    As I hear you it sounds like making the sound mono would avoid/fix phase cancellation, but if you have two sinewaves, invert one of them and make them both mono, they still are not hearable because of 100% phase cancellation right? So is that example the other 10%? :P

    Izotope's Imager works great, too. I always make those low, rumbling frequencies nearly mono by default during mixdown. Really cleans up the mix in general, especially if you have phasing issues.

    Hey buddy I really enjoy your videos, they are great. I just got done, I've been doing this massive endeavor, trying to legitimately understand the physics of music. So
    To return the favor and pass on a little bit of knowledge I just received today, and I owe you because I've learned a lot from you my friend, but a correlation meter in the center isn't out of phase apparently, but it is a sign that you just have a wide mix. And I guess the science behind that makes sense because if it's in absolute phase it's all the way to plus one, and negative one is 180degrees it's other participant. And if you look at two waves, a blown up form, when they're out of phase, the peaks and valleys of the sine waves are running opposite so they constantly are canceling each other out.
    The way this gentleman had explained it to me was if you're in one wave is in phase you're in the plus one section, and the other participant is out of phase being a negative one, they mathematically equal zero. Which is the absolute sound that you hear if you're out of phase 180°. I just learned all this in the last four hours more like 4 weeks. But it just clicked
    If you have one way form that's plus one and one that is zero in the middle of the correlation meter then you have a strong propensity for strongly being in phase. But if they're both in perfect phase, plus one, then you have the ultimate of state of being perfectly in phase. And if you are reading zero centerline, it is said that your mix is a really wide mix but still in phase. Thanks for putting up with my gabiness. don't think that I typed all this out, I do voice recognition software to make these really long messages, and hope I didn't put a bunch of blubber down without checking I'm going to check. Have a great day my friend God bless you

      And to add a butt cover because I am by far the top of the food chain in the brain game. This is only a month of really studying phase so if I am not accurate, please learn me. Pretty please.
      one of the most terrible things that people do is slam another one for being wrong, and my intention isn't to be some arrogant smart shot here. My intention is to pass on what I've been passed. And as music goes, for every rule, there is the trump card, being how does it sounds. There's hundreds if not thousands of ways to approach a mix and have a nice sounding final mix. I come from the world of being alive audio engineer, and have been for the last 30 years. I give major props to all of the studio engineers out there that have endured it for a long time because it's a lot more in-depth, it's permanent.
      Anyways here I go rambling on again. God bless you all send, me a message here if you want to swap brains. I have dedicated my life to music, and I find myself studying more today because an error in mix doesn't go away when the party stops... It is just more obvious.

    hey sadowick can you please make a tutoiral how to get the psytrance kick and bass fitt nice tougether. i tried evrything nothing works. after 5 years of music production still can't figour it out. i don't know is it because i don't have a master studio i really don't know. i think i watched every single tutorial on youtube and still it doesn't help. i mean it sounds decent but always when i compare it to someone i really like i just find my kick and bass not that good. now i have the analyser and i just don't understand it. before i was only using span and smexoscope but never really understood what frequences are the trouble frequencys. i always felt like my kick and bass need more power or atleast one of them. now i bought the better analyser oscillosmegascope and it is so strange because it tells me that kick and bass are overlapping but i don't have any delay on it? is the analyser fooling me? it is so strange to me. i don't know what frequencys i am missing and how i can make the phase corrulation between kick and bass perfect that it really glues tougether like on the top artists. thats all i really want. i know you have the top quality we all want it would be so nice if you can make that.

  • @Fusmusic_

    Amazing vid as always, but.. I do have a question... So sometimes the phase of the track is only ok (+1) if the kick and the sub bass or bass (or both) are playing with the other elements of the song because of their mono magic haha but... If I go to a break and take out the kick and bass (or sub) and I leave only the elements that are really stereo.. my phase meter goes wild to the -1 side (as it should because of all the stereo information) but is it normal? or should I only care that if I turn the song to mono in the break with all the stereo information made mono there are not gonna be phase issues or should I always have something to back it up.. like a little of mono signal so the phase meter always stays in the middle or even a little bit to the right? It would mean the world to me if you could answer this question and btw sorry for my english haha and have a great day (or night) :)

    • @blanemurphy3795
      @blanemurphy3795 7 лет назад +9

      MrDrGemma I can answer your question a little. You don't want anything in your mix to be too close to that -1. What will happen is when your track gets played back on a mono system in a club or something, all that stereo info will disappear. You can still make a track or a sound sound wide without having phase issues by using good panning techniques and such. Or by using to similar but different sounds panned each way. There are many tricks to get width without phase issues. At the end of the day use your ears and check in mono when you are mixing for a club. This holds true for all the little single driver mono Bluetooth speakers as well. If sounds are too far to -1 they can sometimes disappear from the mix. But this video is great. Almost any mastering engineer will cut all stereo info below 150 or so. There is almost never a reason to have stereo info below 150. It just muddied up the mix. So use the mid side eq like he was doing. Also it's important to figure out which individual sounds are causing phase issues. I use a correlation meter on each sound in my tracks just to make sure they don't go too far to -1. It's ok to go under 0 on some sounds but just use your ears and check in mono frequently. Hope this helps. At the end of the day do what sounds good.

      In Izoztope Ozone there is a correlation meter in the stereo imager plugin. You can use the meter to " narrow " down the bands that cause phasing,.

    Trying to find Waldo (your mouse cursor...) :-)))
    Oh, and you've mentioned a Low-Pass filter, but it seems to me that there's a high-pass filter on screen...
    Am I wrong?
    And BTW, you've fixed the correlation issue but did not tested in mono after that, right?
    As far as I could understand you've got rid of the low end from the sides signal so it stops that messy bass running around the middle bass sources...
    Nice!
    That's very often used by hip-hop, rap, low-end dependent musical styles producers/mix-engineers...

    My only constructive criticism would be to respect nomenclature, simply as a nod to the profession, art and science that we all love.
    Mono ≠ Mid
    Side ≠ Stereo.
    Mids lack Side information, unlike Mono, which may contain Mid _and_ Side information.
    Sides lack Mid information unlike Stereo, which may contain both Mid _and_ Side information.

    I dont think this is a wise solution. Phase correlation issues arent really issues at all, in most cases. Its wise to heed causing unneccesary mono incompatibility. But it is also unwise to make the needle stay more on the right side, by compromising stereo power and effect.
    Just stay aware of what will get lost in mono, and you'll be fine. Use them 0% and 200% width buttons. Look at what happens. If you discover anything gets lost, what you don't want to get lost, then its a problem. Otherwise, dont fret too much about it.
    Some of the best albums out there intentionally have elements that would cancel out, when played in mono. Usually such albums are so dense with information anyway that the mono result will even be arguably at a better position if that info didn't get lost.
    So yea. The fact that such a low cut helps make the needle stay in the positive more, is not really the best approach. It can be useful in some cases. So yea.

    • @rist98
      @rist98 5 лет назад +1

      @Josh Beane If you flick to mono, then all of the "side" info is lost anway. So cutting them extra will not do anything. There is no reason to cut that side lows, as he did.
      Only maybe, if you wanna compete in the loudness war, and wanna get rid of low frequency info. Cos most systems will not play such lows in stereo anyway.
      But I'd say, if there isnt a reason to do this, then don't. It creates phase anomalies, that compromises the quality of the sound.
      It may be a tool for sound design, but not for engineering. IMO.

  • @DaCashRap
    @DaCashRap 4 года назад

    Bro, all you did was cut out the low end of the spectrum on the side-channel, which is known for causing phasing issues. Making your bass mono would work better in this case (!imo!).
