This video is cringeworthy. There's nothing wrong with the Parkside lathe. I have one and I have no problems with it. The problem here is that this guy is using wet wood, the wrong speed, and the wrong tool. Furthermore, he's not tightened the tool rest properly and the lathe has not been secured to the table. He's deliberately thrashing the tool, trying to make it not perform, rather than working within it's limitations and according to the instructions that came with it. I suspected as much when I watched the way he unboxed it. He had more respect for the box than he had for this tool. Okay - the Parkside lathe is not top of the line but if you use it the way it is supposed to be used it will give you good results. All in all, for £60-£80 it's good value for money -- especially when a professional lathe will cost upwards of £2,000+. This content creator, on the other hand, wasted six minutes of my life with a dialogue-free panning of a tool he had no intention of treating fairly. I won't be watching any more of his videos.
If you really consider this as a serious review of anything other than the fact this bloke would probably film himself farting, then I'd stay away from any sharp objects

To be fair his speed is turned down hence why it stops......I never tried turning before so took the plunge in this and I've turned oak beech and black walnut and to be fair to it they turned out ok (considering I'm 36 and never tried)..... The tools were in need of a good sharpen but again who's not going to buy a new set if they enjoyed. For £59 if it lasts a year and gives me some practice I'm happy and no doubt il certainly appreciate a far better quality lathe in the future
Preparation of the wood to be turned, and ensuring that your tools are sharp is paramount. If the instructions had been followed, and dry wood had been used then the results would have been much better. I will not be subscribing to this person's channel.

Audio is out of sync on the video. Uses what looks like a wet bit of birch picked up from the garden. Doesn't bother sharpening tools before use. For £60 you really cant complain with what you get, its a small lathe for light hobby work. This seem more like a case of 'A poor workman blames his tools'!. check out the video by bunkerTools, he manages to make some amazing things on his, including bowls.

I was worried before he even started using it. Cable draped over the machine, drive head not properly knocked into the wood (most likely reason for the wood stopping), tool post knob and tools just lobbed onto table, tools not held properly. This guy is an accident waiting to happen. Really, I won't be looking at his videos for information ever again. I have never seen a lath mistreated and used so badly. I've been using lathes for more than 30 years. This fool won't be getting my attention again.
Reading through the comments, it seems like a common misconception. Actually wet wood are softer and easier to turn. It's just that the piece may shrink or crack when it goes through the drying process.
What do you expect if you use wood straight from the tree, take cuts that are far too deep for the machine, and don 't follow the instructions? It needs screwing to a rigid worktop, that's why they give you woodscrews.
thats not why they gave wood screws. The wood screws are for the face plate. And the lathe is a cheap qaulity buy a record power lathe or a jet one for real qaulity
To be fair, its only a little machine, perhaps for light work with sharp tools, taking a less aggressive cut, it might be OK as a starter, but I think you would outgrow it quickly.
probably adequate for the odd lamp-pull and curios, but not for bowl turning! The chisels need sharpening, the tool rest upstand is too short, and it is woefully under-powered, but it is surprisingly well made for the money. Needs twice the power! I got one because it is marginally better than the one I'd hacked together last time I needed a small lathe. As a first hobby lathe for small pieces it is ideal, cheap and compact.

to be fair it looks like something you would use to make pens or beads with, and your test was to put a dirty gert big stick in it and then tried turning it with the supplied chisels, that in all honesty you would probably have been able to ride bare arse to london on.
You've convinced me that I in fact should get it. Parkside tools are generally excellent value for money, I didn't even know you get lathes this cheap....LIDL is the best supermarket in the world that I know of!
I just purchased this last week. Lidle was getting rid of the whole middle isle for half price and I got this lathe for £45 I only got it because it was that cheap, I’ve managed to snap the aluminium tool rest because the bearing that holds the Chuck on failed and became super wobble, I’ve contacted lidle and I’m just waiting for them to either replace it or send me the parts to fix it! Not a bad starter but I definitely wouldn’t want to spend any more that £45 for it!

Hi I have a problem. I am 15 years of age and I am starting to get into making pens but there is a problem with my lathe. I purchased a parkside lathe but the pen mandrel I purchased doesn’t fit on the machine. I have tried a 1 mt and a 2 mt pen mandrel but my lathe doesn’t have a hole to fit. All I can do is set the pen mandrel on the mantle and when I turn it on it’s not powered properly and and when I touch the chisel against the black the whole mandrel stops spinning is there a chuck or something I can purchase were my pen mandrel will be secured tightly to the lathe so it doesn’t stop spinning when I try and chisel it ?
Yes, you can buy those 3-jaw or 4-jaw self-centered chucks online, but they are not cheap. A good quality one will be more expensive than this lathe. Another option is that you can secure your piece on the faceplate with screws. Leave at least 2-3 cm extra length of wood on your left hand side for turning.

the wood was attached to the chuck properly its just that the lathe and the chisels are of a low qaulity
