If you feel the urge to rub your eyes frequently or if your voice is turning hoarse mid-speech, you can thank the present air for it. It's the same scenario year after year. And it strikes like a clockwork, both in terms of the time of arrival and the impact (aqi always breaches the "severe" category mark) and yet nothing changes except for 20-25 days of annual hue and cry. Btw, we use watered-down version of aqi (NAQI) from that of the western standards (such as: US-EPA). We're already working on a compromised normal. Because apparently when too many people imply "it's okay, chalta hai" to unacceptable things, they become normal. That's how quality of life comes down eventually. The effects of these things surface gradually and the fact that most people have the memory of a goldfish, all is forgotten too soon. This is reflected from the trend of people increasingly willing to shell out extra in the name of getting "pure/organic/chemically untreated" edibles from the market as if purity should be a trait of luxury? Anyway, I just recently read in the newspaper that DPCC chairman refused to give a go ahead to a study by IIT-D to gauge real time sources of pollution in the city. On the other ahead, expensive but not very efficient smog towers are lying defunct in central Delhi. Wonder whether consultations were made with the field experts for this project or not. Straw burning from Punjab and Haryana has become more of a mayhem in recent years because this particular agri cycle has been shifted to Oct-Nov by farmers due to groundwater issues in pre-monsoon season. If govt. had the political will or intent, it could've provided some incentives to promote mechanised disposal of straw or linked MSP to straw procurement from farmers but apparently that won't turn out to be a vote magnet like the electricity freebie. So the truth is, the population at large is also to be blamed for it. But the bigger truth is, there's a larger section of voting population that would choose these freebies over long term solutions for matters such as this. The demographic diversity is such. This, coupled with the fact that the NCR region is a densely populated urban island with several manufacturing industries operating in its satellite cities only add to the problem. But unfortunately the perils are borne by everyone. This makes clean air a luxury in this part of the country. Politicians will always reach for low hanging fruits (short term solutions like GRAP measures) instead of study backed long term solutions that require dedicated investment or best practices which are sustainable year round and also effective rather than disruptive decrees like odd-even rule, or half-hearted measures like closing schools for children upto 5th std. Until the better part of the population becomes functional enough to both demand things with a vision and be vociferous enough to let the public representatives know of the same, citizens will just remain a number...a statistic for the electorate. And this fact cuts across party lines so there's no politics here. But the irony is that once we become functional enough on that level, we buy air purifiers for our home, stay put ('coz now many of us can work from our homes or if not, then work in AC offices), order things from q-commerce and get along with our cocooned lives. Now we don't have time for the political sh*tshow. But the show goes on...because the show always goes on : )
I think it will help if Delhi completely ban fossil fuels cars and bikes and introduce electric car and bike with chargering station in all places insted of petrol pump and ban the fire crackers also and change to solar system insted
Thank you Delhi for waking up after you have become an international joke!!
I think its high time to move the capital and stop factories
Its time to rely on public transportation. i think.
Sever action needed to be taken against Punjab farmers 😡😡😡😡
In that case you have to go to Pakistan's Punjab!
Develop Gwalior, Jaipur as alternative to Delhi NCR region as economic hubs and decongest NCR.
decentralise development!
Gwalior and Jaipur will share the same fate then
ye konse desh ka accent h?
