Lyrics:
Johnny’s on the back porch drinking red wine
He knows that it could be the very last time
He raises the glass up to his lips and wonders
How could a boy from a little bay town
Grow up to be a man, fly the whole world round
Then end back up on the same damn ground he started
You might not get what you pay for
You know that nothing’s for sure
And an open heart looks a lot like the wilderness
Lately he’s been thinking ‘bout the meaning of time
The small amount we’re given must be some sort of crime
Yet the little we have feels like too much most of the time
He takes another sip of that blood red wine
Just waiting on the stars that will never align
A little luck, a little love, a little light and you’ll be doing just fine
But you might not get what you pay for
You know that nothing’s for sure
And an open heart looks a lot like the wilderness
So open up your heart
Take it out, and put it back in
Signs are all around you
Let it begin
You might not get what you pay for
You know that nothing’s for sure
And an open heart looks a lot like the wilderness

Sarah is a musical genius. God, what a songwriter and lucky us!
Perfectly said.
Sarah Jarosz - Johnny.
Beautiful song. Brilliant video. Great voice.
Song moves me to tears everytime.
This should have more than 87K views. The song was stuck in my head. Still is. Most songs with 100M views can't do that. Amazing song!
At least she just won the Grammy for Best Americana Album... she is an incredible musician, singer and songwriter..
Great art/video and great song . Love her music and voice.
Salvador Dali would be prooouuud!! 🤩
absolutely brilliant song and video
one of the greatest musicians on the planet...
I 1st heard the song on world cafe I pulled over to the side of the road to find out what it was on their playlist a song hasn't done that to me in so long.
a great talent of a new generation.
beautiful production on this record
To my old ears it's perfect.
just great.
Wonderful
I've been listening to this song multiple times a day since I first "discovered" it!
I first heard it on PRE News & Ideas in North Carolina, wbu
Me too. Discovered on WFUV in nyc.
I love that guitar riff he uses throughout
Thank you KNBT in New Braunfels for playing this gem. Simply beautiful.
Thanks Sarah. You never fail to surprise and delight us. We are so very lucky.
I don't know why it took me so long to find this. But I'm glad I did, you fill my soul Sarah, thank you. March 8th in Knoxville, oh ya....!
Sarah is my friend from Wimberley. She is beyond wonderful!
Sarah strikes me as a nice, genuine person off-stage. And the consummate artist! Just curious, what does she like in addition to music?
@@mikewaddell7340 Sarah is a smart girl. She sees truth & I’ve heard her reference Dylan’s “Murder Most Foul” re JFK & she sang Gnarls Barkley “Crazy” but when we’re together it’s always music. We were friends at bluegrass jams (led by Mike Bond) every Friday some years ago. She’s a lot younger than me.
She is amazing, what talent she has
You are truly blessed. She seems so wonderful.
I'm older but I do have a crush on her
my favorite release of the pandemic. Delicious music for sure.
sweet!--jj, marble falls
I'm from the fucking hood the ghetto and this song is fire
I know. I've loved R and B since the 70's and I found Sarah about 10 years ago and she is incredible. I think she masters 7 instruments... :) Mando prodigy at 12
Such a great voice. Beautiful song!
Just found this new favorite song, I love it.
Amazing tune !! .. the voice, the harmonics, the guitar work/tone.
Every note is perfect!! 🥰
The Bob Cried Wolf band are fans !!! Love it
Very haunting melody
I don't know what's in this video ,first I tried to understand what the video is trying to say later I gave up and just watched it .Something about it feels good it makes me more relax and shuts me down from my responsibility for sometime thank you sarah for making me feel better
I like johnny let's keep him 🤠
Always quality music from Sarah
Getting major 90s vibes. I likey
How does that not have more views?
I just love this song and every time i hear it i love it more. Superb job, Sierra. Bravo!
Sierra? This is Sarah Jarosz, not Sierra Hull.
Such a fantastic song and album! Congrats Sarah. This is such a gift for all of us. Super cool video too... "An open heart looks a lot like the widlerness" So true. XOXO
Love this video!! I love the creativity given that no location shooting was able to take place. As others have noted the production and arrangement of this song is sublime... probably my favourite song of 2020 so far 😊
Caught you live in '15. SJ Always leveling up, think you found your stride. Always love and appreciation.
Gawd I love the production and arrangement of this track! And of course the vocals are sublime.
Brought tears to my eyes.
Me too!
I love this song. The video is definitely related to the lyrics-all themes inspired by nature/wilderness. Bravo Sarah!! 👍🏼👏🏼😊
I must say your song runaway is probably my favorite songs , ever .. I'm not just saying that . I felt so inspired. id play it on repeat. I kind of listened to it it like God was singing it to me . ( I was in a bad relationship at the time Nd it gave me strength to leave) such a powerful song .
Awesome song, love the video.
Love the new album and I am really enjoying the videos as well. Very nice.
You deserve way more views. This was brilliant.
Love it !!
Really cool video
In love with your music !
Beck's Sea Change vibes - love it
Whole record is so stinkin good! As a Shawn Colvin fan from WAY back it is SO cool that you made this record with John Leventhal, it's like you heard me askin for it. lol Best wishes in all things Sarah!
