Singer using her voice to sing without autotune or lipsync...❤
Yeah... that's why he can't notice imperfections of those other artists because of autotune
I agree with you. In this video she has an excellent voice. She sings in a way to follow Mariah's choices in singing and the hat tip also indicates the difference from more recent Morissette performances. As great as this performance is with a fabulous voice she is much better in later videos. Besides the lip shapes and vocal choices the tension in her neck and tone are noticable. I still prefer her version of this song to other singers because even if it's not as good in my opinion as what she could now do, I still prefer her less developed tone to others. Just my opinion.
Morissette sings the Mariah Carey version of this song, not the Phil Collns version, and she does it exactly like Mariah. With this particular song I prefer Phil Collins' version over Mariah's, probably because I've grown up in the 80s, and it brings so many memories with it. I see where you are coming from with all your critique, but still in my opinion this is not as bad of a performance as you make it. Yes, Morissette has developed, has grown up, vocally and personality-vise. But most singers, even internationally appreciated pop singers, would be more than happy to be able to sing on that level. Ever since I got familiar with Morissette (through Broadway Queen Lea Salonga btw.) she's never failed to amaze me, and I listen to her every day. Morissette is my favourite vocalist of all times.

I think you went too critical on her here. Why don't you listen first Mariah Carey's version where she accurately gave justice to the original song with almost the same riffs and runs. And fyi, she was still sick at the time of this video, you can clearly hear from her nasal tone that her nose is still clogged from colds.
I too think that this is not one of the best performances of Mori, but I don't think the reason is only she had an immature voice: there is the difficulty of singing in a transverse position with respect to the movement of the bus and the bumps (evident) on the holes of the road, besides trying too hard to sing like Mariah Carey, which is not really her style (shoot me if you want but for me she's better than Mariah).

I would tell right here please don’t be discourage to review more of Morissette’s performances both old and new when Morissette’s die hard fans come to your channel and start to judge you hahaha. For me, you and vocal coach Tara are both my favorites because i am really learning.
And yes I totally agree with all your points, Morissette has become one of the greatest vocalists of her generation, as evidenced from this performance of “Against All Odds” to “Akin Ka Nalang” vocal prowess.
Im sure Morissette would also agree to your critics because she is a good student, she listens to good critics and as a result we have now the vocal powerhouse Morissette.

She was panicking because it has a lots of flat chords and she did not want to sing flat. She was laughing, she was funny and cool and i just loved her even more because of this. This one has very low views i cannot find another upload, i hope you give this one a try. Im interested with both your good or bad (if there is any hahaha but i really think your gonna appreciate Morissette even more😅)

Agree 100% Dr. Dan. Not my favorite by Morissette performance. However, it shows how she has worked on her craft and where she was and where she is today. Amazing.
Thank you for expressing what I've felt all along,that for Morissette, this is a very mediocre performance. Not having a trained ear, I couldn't put my finger on the problems. I just knew it didn't sound good. If you really want to follow her transformation into the best of the best, take a gander at her audition for the VoicePhilippines where she was... not good. Just like here, there are elements of what we see and hear today. She's had many mentors along the way that have turned her into the powerhouse that we see today. Thanks again for an honest assessment. Most don't have the courage to withstand the heated comments.
I agree with you and Dr. Dan. This has never been one of my favorite performances of hers, and if I'm being perfectly honest, I actually don't care for it at all. She has grown tremendously as a vocalist, but even within the same timeframe of 8+ years ago, there are much better performances. One that I love that always seems to fly under the radar is her live performance of Reflection from Mulan, that her dad Amay Amon took of her when she's wearing a red dress.
I find it's way more impressive to see her noticeably improve and still improving!
Hiya Doc. Hope you're well. I completely agree with you in terms of growing...as an artist, as a person, as humans. This was certainly "not Morisette's best." But saying that is not just your normal "not her best" because we are talking about Mori, afterall. Did that make sense? I think she was trying to stick close to the Mariah version which has a lot of typical Mariah-ness. She has grown leaps and bounds and are always willing to challenge herself and learn and grow. Glad that she is open and willing to hone her craft and not remain stagnant. Take care sir and until the next one. Cheers.

2014-2015 several Love On Top performances, each one better than the one before - she greets people in the crowd and in one sings within the crowd.
2016 - Wish Bus, Against all Odds
2017 - Wish Bus, Secret Love Song. Better than Against all Odds but she still sings from the side of her mouth. First viral performance.
2018. Never Enough and Akin Ka Na Lang on Wish Bus.
2019 was Morissette's annus horribilis when she lost her voice for months due to overwork, had a crisis involving her family etc.
2020 was her recuperation and she started writing own songs with her fiancee. Several videos done from home.

Even though she is my favorite singer of all time, and even though there are lots of people who love this performance, I have to admit I have never cared much for it personally. But his doctoral degree in music with extensive singing and voice training experiences makes him a higher authority than those hundreds of reactors. He maybe mistaken in some of his criticisms (whether positive or negative), but his expert opinion deserves serious consideration coz he is the only reactor who has a doctor's degree in music.
I get all that you said because you're a professional coach/ singer esh. but I also think that it's just the style of the song and the way Mariah sang it, made her deliver the song in the way that she did. Hello, I think one of the reasons why you aren't amazed by her musical choices is that you said in the first part of the video that you like more Phil Collins' rendition than Mariah Carey, but Morissette based her musical choices on Mariah Carey's version since she is one of her musical influences.

She was trying to be creative with her runs and vibrato which is not her strength at all. This caused her to miss notes. That's the root cause here. If sings the straight melody and inserts her normal whistle would have been better. And I think yes she had received feedback, She does less runs and vibrato these days. She's staying with her strength of power vocals.
Isn't this the bus where she was sick? Maybe pick an earlier version of her as a baseline.
STILL, nobody today can sing this Mariah Carey version the way Morissette slayed it... She was only 20 yrs old when she did this live performance on Wish Bus 107.5 (on a moving bus with a sounstage devoid of auto tune crap).
Dr Dan. Like you I rate Morissette as one of the best vocalists out there. You don't appear to have analysed one of her best performances yet. “Could You Be Messiah”. It is sung with so much passion, stripped back to almost just piano and is done in one take. Get the tissues out and watch “Could You Be Messiah”. You may be right about her development but in my opinion, this poor performance of hers is better than anyone else's I've seen from back then or even now.
I understand what you are saying about her vocal development and maturity. However, I think you are dismissing her earlier vocal performances too quickly in favor of the full grown Morissette. For a lot of us who started with Morissette when she was only 19 years old, we saw and heard an incredible vocalist that was already better than most contemporary singers on the air wave; hence, many became immediate fans and cheered for her success. Yes, she got better over time. But for me, the excitement was discovering this very young female artist who wowed a lot of music lovers worldwide while she was just starting to make a name for herself. Even then, I thought she was peerless.
She is great and highly praised in her own only fans niche. Not sure everyone like here singing though. She has her own youtube channel but nothing is peaking. She peaks when she collaborates with major companies > ABS CBN/Star Music and Wish Bus. But on her own, nothing is peaking or going viral.

What you hear is from an amateur's point of view, what he hears is from an expert's. Who do you think is hearing it correctly?
