to make a level from scratch. Yes it’s loosely based off of the upcoming movie, but unlike every other zone where they could at least steal some ideas from the other games, this time they had to make something of their own. (Also the same minor point, but I like that they actually bothered to give a lore reason for this to happen. It’s nothing particularly groundbreaking, but just the fact that even bothered is pretty neat.) But on the other hand, given the fact that if you don’t already have the digital deluxe, this DLC is gonna cost you roughly $6 (US) I wish there was a little bit more. For comparison episode, shadow back in Sonic Forces, despite how lackluster that DLC is, was completely free and gave you access to three new levels (even if they were just tweaked versions from the base game) and let you play as Shadow in most of sonic’s level levels. Don’t get me wrong this Tokyo level is leagues better than even the best Sonic Forces has to offer, but you only get one level with two additional challenges. I think if there was even just one more challenge act, it would’ve made the bundle that little bit more worth it. (I would’ve especially loved it if there was a Movie Sonic Boss Fight, based off of their one-sided battle in the first trailer). But despite thinking the DLC is a bit too short, I can’t deny that I absolutely loved this level and I’m happy that it even exists at all. I would give this DLC a solid 8/10. I suppose if my only issue with it is that I wish there was more of it, that’s probably a good sign.
A boss fight against movie Sonic would have been cool but then they would have had to bring in Ben Schwartz to voice movie Sonic and who knows how much that would jacked up the production costs, if nothing else I would have taken maybe a little easter egg, maybe seeing movie Team Sonic running through the city somewhere in the background as streaks of blue, yellow & red
You know what ELSE would have addressed the magnetic walls issue? Making an actual physics-based character controller. That's what Sonic Team doesn't seem to understand yet. Making a character controller that actually responds to physics is a TIME INVESTMENT because it means that they don't have to add additional scripted triggers and code to the levels in order to make FAKE physics later. It would just work with the level geometry. The level designers would simply be free to create the level geometry and then Sonic/Shadow/Whoever would behave exactly how the player would expect them to because the underlying physics systems would simply... WORK.
Not too surprised the next Sonic game's gonna be a spinoff. We've gotten a ton of peak content in these last three years. I wouldn't be opposed to taking a break from that for something more low-key.
Not gonna lie and I may be the only one, but I really like the jump ball animation of movie shadow, something about that furball looks really nice to me
12:41 this is my theory on it. When shadow traveled to this pocket of space time from the movie universe, he effectively overwrote his movie counterpart. That’s at least how I explain a way a bunch of things in generations, like why we don’t see the Adventure Era Super Sonic in Perfect Chaos’s boss fight. When modern sonic shows up fills in the role past self would’ve before Eggman started screwing with time and space. Same could be Shadow. However, that’s just my own personal headcanon theory to explain away the confusing nature of white space.
The skin and voice were likely sold to be used in the dlc as a package deal. I'm sure it's a contractual/licensing thing. More people than Sega are involved at this point with the movie.
There’s some more info on Sonic Racing Crossworlds. Apparently the game will have “the iconic characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog universe” and “a distinct racing mechanic that promises to transport Sonic racing fans into a new dimension." Also Hardlight is developing this.
While the DLC level is short, I think the cinematics and the Westopolis remix make up for it. About the Movie Shadow skin, though, in earlier trailers the DLC was listed as "Additonal level and skin for Shadow" which made me believe it would be like Terios. I'm still really happy with what we got, and it's super cool that Keanu voiced Shadow in the game. It seems he's really enjoying the role. Regarding the new racing game, I think we might get some stuff related to the DC crossover. It seems like a great oppurtunity if they really are going to do a multiverse thing. I think it would be awesome if they brang in the alternate versions of the characters from Secret Rings and Black Knight, like Sonic Forces Speed Battle, which also has Prime characters and Movie characters. That ties into your point about how the characters don't need to interact with each other as it's only a racing game, which they don't do in the mobile games with multiple skins. The mobile games even have Pac Man and the godamn Angry Birds. There will probably be some sort of story though, so I'm interested to see how that's handled.
I really hope we eventually get an update that lets us use Movie Shadow in the rest of the game. I mean yeah, there's always mods, but as someone who currently doesn't own the game on PC, I really hope they can go that extra mile to get the skin to work everywhere Terios does.
I kinda wish this level was in a multiverse pack, like if it had included others universes like Boom. Tokyo was a fun level, but it's only got one act, two challenges, and six collectables when an average level has two acts (with Doom Wing routes), six challenges, and nine collectables. I will say, Shadow's movie model makes me want to see the mainline models with detailed quills, I love how he looks.
