I swear, every time I have a specific issue with my own game (Such as my swing right now) you guys ALWAYS come out with the exact video I need to watch. You two - Brad and Kyle - are easily the best instructive bowling youtubers in the planet!
Watched this video before league last night. Have been struggling all year. Average was down to 193 from 205 at the end of last year. Threw up a 268/213/264(745)
I will be 66 in March. Had 2 knee replacements and slide ankle reconstruction in the last 1 1/2 years trying to start back but it’s slow. Thanks for these videos.
You were speaking directly to me. Being one of your coaching students and 68 yrs. of age, my main issues have been the crossover step and my arm swing. Brad and Kyle, you guys are awesome!
My game have benefitted from your coaching, for the longest time I am not sure what I did was right/wrong, you both have cleared so much of my doubt and I can feel my game is getting better each week, God bless you 2 kind souls for making this bowling community a much better place.
Thanks guys. It might surprise you how much of this stuff we consider to be basic no-brainer techniques are not common knowledge. I think I bowled for over 20 years before I even heard the term spine-tilt, or the cross-over step. Many of us just picked up a ball and threw it, with very bad results. It wasn't until years later that we slowly worked out the basics and began throwing the ball with proper timing or balance. Your videos are perfect for any bowler who hasn't had professional coaching. Thanks again.
Love the tip about trying to hit your right leg for a right handed bowler. It definitely helps me try to keep the ball closer to my left ankle and for the ball to be under my head.
Thank you guys for this video! I went from averaging 190 to 150 recently, and I couldn't understand why my swing was so inconsistent, especially practicing an inside release for more leverage and revs. One thing I was doing is standing straight up, which did make the ball go behind me, which has thrown off my timing at the line (has also sped up my ball speed, due to not being able to get around the ball) which means I lost revs and power. I'm going to practice this today! I appreciate you guys for the tutorials.
I went from a 190 bowler to a 165 bowler in my league recently. Luckily I bowl with 200+ bowlers, who watched my form and release and kept pointing out what I was doing wrong. Bad habits had crept into my game and made tough shots out of what used to be the simplest shots. Do you have any videos of yourself bowling when you were averaging 190? If you do, take some videos of yourself bowling now (and struggling). it will be obvious to you to see what you are doing differently. You know your own form the best, and you should be able to spot even minor differences in what you used to do, and what you do now.
@@Ironfangzu that's a real thing! I felt like I couldn't relax at the bottom of the swing, which made me miss inside, faster ball speed and reva dropping like flies. I've learned how to have soft hands and get good power and reva while playing different angles, sigh. Bowling is hard l!
Great vlog! First time that anyoned mention online (that I am aware) that the spine tilt in the set up should place the ball underneath the head--most just say it is to get the hip out of the way. Thanks again!
Man, I did not realize just how important the fit was when I started bowling. I got my HyRoad drilled by a local pso a few months ago and it has never felt comfortable/smooth. Got a Phaze 2 drilled by a family friend and when he went to 'match' them he immediately said "oh....oh no...". It is INFINITELY more comfortable and now I can get more speed with my swing
No backswing for me. But.... Hey Brad and Kyle I am 75 years old. And I can easily do the stepover. No problem for me, but thanks for the three good tips. There is always something to improve. Love from Venray, Holland
Guys, thanks again! Great assistance, very educational video. Nevertheless, could you prepare a video of how you position your body in relation to the swing when you are playing from far left (40) to far right?
If you use a crossover step you also need to use a pivot step that keeps that swing slot open the entire approach. I see many people use a crossover step correctly then they walk right with the 2nd to last step basically nullifying what you are trying to achieve.
The crossover step single handedly raised my average 20 pins into the 210s. It creates a perfect swing plane creating much more consistency. Before I was CONSTANTLY pulling the ball left. The other tip is have a soft thumb and don’t grip the ball.
Man... I recorded myself bowling and this was one of my biggest problems. Because of this one thing I was messing up, the rest of my body compensated for it. So it developed a lot of bad habits in my approach. For starters, I push the ball out to the right on the start. The ball then comes all the way behind my back. My finish position is good, but because of my second step not crossing over my first, my entire body is aiming to the right the whole approach. Really funny to see me basically walking at angle though. Lol. I need to really work on this all summer.
