  • We visit the spot where Spahn Ranch stuntman, cowboy actor and ranch hand Donald “Shorty” Shea was murdered on August 26,1969 becoming the ninth and final victim of the Manson family. His body was found eight years later in close proximity to the murder site.

It makes me so sad that he was murdered so savagely and alone. The fact that Clem, even though he led them to his remains, was allowed to just walk free...

I'm just reading an excellent and well-researched book by reporter Tom O'Neill entitled Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA and the secret history of the 60s. I recommend it.

There are several books written by Dave McGowen about this era. Author Peter Levinda wrote a series called "Sinister Forces"
About his investigation into Manson, and that era. You can find podcasts on the "NightFright" channel w.Brent Holland...
He has several interviews with authors who've penned books of similar interests and era...

I read the Manson murders by persecutor Bugliowski, how do those ones compare as I've since heard that book was a biased account

Tex Watson still hasn't admitted to his role in this awful murder. And what of Bill Vance and the others involved??

As far as hearing him, I know for a fact she might have. It was not that far, and sound does travel in that canyon. There was no traffic, or cars back then. If he was screaming he could have been heard.

*"Around the end of August 1969, Charles "Tex" Watson, Bruce Davis, Steve Grogan, Bill Vance, Larry Bailey, and Charles Manson grabbed Shea and forced him into their car. Shoved into the back seat, Shea had no quick escape. Grogan was first to attack and Tex quickly joined in. While Grogan hit Shea over the head with a pipe wrench, Tex stabbed Shea repeatedly. Somehow Shea managed to stay alive and was alert when the group pulled him from the car and dragged him down a hill behind Spahn Ranch, where they then stabbed him to death."*

Where are you Sir? A mile from the ranch? What? Befuddling for someone to delve into deep research about and make the effort to drive out there but left out one small detail? WHERE THE HECK ARE YA

If you drive on the road about 1 mile from where you jump down to walk where the ranch was, going toward topanga, there is a turn off. You can pull over and look just past the tree. You an see the water drain. That is where they buried him. Some say the killed in there, some say it was a bit closer off a trail. You have to remember at the time all the roads were mostly dirt. The fwy was not there yet. 118 get off at Rocky peak, and get on SSP.

I have a surprize for you they definitely could have heard the screams and a mile and a half is nothing in a quiet area up in the hills like that. I hike in remote areas my entire life even now and I assure you that sounds can travel great distances up and down canyons such as you can hear a dog barking at a farmhouse several miles off. it depends on the situation and setting but the "girls" and others did start to run back of into the city because they heard it and thought "How do I not know I may be next?" the other killings had already taken place and in the heat they would have been outside not in the hot rooms of the ranch and they most certainly heard the screams. he also had his head chopped off.

do you realize how short of a distance it is in the country to hear a person screaming little more than a mile away? you have never lived in the country thats for sure

I’m not challenging your assertions about the noises traveling in the canyons (I live in a big city and even here it is interesting how sometimes certain noises coming from blocks away can sound like they are right outside my window). However it is not true that Shorty’s head was cut off. That was only a rumor, possibly started to scare the others in the group into obedience.