Mezmerizing song and the video has a very nice psychedelic touch!
Love the song Sarah........
You're definitely a favorite of mine.
Actually, you were a "bucket list" performer at one time, till I (by chance) able to see you at the Dakota Jazz Club.
I even got a picture of you and I, AND your autograph on a couple of your recordings.
In World on the Ground Sarah seems to be expressing the sense of lost dreams, lives that hit the hard walls and floors of reality, despair, and even suicide. This video was surprising in that it seems to express the fractured nature of the singer rather than those of whom she sings. Maybe this expresses the fractured sense we all feel at failing to realize the visions of what our lives should be rather than the fleeting failures and successes they actually are. Love this song and the stark abstract visuals.
This is not the video she intended. It's the video as a result of Covid... I like it! :)
What a fantastically surreal and marvellous video! A real feast for the senses along with that awesome song...
Quick note to a certain subset of my fellow old farts.
The ones who chronically grumble that "there's no GOOD music these days-not like the stuff we had back in nineteen and mumbledy-mumble."
You know who you are.
If I could have just four minutes of your time?
Toto, we ain’t in Wimberley any more. How good is this woman?
I know. I've been in awe of her talent since she was 17. :) yay Wimberley!
Sharon Mickey @ Sarah truly is a blessing for us all to treasure!
Awesome
Fantástica, como siempre. Besos.
This is kinda the sound I'm going for
This is s-o-o-o good. There is an artistic and intellectual maturity at work here that is evident in every aspect of the song and the performance, signalling a step change to the next level. I loved the earlier material for its rootsy, stripped-back qualities, but this is on another plane altogether. Utterly brilliant. Sarah, you take my breath away.
Whoah! Great video!
Hi Sarah, absolutely beautiful! I can find a bit of Suzanne Vega's tone in your vocals, always loved so much her first album, and for some reason your music reminds it...anyway, all the best, from Buenos Aires
I hear a little Sinead Lohan in her vocal style. Sarah is awesome
This drug makes me feel like I’m on video 🥴
Wow, how she's matured even from build you up from bones - and she was impressive then. just great.
OMG! I'm an old guy and have seen thousands of music videos - this MOVED me - like no other! Thank you Sarah!
Yes, this was good indeed... but Madison Cunningham's music REALLY does it for me... (she is a super talent, absolutely amazing..)..
Both are very talented.. 🎶👍
This xideo is a real artwork. Thank you
Feel the same way, bro.
60 here and love Sarah's music.
This is wise
loves this.
...are you trying to make me have a moment? Because it’s working.
Very nice Sarah.
I've only listened to the new album once, but my goodness; where do you find the depth to write like that already?
she's written like this since she was 18.
She wrote "Broussard's Lament," about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when she was 14...
It's definitely different from what she usually does but it's also very good.
Nice Sheryl Crow touch.
This is my favorite on the new album so far, Sarah! The music is sort of mystical sounding or something. I can't quite find words to describe the exact feeling I get listening to it, but I can say that it's a similar vibe to my very favorite of ALL your songs - Mile on the Moon! Maybe it's in a minor key, which I always feel really drawn to. Now, I must comment on the graphics in the video! Somebody was smoking something when this was designed, right?! LOL!! Wait, I DID just take my cough med a little while B4 I watched this! Maybe I was hallucinating! 😲 KIDDING! Very creative - I love it! Hey, are you offering autographed copies of the new CDs for an additional cost? I would really love that! You autographed the Undercurrent CD for me. I love it!I have all of your CDs & I listen 2them so much I may end up wearing them out & getting replacements! HaHa!! I am pretty sure I am your biggest fan - at least in NC! I hope you can come do a show here soon so I can finally see you perform in person! (Incidently, you are from the same state as my other favorite music artists, Pentatonix! They are from Texas too! I am very obsessed with their music, too. Like yours, it just brings pure joy to my heart! I suffer from severe chronic pain from a bladder disease & a painful abdominal disorder, & when I hear you sing it helps me to just be transported away to a place in my head where the pain almost goes away & I feel pure joy! Thanks 4 sharing your lovely talent with the world!) Let me know about the autographed CD! Love you!!!! - your 60 y/o megafan Bev. Krebs - (20 y/o girl in a 60 y/o body! I never grew up inside! In fact, more accurately, I am a 12 y/o inside most of the time! Even my 25 y/o daughter says so! HaHa!! Take care of youself in these crazy times!
Beverly Krebs I might give you a run for your money on being the biggest Sarah fan in NC. What I find amazing is that most of Sarah’s fans have that same “soul to soul” connect with Sarah’s music. Hard to describe, but I haven’t felt that same connection with an artist’s music since Joni Mitchell. Bev, you and I are from a similar era so you might have been a Joni fan too! Anyway, it’s good to know that there is a kindred spirit in NC regarding Sarah’s music. I too await the day her touring brings her to NC.
I like her 😃❤️
Cool.
What a cool video.XXOOXX
sounds good,... i remember beth orton
Did Cyriak do the video for this?
