Le plus grand interprète de la musique française. Quel genie !

Its wonderful to hear a composition youve heard many times before and hear a performance that makes you get it! Francois truly delivers.

Yes! This is how Debussy himself must have played it, I'm sure! Such tenderness, grandeur, and attention to melody. And JOY!

Incroyable interprétation - Samson François introduit une profondeur inégalée dans la quête inlassable de cette mystérieuse isle joyeuse, le long d'un parcours jonche d'ecueils et de dangers. - Oui, un génie.

Debussy speaks the language of our souls. His compositional painting never ceases to amaze me, nor the artists who bring such inhumanly beautiful renditions.

I love watching him play-I wish there was more on film.

It is a very cruel fate which brought Samson François out of our admiration before that he could bring to an end his planned integral of the piano music of Debussy. This would have ideally complemented his worldwide admired Ravel integral. This 'Isle Joyeuse' gives us an idea of the appoach of Debussy by Samson François, and how accurately he respected the different layers of the music, which we already knew from 'Oiseaux tristes' and 'la vallée des cloches' of Ravel. But that recording demonstates it completely. This is for sure one of the best 'Isle Joyeiuse' ever registered.

Absolutely stunningly, beautiful performance. And I found looking at his hands, even, mesmerisingly moving.

Le mystère et un art du chant hérités de Cortot... L’esprit de Pelléas habite cette interprétation qui enterre toutes les autres excepté Horowitz et Gieseking... C’est définitif. Un témoignage unique sur l’art de S François.

A highly subtle and discriptive reading of this piano masterpiece.

Stunning! This piece is a gem. I love his masculine approach (is that an oxymoron?), unfussy, and direct. I wish we had short spots on television for classical pieces on the major channels CBS, ABC, NBC etc. so that the average viewer would have some exposure to classics. I guess I'm dreamin'.

This is a performance that has grown on me considerably on further listening. Great clarity, phrasing, dynamics and passionate. Not sure about his facial expression at 05:44...it's like he saw a cobra appear on the keyboard :)

I don't think it's a coincidence that that is where he is playing particularly badly. He should have taken 2 or 3 hours to refresh this piece before recording it.

I think this is a performance that shows how great he must have been. It is not entirely bad, but he does show some technical lapses that he probably handled with ease a few years earlier, and he does mangle the last few measures-- from around measure 248 to the end. There is an enviable energy and drive, though. I wish I could have heard him at his peak.

Tout à fait d'accord avec vous.
Samson François mérite mieux que cette interprétation qui m'a déçue de sa part. J'admets cependant votre hypothèse.
Je retiendrai de lui davantage les concertos de Ravel où il est excellent !

    • @argokan

There is actually much more to this performance, or his understanding of Debussy, in general, "than meets the eye". There is some subtlety and deeper understanding of what Debussy's music is conveying than given the credit by some. Technically perhaps not that perfect, but nevertheless.

How wonderful to hear Francois again in this work, as well as to see him in performance. He was such an extraordinary artist, and for those unfamiliar with him, don't fail to listen to him in Chopin, either. I've just listened to that bore Hamelin play L'isle a moment ago, and what can one say, save that to compare the two would be akin to comparing a genuine artist to a tax preparer on a Monday morning, whose only stimulation is reading the phone book -- aloud. .

That's so strange they started rolling the credits during the climax of the piece. I bet François was pissed when he saw what the editing team did to the video of his performance.

    • @drummerflex
      @drummerflex 8 лет назад +1

+Phil Snyder It annoys me so much when they do that. They don't see the different between a performance and music to play over credits. It doesn't matter what kind of music it is.