I love the way Kyle manhandles Brad in these videos! Kyle, I'm sure it's killing you to not be on the lanes, hope you're healing well! And I'll chime in as well, that this video is SO well timed. I am a lady, and having the HARDEST time keeping my swing straight; it's like my arm is posessed, lol. Excited to try these tips tomorrow.
Excellent video! I have had a horrible backswing for years and didn't know how to correct it. Now, with some practice, maybe I can improve it and become more consistent. Thanks
I took 2 years off of bowling and am getting back into it and these videos help ALOT. I recorded myself the other day and noticed my arm swing went almost behind my back and looked very unnatural Hopefully this helps!
I am guilty of having a power step to the right and I have been trying hard to get it directly in front. Also I still have a tendency to bring my arm behind my back instead of bringing it straight back. I was practicing last night and I pulled a lot of shots because I was thinking so hard about having a straight back and straight forward swing. Thanks once again for your awesome tips, Brad and Kyle.
Seventy year old bowler here and I have limited good choices for my crossover step, my backswing, and my release. In the end I have had to compromise technique with ability to repeat a bowling throw. I have a upright stance throughout the swing, a mini crossover step, a short backswing, and a suitcase release. But... I get to keep bowling as I get older so there is that. 🙂
I wish they would of identified the difference in the two approaches since your Cross over foot don't link up the same on both approaches... As in the 4 your cross over is your left foot while the 5 you Cross over with your right foot
I'm watching this and when Brad stepped right, I thought it looked familiar. My 10 yr old daughter does this (not that extreme). I pulled up an old video of her and she is straight up and steps slightly right on the second step. I will be showing this video (time stamp 4:52) to her. Thanks for the great tips... PS I also noticed she is going into her "push away" to late and trying to swing her right arm back while her right leg (4th step) is going forward.
What I saw is that you usually get a figure 8 pattern with your swing if you push away at the wrong angle (or don't create that slot for the ball and have to compensate by moving the ball around your body). So if you push off to the left of your target, you will usually miss right. If you push off to the right, you will miss left. Also if you have a straight line, it doesn't matter as much if you release the ball too early or too late, because the ball will always to towards your target.
True, I set the ball down early (drop) about 3 or 4 times in a 3 game set for my leagues. The result is surprisingly good because of a straight swing created by all of the above. The shot is weaker of course having lower speed and revs but the ball usually finds its way to the pocket. Striking or leaving a makeable spare. Lucky? Maybe but I think that a person creates their own luck in bowling by throwing a good shot more consistently using the videos tips
Brad & Kyle- great & such pertinent content, again ! So, one thing you didn’t get to was the spine tilt at swing thru/release. I have the tilt at set up & execute the crossover step but don’t maintain the spine tilt. So I’m back to where I started - on the side & top of the ball. Ugh. How does one achieve the spine tilt at release- just maintain it throughout the swing ? Thanks !
I have a left bad knee which makes me lose my balance so I use my right leg instead with my right throwing hand which seems unorthodox but gets the job done. Still working on my hooks which is really challenging.
Right? I tried this 1000000 times and I end up on the incorrect foot at the end... 🤔...I am right handed and do the initial push away as dictated on their 4 step approach video... But the Cross step doesn't seem to match
i find this interesting because (as a new-ish bowler, just over a year in) everyone told me that i needed to STOP doing a crossover step, which was my initial instinct to have. now i'm wondering if maybe i need to go back to it, at least slightly...
You guys explain things really well. I do the "lean" and keep the ball tucked in like you show. I'm not good on approach. I don't step right and I don't slide. I don't know how. I am a new bowler. So, as with everything, the things you explain are always a "starting point"?
I had a slight rotator cuff tear, and between this and dropping to 14, I totally lost my swing. I’ve been working on it for over a year. My problem is when trying to keep everything in front of me, how to open up the lane when the shot breaks down. I have trouble moving left, and hitting my boards to the right if I’m trying to keep my swing plane straight. How do I do this. Start left, and drift right to my mark? This seriously screws up my mind. Also how many boards should your swing take up? Say I’m trying to hit 15, where do I need to be starting on the approach? Thanks for any suggestions in advance.