Why does this song and Billy strings away from the mire sound the same ?
The surrealist /collage / photoshop-oriented video seems at odds with the story of a a 20-something man (or woman) realizing that the clock is ticking and the world is mad. The answer is blowin' in the wind, love is the answer, the answer is to live and see what shakes. For me, I'd rather just watch SJ play in a room with windows and the sun creeping across the wooden floor. But hey.
Sarah, your editor. Are they ok?
I am sorry, i have to disagree. I can see where you are coming from, and the video is not characteristic of Sarah, but I call it 'Creative Uniqueness', and this one i must admit takes the cake, (an old expression meaning is the best). I used to own an advertising agency in New York/New Jersey,., you have to forgive these artist, the are ALL out of their minds! Quick example. One of our clients was a group of of stores that sold 'unique gifts'. Our client wanted a tag line that would show her uniqueness, which is why you should buy from her. So i got our team of artist and copywriters together. Listen to this, one artist a beautiful girl from Staten Island. I said to her, "What creative thing do you have for me Lee?" She showed me her drawing.... of a F*&N "EYE". TO THIS DAY... i still have no idea what she was thinking. she tried to explain it, but i am not that creative to even have a clue of what she was thinking (although she did do lines occasionally)... We came up with a cat giving a GIFT to a mouse, with the tag line..."We give our unique gifts to the ones we love, and our friends". They had their best Christmas ever!
This video looks like someone discovered all the options in Adobe After Effects. :) That's OK, though, as since you're featured along with this marvelous song I'll watch it over and over. I have immersed myself in your music since "My Muse" stopped me in my tracks (listening to Pandora). I hadn't heard of you before but my ears (and brain) registered something special when I first heard your voice. Someday (hopefully) my wife and I will get to listen to you in concert. My better half even sings along when I play your tunes--which is unusual for her to like what I'm listening to!
I use PowerDirector 18, but I thought the exact same thing...LOL!
and too a pass girl Paula
Tracey Bonham approves
I'm not a fan of the gimmicky video effects distorting and obscuring your visual performance at times. I wish it was more like your "Green Lights" video, which was too awesome for words. :) Thanx anyway for fulfilling my Twitter request to see a video for this great song. (-MikeGo)
You visualize the landscapes in her lyrics... I adore Sarah Jarosz and have since she was 17 but I agree she doesn't need gimmicky videos...
Green lights was so beautiful!!!!!!
Johnny's dead
Something Like Alice in Chains?😍
Love Sarah and the song but hate the music video.
Love the song, hate the video
Very strange.
A great song with a dumb video.
Love the song, the video looks like it was produced by using random IG filters......
Where is the bluegrass. This new album is not so bad, but what happend?
I mean her albums have never really been strict bluegrass, but this new one just has a somewhat different instrumentation
Progress. Artistic evolution. Avoiding being caught in a musical rut. That's what happened. Did The Beatles' fifth album sound like their first? Do all of Alison Krauss' albums sound alike? Nope.
she is too complicated for me..
?????
So far, 27 people have no soul. I LOVE this song.
Agree 110% !!!!!!!
30 soulless husks now
@@ki4gmb ....Classless, Souless Sad Excuses For Humans !!!!!
I get a very folk meets nirvana incesticide vibe from both the video and the song. Weird but cool, keep it up!
Def. sounds like it could be a Kurt Cobain collaboration.
Yes!
Sounds like silverchair to me but I get what you're saying
yeah i totally hear what you're talking about but really my brain was just thinking it sounded kind of 90s in a way i didn't know how to put my finger on.
Truer words have never been spoken!!! I'm a delivery driver in the Florida Keys and listen to Pirate radio station out of Key West. This song came on as I was traveling across the 7 Mile Bridge. Really Good song!!!!
A Flawless recording from the brightest young talent to come along in years. What a beautiful record.
I need a new word just for you, Sarah. ‘Amazing’ doesn’t cut it anymore!
I am so glad I finally found Sarsh Jarosz. Thank you RUclips. I wad just browsing
Ikr!! She's amazing.
@@lydiapiano24 Yes she is love her songs.
Beautiful tune. Creepy as hell video.
Fantastic performance, and amazing songwriting!!! Such purity in Sarah's voice!! Also, kudos to her for being asked by David Crosby to sing with him on his new album!!!!
Wow! Great music......another old man moved by this record....
Heard this song for the very first time tonight on college radio station WERS.
Miss Jarosz has a voice so captivating with lyrics so cutting it's hard to describe, yet you want to listen over and over.
Her mastery of the minor cords in the chorus and bridge sections elicits concurrently both melancholy for the subject character Johnny, and joy for her vocals and finely crafted instrumentation.
In a very rare instance, the cover art of two birds against a cement backdrop hints to what the song feels like, both tender honesty and the hardness of life.
Please by whatever means available to you, support this artist. We need what she's giving.
I adore this tune and video.
Heard this for the first time on Planet Rock today. Great song - the vocal harmonies and guitar remind me of Alice In Chains and for me this is a very good thing!
Some Alice in Chains vibes here. I really like it.
