I hate the idea of an international draft. Why should a team like the pirates, As or Marlins essentially get 2 top picks in drafts for sucking and not spending money. I see that as just another incentive to not spend. Let’s not reward mediocrity
The caps on international free agent spending pools kind of serves as a de facto auction draft, one where the lowest spenders start with a great pool of funds. While I like sporting parity, and think it works in most of the pro sports leagues in the US, MLB has a system that has simply created a welfare state for about one-third of the league where they have no interest in trying to win or even trying to get people into their ballpark unless the local or state government builds them a brand spanking new stadium (even then the spending has tended to subside after a year or two). I just don't understand how when the Bucks get Giannis, Magic get Paolo, or Timberwolves get Ant Edwards, their owners open their wallet to try to get a winner. No matter who the Pirates, Rays, Marlins, A's, etc. draft or sign from Latin America, those owners will not spend as much as they get from revenue sharing.
I agree. There’s also the other side that it helps benefit an organization that is genuinely trying but can’t compete with bigger markets - but typically it’s the cheap organizations that are just badly ran.
Ohtani obviously spoke to Yamamoto and Sasaki before they became free agent. I’m from Japan myself. Also Japan’s one of the richest trading companies, Dentsu is connected to the Dodgers. Those guys are already determined to play for the LAD. Is that even legal?
During the first 5 days of free agency players can't talk to anyone. Before or after that all players can talk to one another. There is no rule stopping anyone from talking to someone before and after.
Skenes and Gil were the the two logical choices, particularly the former. He said it himself: historic. Don't overthink it, Ken. As for Soto, you have the wealthiest owner vs. the wealthiest team. The former doesn't have any business constraints, so that's why I also think Soto-to-the-Mets is the likely spot, but Soto has a say here. His likely preference is the Yankees, but that preference can be bought out by the Mets, yet a player getting the highest contract doesn't preclude going to his preferred destination. That was the Gerrit Cole scenario. In the end, the Yankees and Mets can have the two highest bids, with the Mets the highest, but Soto simply has to tell Boras that he wants to return to the Yankees, then ask the Yankees to match. I'd still bet on the Mets here, but Soto's potential preference is being ignored in the equation.
I can agree with the international draft. It would be the final sport to do it. Personally, I think anything that might make low market teams actually try to compete would be good... right now, too many just don't even try.
One of the reasosn why the international draft was not instituted the last time they tried was because now in average international signings are about 1,200 players a year and MLB wanted to cap it at 600 players and that was a non starting point for the union.
If there is a international draft who is going to pay to develop these kids from age 12 to 16. All these MLB teams would close up their camps and move away. It’s not good for them long-term
He’s staying with the Yankees if the Yankees choose to match 95% of what any other team offers. Idk why Yankees fans are worried. If Hal wants to keep him, they keep him. Only worrisome thing is that an injury occurs during this monstrous contract and makes Soto lose significant time during any season.
Would love to see a press conference at winter meetings with boras, Stearns and Cohen saying there’s deals for Soto, Alonso, Snell and Manea. Make the this years winter meetings memorable.
