I always found it funny that they would just stand there and let the bad happen before reacting. I'm glad you mentioned you knew 'Tit For Tat' was the sequel for this one. After that, I hope you also have 'Our Wife' & 'County Hospital' on your soon to be watched Laurel & Hardy list.

Not to mention, "Sons of the Desert." Hilarious! It's also in the Library of Congress for being a significant contribution to film making and culture. County Hospital is also awesome.

@@alanmeakin5965 Funny! Can't wait for "County Hospital" which is outrageous. And the classic "Sons of the Desert" once again with the hilarious Mae Bush. She bounces off them perfectly. Excellent comedic timing by all. The very funny Charlie Chase is in it too. He has a place on the "Hollywood Walk of Fame" right up there with the BIG stars.

    wonderful, wonderful comedians.
I am 71 years old, and no matter how many time i see them, i still end up laughing my head off.
My lovely old dad only had to hear the theme music, and he would start laughing, that's the way i am now.

The doctor in this film was also a voice over actor for Walt Disney. He provided the voice of Sneezy in Snow White as well as the Willy the Giant in Mickey and the Beanstalk.

It’s technically part 2 of a trilogy, as the same doctor ended up kicking them out of County Hospital when Ollie was in there with gout. He’s doing a home visit instead in Them Thar Hills.

This is such an underappreciated movie from Laurel and Hardy. The fact that they took advantage of the prohibition to make comedy out of it is genius. Nothing will come close to these two.

Billy Gilbert (the doctor) also played the owner of the junkyard in Towed In A Hole. Mae Busch and Charley Hall both appear in The Live Ghost, which might be an appropriate choice for Halloween weekend.

  • @derBenIsPlaying

This one is most interesting to be honest, the fun facts for it aren't that crazy, but they are existant non the less!
The movie has one of the more interesting cast, we have the wonderfull Mae Bush, our Professor Scrapyard Owner Doctor Horned Husband Billy Gilbert, and of course, the all so always-explosive tempered Storeowner played by the marvelous Charlie Hall.
This storyline is what you can call a reference to "County Hospital" and a predecessor to "Saps at Sea", in all three movies, the start is almost universally the same, Hardy gets a doctor visit and due to a condition he and Stan vacate the local area and decide to go somewhere else, or are forced to go somewhere. Just like in County Hospital, Ollie even has a bad foot. And just like Saps at Sea, they utilize a vehicle to get to their vacation site, in SaS its a boat, here its a trailer.
Did you know this movie is a predecessor for "Tit for Tat"??? Mr. Laurel and Hardy meet again with a Shopowner named Mister Hall(!!!), and they recognize each other due their run in in the mountains (Them Thar Hills), leading to a lengthy and violent feud between the two shop owners, as Hard and Laurel also want to open a shop directly in the vicinity of Mr. Hall. It is one of the VERY FEW movies that has a direct reference to another movie or sets the foundation for another movie. Nearly all other movies of L&H are indeed encapsulated, isolated plots that have no continuity to any other movie.
The fighting scene goes hand in hand with what people thought back then was happening between Law Enforcement and moonshiners, shootouts and arrests, maybe even explosions. The reality was that many moonshiners were only caught when people ratted them out, the police did raids on known distribution points, or the police found an shack in the wilderness with equipment in it. Moonshiners weren't at a "hideout" for this exact reason, to avoid being raided like this. The moonshiners dumping out the evidence would not have helped them, since they are in a shootout with the police, they would each been sentenced to 30 years in leavenworth, or shot dead either ways, the plot is a bit strange in this regard.
The 1930's saw a large and more commercially successful production of "dry ice", which was exactly used to make smoke here and there when used - but in the case of the Ford Model T cooler that Ollie is driving, they used a smoke cap to generate a sense of "overheating" for the struggling engine. You can even see the efficiency of the engine in one short moment, right when they pull up to the well, the large radiator fan is pulling in the air and with it the smoke, showing how efficient that cooling design was.
Charlie named after his real life self in this movie, Mr. Hall and Wife, this is just marvelous - look how fly Mr. Hall looks, and he's driving a nice car too, a 1930's Ford V8 Tudor from what it looks like. Quite the superluxurious vehicle way back when. Its identifyable due to a slightly bent chrome "bar" horizontally in front of the cooler, and a set of spare full sized wheels on the left and right side. There's also a tiny oval shaped bump on the hood which is the cooler grill figure in other cars, which makes me certain this is a V8, pretty decent ride Mr. Hall!!!
The movie is albeit being full of slapstick, more story driven, which is what was the theme of the time, away from silent movie overused slapstick and on to a new venture, making more plot-driven stories.
All in all, a good episode, 5/5! Dad sees to have enjoyed it too.