My problem is getting my elbow out when trying to be underneath the ball and then releasing to curve it… my elbow goes out as if to push it out to the right side of lane and it go straight.. then hook Vs it just smoothly doing like a “rainbow” line. Keeping my elbow straight. But my husbands also noticed its like i push my elbow into my hip (which then my forearm is pointing outwards) as if trying to rlly get more speed vs staying straight and following thru. So that’s probably where it stems from too. But we bowl a little different. Its a mixture of a two hand and one hand ig you can say lol The position of a two hand where we tuck the ball.. but we only do it one hand.. and approach it with normal steps of one hand bowler.
^ I'm tried this multiple times with a 4 step and that second step being the cross over I always end up on the wrong foot... I only found this being benefital if I did my cross over foot being my first step
You addressed individuals that don’t cross over enough in their second step. What about people like myself with big hips who over exaggerate their crossover step?
Is there any videos on proper starting stance. I havent bowled in a long time but want to get back into it. Watching a few of these coaching videos i can tell you my form was not the best. I know i was carrying the ball too far in front of me but am wondering if step size and stance has any correlation with performance cause i tend to lean closer to the ground consentrating on ball placement in line to the arrows on the lane and tend to take tighter slower consentrated steps.
My first step is my right foot. A minor slide. But I am also slowing my feet down. Only way to get the timing correct. Seeing the difference, I now have to teach myself to step with the left foot first.
Depends on how many steps you take. 5 step approach your first step is the opposite foot of your bowling hand. If you take 4 steps the first step is the same foot as your bowling hand.
^ that's my huge confliction with this video because you'd literally have to Cross over on your first step when you go to do the push away... I only found the video being relevant if you did a 5 step
Based on the last video, it seems like it would be a good idea to stop saying "push away" and replace it with "ball drop" or something; might as well get momentum to change the terms we use in the game. I've been (literally) pushing away for who knows how long, and went and practiced your technique right after watching last week's video. It was a little weird, but I think I liked it. I just need to practice it more so it becomes second nature.
I am a right handed bowler and lead with my right foot, how do I get the spine tilt to open the slot for the ball to drop into the slot for the backswing?
Seems like spine tilt to the right isn't very effective unless you also have some significant forward spine tilt, especially if you're opening your shoulders. Just making an observation of better bowlers. Thanks.
I just started bowling as a hobby what about straight bowling as in no hook I can't find any tutorials on straight bowling I'm beginning to learn the hook but my straight is more consistent right now and for my gentemens league I would like to get more strikes as my average is 150
that's is so true overrated the main point is the need to closer to our body to get the leverage power and accuracy. I can related to this and work on this and actually helps in my game a lot thank brad and Kyle I hope there's more videos on approach and basic release
Thanks. Great video. I had a coach that would constantly tell me not to tilt and drop my shoulder. He was very old school and like me to be squared up as well as no tilt. I never listened. The sad thing is his the local high school coach. Really nice guy though
When you guys are demonstrating this... And I watch your 4 step approach... I feel like it's conflicting 🤔...since your 4 step video talks about the initial push off being with your right foot if you are right handed.. so your second step is the left foot... So you'd technically Cross to the right if I'm not mistaken? And when I try to do this example with starting with my left foot first I end up on my right foot at the end of my 4 step... So my main question is this really for a 5 step approach??? Because I've done this multiple times and it doesn't link up with a 4 step unless I were to do the pushaway and Cross step on my first step being that is my right foot... And this is the only way I end up on my slide foot that being my left... So really is this for a 5 step approach???
My main 2 issues are timing and throwing the ball to hard trying to be in control of everything I kinda developed my own screwy way to bowl and it used to work but not anymore and I’m trying to make changes but it’s hard to break the habits and it’s very odd of a feeling
@The_kid01 I tell you this much I’m very frustrated with bowling right now and I don’t know but I’m probably going to take a lot of years off also it’s time to hang it up for a while
How do you two ALWAYS know, week to week, which parts of my game need a video? Were you spying on me at practice last night while I was doing step drills? 😄
I got a question. Is there a reason for different ball weights? Is a heavier bowling ball better than a lighter bowling ball or is a lighter ball better than a heavier ball..??
