- Dan Ives, Wedbush Securities managing director, joins 'Squawk on the Street' to discuss why Dan Ives still has an outperform rating for Tesla, what turnaround needs to happen, and what Ives bases his hope with Tesla on.
Biggest lesson i learnt in 2023 in the Tesla stock market is that nobody knows what is going to happen next, so practice some humility and follow a strategy with a long term edge.
Nobody knows anything; You need to create your own process, manage risk, and stick to the plan, through thick or thin, While also continuously learning from mistakes and improving.
Uncertainty... it took me 5 years to stop trying to predict what bout to happen in market based on charts studying, cause you never know. not having a mentor cost me 5 years of pain I learn to go we’re the market is wanting to go and keep it simple with discipline.

Just tested the full self drive on a free trial. It’s like living in the future! If Tesla can get through the next 2-3 tumultuous years this company will be worth 10x maybe 50x?!. Truly remarkable company and technology!!
that's what I thought, people who haven't tried it just don't know. I thought it would take another 10 years for it to work but it's working like 90% now. People will switch in and out of FSD like driving manual, pretty much anything slow and predictable works. Only in fast situations it struggles like getting out of carpool lane and swtiching 3 lanes within half a mile. It needs to speed up instead of slow down when people won't let you in. With that being said, it already blows my mind that we got to experience this technology in our life time
Google's Waymo has a far superior FSD than Tesla. The Government rates Google FSD at level 4 autonomy while Tesla's FSD is stuck at level 2 for the past several years. So by your logic, when will google stock 50x?

@@walden6272 It is like iPhone and app store. It is easy for apple to push apps to the iPhone and people using it. Tesla FSD people can start using it. Google Waymo has to make the entire ecosystem to come close to Tesla. Tesla did the hard part first and now pushing the software will be incremental. Don't you think within 2 years it will reach easy level 4. Waymo can reach level 6 but for what?

Ives has to be the biggest Tesla stan on wall street. Never fails.
Dan Ives predicted after only two price cuts last year that Tesla is done with price cuts and margins will stabilize. Since then, they cut prices in China 5 times and gave additional incentives equaling 3% of the sales price, cut prices in Europe 5 times, cut prices in US 4 times, gave $1000 off Model Y price in March and gave inventory discounts ranging from 2K-5K, in some cases 7K for Model Y!
He is a perma bull who could care less about telling the facts as they are about Tesla's end of growth (not slowed down growth) and complete collapse of margins. His price target of $315 is now 200 times 2024 earnings. Still Cnbc keeps on giving him airtime and the financial media keeps on quoting him as if he is the source of truth on Tesla.

There is a demand issue in China so Tesla sales are down. But even so Tesla sales tops Byd.. Even so Tesla is not simply EV cars, we need to consider what is the value of FSD. Can we speak of any company aside from Tesla that has a working FSD? I think it is FSD that differentiates from a traditional automaker.

@@markplott4820 what explains 6% fewer sales in January and February (combined) in China? What explains 23% production cut since early March? What explains price cut in January (7th China price cut) and incentives equal to 3% of sales price in March? I assume Tesla did all this because there is a serious demand issue. Maybe I am wrong.
The largest part of Ives' holdings are ETFs. I wonder if Buffet, Ackman, or Griffin's holdings are ETFs too? Surely this is what defines a market leader.

It’s about the engineering and technology. Teslas should crush IC cars on charge distance and maintenance cost. They already do on acceleration and computerization and trunk space. Consumer will realize it when it happens in 1 second. Necessary chargers will follow in a year. Nothing but engineering and technology.
BYD's total sales are up YOY for this quarter. BYD's BEV only sales are up YOY for this quarter.
Sales are up by cutting rates. But for how long they will cut price? They will have to turn profitable and would need money for next incremental innovation. Just selling cheap won't help them in long term.

Elon needs the model 2 now for under $22,000 USD. Consumer spending is weak, and everyone this year is looking to stretch their dollars.
Luxury spending won't recover until end of 2025.
Car makers get hammererd in recessions, luxury ones even more. Add in the inevitability of a costly recall at some point and people will see theor margins look like GM and Fors etc. At that point, it wil be hard to see it priced at even $50

I don’t understand the talk around FSD/autonomous. Why do we want this? Why do we want the car to drive itself? What’s the benefit? Who would trust it?
Tesla is still the king of the hill for EV in America due to the protectionism, but not true elsewhere. The products are the issues, at least in China, basically the same products for years where in the biggest EV market of the world, people wants to see a refresh almost every year.

I have said this for a long time. This stock is uninvestable. I am glad I sold 95% of my shares two years ago. At one point I had $250k in the junk. Now less than $10k.

Biggest EV market is where gas price is significantly higher and people dont drive much, that is outside USA. Musk needs to pay attention to those countries.

Tesla needs to adapt its autonomous driving technology to autos with internal combustion engines. The infrastructure to support EVs does not currently exist in this country and it wont for decades, if ever.