Shame how short it was, but I loved Tokyo Act1. Level design is solid, music is amazing and the mid section transition is god tier. It does go on a bit but the animation is so good I enjoy even on the 10th playthough
i'm excited for crossworlds because team sonic racing had one of the greatest soundtracks in sonic history, and if crossworlds' is anything like TSR's, we're gonna get potentially another one of the best sonic soundtracks ever.
Okay I have some positive and negative thoughts on this DLC Positive: Level Design Is incredible I love all the alternate routes you can take, Wall running mechanics are utilized perfectly in the level better than what kingdom valley did, the Westopolis remix goes hard, Keanu Reeves nailed the voice acting, animations are through the roof, and the challenge acts are hard but fun! Negatives: There is no Act 2, there is no Movie Sonic Boss Fight and you can’t play as movie Shadow in the base game Over all for 6 dollars it’s worth getting this DLC cause it’s one of the best levels in the game!
Finally, someone else who wants to bring 3D to classic Sonic, it'd be the perfect way to evolve the formula considering how dull it's becoming. It should play something like GT, Encore or Utopia imo.
it is possible they make him playable in other stages in the future changes like this to animation are not as simple as they look, and being companies they have schedules, budgets, management they need to deal with, so it's not simply open in blender and copy paste a rig but they can still take time after this release to make it happen for a future game patch, maybe the only compromise would be that they most likely keep og shadow's va, specially because ingame cutscenes like with mephiles would need to be re-recorded for lip sync, or if they use keanu, might make his cutscenes with his skin silent, but that might be strange it's doable but it won't be perfect, we can live with that
I mean if game Shadow turns into movie Shadow in the movie universe canonically, down to the voice, then I think that would work for movie Shadow in the game universe so Kirk’s voice on movie Shadow wouldn’t be too too weird.
Even though I love this DLC I also do think there should've been a movie level/skin for Sonic as well but I do understand that they wanted to focus more on Shadow and it would cost a bit more money who knows maybe Sonic will get his movie DLC pack in the future but I doubt it.
Honestly I think the DLC was good, but lackluster. The level is really short with only about a minute and 40 seconds of gameplay on my best run which is 2:33, but there was no Act 2, and we can’t use Movie Shadow in the main game despite it being advertised as if we could way before the DLC was revealed. If the level was longer to warrant 50 seconds of gameplay, then I wouldn’t be complaining about the length. The issue of the Shadow skin being locked to Tokyo is an issue that knowing SEGA won’t be fixed any time soon tho.
there's one thing that botheres me with movie shadow's design he has on more big quill on his back and it doesn't feel right like everything else is awesome about his design but this spike bothers the hell out of me
Hmm. I can understand the mouth issue, but also, I think that there are better ways to solve that issue. If there were general issues that prevented it from being used in the game, I'd rather they say why rather than just speculation. But also if it's just having issues with the mouth in cutscenes, just don't have it appear in cutscenes. Might just be me, but I beat Sonic Generations with the SA skin, which doesn't work in cutscenes, and I didn't mind. Having skins in cutscenes is an extra in my eyes. I do hope that we get more DLC in the future though.
I got it with the digital preorder. " NOT DIGITAL" yes I donked getting digital, but apparently it came with a sa1 sonic skin and terios skin. I played it last night, and it was fun. Granted, it has it's flaws, but flaws or not, it was worth it.
It really needed a second act. Just have the second act be entirely 2D and not have the cinematic scenes like all of the other levels' second acts (except for Radical Highway of course).
Skips are better for more vertical and compact level design like SA1 and 06. Games with more stretched out and hallway level design are better off with alternate paths.
It is weird that there is no option for movie shadow as a skin. It is not that hard to program that in. Also, the reaction time required for some stuff is a bit more unforgiving which very slightly gave me Frontiers Final Horizon flashbacks. Here. Though, the difficulty spike is not as ridiculous.
The issue is the animations, mainly in the face and quills, you can't simply take animations from a different head rig and expect it to magically work, the animations for the in-level cutscenes would have to be redone for the skin
4:42 Okay, this leads to a different gripe I wanted to point out. Back in the day, they used to draw/animate these charater's mouth to the side mainly cuz it was a 2D flat setting, makes sense. But it's high time we moved on from that. Even the Adventure games gave all the characters centered mouth, including Shadow. But after that, Unleahsed, Generations, Forces and even Frontiers for some reason decided to give Sonic and Shadow the side mouth which makes absolutely no sense. Even the animated cartoons like Boom or Prime gave him a centered mouth. Why are we still doing side mouths to this day? It's completely pointless and honestly looks weird. Center everyone's mouths, Sega. It's time you moved on from this weird design choice.
It makes sense people will mod the movie shadow skin into the game, but it sucks that the mods would only be available for pc only. Console players will just have to cope with the skin limitations.