Think of it this way: if you have two balls that are the same size, but one is made of styrofoam and one is made of steel and you roll them down an incline at the same time, which ball do you think will make it to the bottom faster? The heavier ball is capable of generating more momentum, speed, and force (impact) because of its weight. The most important thing is to throw a ball you can control, so if it needs to be a little lighter to do that then that’s more important! As you improve, you will be able to control a heavier ball.
PUSH AWAY straight! Because it’s a verb phrase. And you even used the two-word verb form in the present continuous tense by saying “pushing away”. You wouldn’t say “pushawaying”, right?
U guys touched on an area that seems ignored...bowling tips for seniors. I would hope ud find time to address sr bowler issues due to physical limitations. So many srs have terrible timing and mechanics. Just the basic four atep timing would make the game so mich more enjoyable for them and less physically taxing.
Hey Brad and Kyle i saw you guys like 4 months ago in reno and you're talking about swinging did you guys try my secret use tour pinky finger and don't put your Birdy finger in a hole you will swing better and release better to
^ thats exactly what I was thinking man because trying to do this with a 4 step and taking the second step as a Cross over you end up on the wrong slide foot... I wish in the video they identified the 4 vs 5 and how it'd be a difference on the Cross over foot
I swear, every time I have a specific issue with my own game (Such as my swing right now) you guys ALWAYS come out with the exact video I need to watch. You two - Brad and Kyle - are easily the best instructive bowling youtubers in the planet!

I glad you addressed us old guys I’m 67 with bad knees and I find that cross over step a bit difficult.
Releasing great videos during my highschool bowling season and I appreciate that!
It’s like a golf video. So much similarity.

Is there any videos on proper starting stance. I havent bowled in a long time but want to get back into it. Watching a few of these coaching videos i can tell you my form was not the best. I am a right handed bowler and lead with my right foot, how do I get the spine tilt to open the slot for the ball to drop into the slot for the backswing?
Have a question for u 2, what could it mean when u don't palm the ball through the swing, ball to heavy, not drilled right?
I desparately needed this lesson. I’ve yet to break 100 bowling since I came back to the sport earlier this year.
I never knew about crossover
@The_kid01 I tell you this much I’m very frustrated with bowling right now and I don’t know but I’m probably going to take a lot of years off also it’s time to hang it up for a while
Call it a fall away!
How do you two ALWAYS know, week to week, which parts of my game need a video? Were you spying on me at practice last night while I was doing step drills? 😄
Amazing isn’t it ?
How many right handed bowlers actually have an issue hitting their right legs on the backswing?
U guys touched on an area that seems ignored...bowling tips for seniors. I would hope ud find time to address sr bowler issues due to physical limitations.
So many srs have terrible timing and mechanics. Just the basic four atep timing would make the game so mich more enjoyable for them and less physically taxing.
What’s the best tip anyone can give a beginner?
Hey Brad and Kyle i saw you guys like 4 months ago in reno and you're talking about swinging did you guys try my secret use tour pinky finger and don't put your Birdy finger in a hole you will swing better and release better to
cant do a crossover at all. i feel like im about to fall over. Im also overweight so i dont know if thats a factor
Sorry off topic I know ... But when and where can I watch bowling on TV... Only Bowltv?
National TV show broadcasts will resume in the next month or so when the tour picks back up!
@@BradandKyleBowl Thank you much I don't bowl as much as I used to now that I am 65... This that on Fox,or fs 1 or only Bowltv
First.
e
Yep I’m 69. Not that flexible
Lefties, reverse it for us
YEAH WE KNOW🤣
Can you show how this applies to a 4 step approach?
Everything should apply the same. With a 5 step approach nothing happens on the first step. So with a 4 step your first step is the crossover step.
^ thats exactly what I was thinking man because trying to do this with a 4 step and taking the second step as a Cross over you end up on the wrong slide foot... I wish in the video they identified the 4 vs 5 and how it'd be a difference on the Cross over foot
