Planting our our new Hay Field with a custom Grass Mix

  • Today I am finally planting our new Hay Field. The field will mostly be grass hay. We are planting orchard grass, meadow fescue, Timothy, and medium red clover. We are going to use a 3 point broadcast spreader to distribute the grass seed on the hay field. Then we are going to use a cultipacker to roll over the field and press the seed into the soil.

    in the uk we call that a cambrige roller

  • @ronaldlee2376
    @ronaldlee2376 3 года назад

    Glad you used cultipacker, this what i use for this purpose. Packer compresses soil to bond seed & grooves accept heavy deluge of rain water & hold soil. Roller is smooth & seed tends to stick to it. Roller makes ground like a paved parking lot. In heavy rain no ridges to slow the erosion of soil/seed. then a redo for part or all of field. I cringed when you mentioned Timothy seed as this was raised to feed horses only, If one stem reaches maturity it is like wire, it punctures and kill cattle. Never let it get that high. Also Timothy pulls from the soil, does not add or amend. Seed germination is 7-10 days. You will be tempted to harvest in late October if weather cooperates in growth, but strongly suggest you resist until next May.
