When I was in middle school, we had a quarter of the year of science class that was dedicated to physics and one of the projects we did was build a bridge out of dried spaghetti. It had to cross a 12 inch gap, weigh less than a certain amount of grams, be made only out of dried spaghetti and white glue (like elmer's glue), and support a toy car across it's entire length from one side to the other. I think the toy car weight something like 2-3 ounces? It was a pretty fun assignment. Other than the specifications listed above, the bridge could be built however you wanted. Supports on top and bottom? Sure. Want it to look like the San Fransisco bridge? you bet. Want it to arch or to be perfectly straight? You got it. My dad was a teacher at that middle school, and he participated in all the projects. For a while, he did a complicated honeycombing sandwiched between thin lines of spaghetti. He did every kind of bridge you can imagine, was always available to help kids build their bridges before and after school, and let ya test your bridge with the car before the project's due date (and helped you clean up the spaghetti if it broke). Anyway, this game and games like it remind me of that, and of how my dad always encouraged kids who were super into STEM to pursue their dreams, including helping HS students get scholarships to college and whatnot. He's on the State Board of Education now, fighting hard behind the scenes in a super Red Conservative state to update science curriculum and technology in the classrooms, and advocating for student's rights and well being. So uh, yeah. Thanks for playing Poly Bridge 3, I guess. It reminded me to call my dad, haha.
