I’ve only just seen this comment. That’s a really good shout. The 990 isn’t a large condenser microphone and the 440 is (I just checked the specs) so it would have been a better comparison.
Listening on Yamaha HS8's and I gotta say from my perspective it's Rode > MXL > AT2020, but it's all very subtle. The AT2020's definitely sound lacking in lower frequencies.
great comment, thank you. I couldn't agree more. The Rode is the more expensive mic so I had a feeling it be great but the MXL was also extremely good considering it's the cheapest.
Rode NT1a conveys overtones better so I think it sounds best. MXL 990 picks up partials but not as many as the Rode. AT2020 misses more than it catches.
1st of all thank god someone can sing and play instead of pod casters and rappers reviewing microphones . Cheers! Lots if factors hard to tell listening through headphones. Was think AT2020 but after listening although again difficult the Rode seemed warmer and better low end for Vocals which is what I'm looking at. Might spend a bit more and buy something higher end but I appreciate your review. thanks.
Thank you. I do love a ride nt1a and it’s what I use for the audio on my videos. There is a jump in quality as you get over £250/$300 though as microphones move away from the combination of a cheap circuit and cheap capsule. My current go to is a MicParts T12 which I built from a lot. You can also buy them pre-assembled. Definitely worth a look
Out of the three I'd go for the MXL purely because they're all very similar, the MXL is the cheapest and does not sound the worst. My personal favorite is the Rode mainly because I'd have several nt1a mics for a very long time so know how to work with them. All three have a very similar circuit inside with very similar capsules. The Rode has the best build quality. MicParts do great capsule upgrades for both the MXL and Rode nt1a but it's also suggested the MXL circuit gets upgraded at the same time. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just shows that you can but an MXL or Rode, use it for a couple of years then easily upgrade the parts and have a pro-level mic for the fraction of the cost.
The Rode sounded slightly better on the vocals. Although I was listening through my phone speakers so not the most reliable source... Will have to give it another listen later through proper speakers. 🔊 I do love a Rode though!
Wonderful insight into all three... although Rode clearly stands out...you can make out with your eyes closed...that punchy bright unmistakable sound unlike the slightly mellowed dulcet of the others
I'd say the AT was a bit tilted toward the higher frequencies, the MXL was a bit tilted towards the lower frequencies, and the Rode was best balanced with the most high and low extension.
I've had one for a while, it sounds alright, but it can sound very mid-y and the high self noise is annoying sometimes. It's a solid mic to start out with.
If we have look at the price, which one would be better for making voice over's? MXL 990 prick ears in high frequences, so we have to use a lot of de esser. But i never have the rode nt1-a and there is the question, will rode be better for voice over than mxl 990? Which one have warmer sound?
I'd say MxL is best for the price. None are what I'd call warm as they all have a high end frequency boost. I'd suggest using an eq on the microphone to tame the high end and bring out the warmth
Yup, but I dont wan't to cut high frequences it will make sound dark and unclear. The second question is about self noise, the rode have 5db A-weighted and MXL have 20db A-weighted. I changed the MXL 990 to Studio Projects B1 - but I dont know why i want to back and buy new mxl 990 - Is there any sense?
@@salteenplayz2402 I also had a 770's, but it's not kind of microphone which I like. Prefer 990's over 770's even if 770 have dB pad and low cut filter. The SPB1 is much warmer mic and have larger capsule. If 990's do not sibilate at high freq. that will be best mic for the price!

We're talking about only Vocals not instruments recording MXL 990 is an groundbreaking Microphone apart from this there is only 00.01% Frequency and Quality difference equal to the Most expensive condensor microphone like neumann U47
For comparison the sensitivity of the mics should be adjusted, otherwise people tend to chose the mic which is the loudest. (Rode>MXL>AT)
I agree. I level matched them but should really have done it using loudness rather than db but at the time I didn't have a loudness meter
Thanks for your answer. It was very helpful anyway!

I liked the rode better than the rest. Thanx for the elaborate review. I could compare everything i wanted here! Cheers!!
Thank you. The Rode is my favorite
990 warmer. NT1a more presence and AT2020 lacks both, warmth and presence. I choose the 990 first, then the NT1a.
Rode NT1a conveys overtones better so I think it sounds best. MXL 990 picks up partials but not as many as the Rode. AT2020 misses more than it catches.

linear mics are the better condensator - the rode isnt real warm... its patched and crapi for vocal mixing. the at is much better.
