Thanks for explaining this i kinda knew there was some kinda meaning to it i just couldn't put my finger on it. Artful meaning to an artful song, with an artful video i love it.
Beyond just the commentary on the way social media distorts reality, the song to me very much so carries the theme that the changes we make to our bodies as trans people do not make us any less authentic and instead bring us closer to who we truly are. This is most clearly shown by the lines "I'm real when I shop my face So you must be the one That I've seen in my dreams."

Sophie died at around 04:00 local time on 30 January 2021, aged 34, at Attikon University Hospital in Athens, Greece, following an accidental fall from a balcony. A senior official in the Athens Police confirmed that the artist fell from the rooftop of a three-storey building while attempting to take a photograph of the full moon. Sophie's girlfriend said that "it took the police and fire brigade around 90 minutes to get [Sophie] out" before their arrival to the hospital where Sophie died. Many artists, including Rihanna, Sam Smith, Vince Staples, Charli XCX, A. G. Cook, cupcakKe, and Christine and the Queens, expressed condolences.
Why the fuck did it take 90 minutes? I heard it was hard to get to her because she fell in a parking lot, but still, how is it hard to get into a parking lot??? If there isn’t a clear explanation then it’s giving Diana level of fishiness
@@l.gaga5508it could due to the paramedics suspecting a neck injury, which is common after a fall of such severity. Moving her would’ve paralyzed or killed her, so they tried to be careful, maybe too careful, unfortunately
I want to be clear and say I'm not making an edgy joke, but this has been worrying me since I found out. Do we know it was an accident? It feels very.... I'd hate to think she would hurt herself, but ..... Did she? I have to ask.... 🙁
I used to think this was SOPHIE’s critique of artificiality and the sheer silliness of plastic surgery, and perhaps that’s still a valid lens through which to see this song, but I recently changed my view. I get the feeling that Faceshopping is really about the importance of reclaiming one’s right to transform oneself, from physical modifications or to abstract re-orientations of the self. See, us people who don’t fit into society’s categories of what is normal have always been chastised for not following the mold; as if our very existence is a violation, something incorrect and deplorable. Maybe Faceshopping isn’t about “plastic surgery bad and shallow!” But maybe SOPHIE wanted to take out the moral burdens associated with changing our bodies, and instead show there’s an overlooked empowerment angle to being able to decide how you want your body to be, (my face is the front of shop), how you want it to be seen (my face is the real shop front), and have your body, including its adjustments (my shop is the face I front) to be accepted as valid (I’m real when I shop my face), despite how people around you view plastic surgery.
It’s not just empowerment, the whole vibe of the song is her portraying herself as a mad scientist, demonstrating how much power and utter control she has over the human form. If frankenstein is what a mortal scientist could make, then SOPHIE’s form is what a god can create.
I agree. I've always seen this as the line between personal interest, making the brand, and fitting into the world. Many trans folk are against plastic surgery because they feel it leaves both the cis and trans people who don't fit into the "acceptable" bone structure in the dust. If you can just reface yourself, what's there to natural beauty either? But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the only beholder that _should_ matter (even if it feels like it isn't) is you. "I'm real when I shop my face" is a personal expression to me. But that's my interpretation.
Great start! Next you’ll realize that she’s speaking on the commodification of beauty. You can manufacture and purchase beauty to then use to sell products (my face is the real shop front). Think Kylie Jenner. Especially knowing SOPHIE’s other work and interviews, you will see that she’s embracing the culture of consumerism. Her album arts are all done in the style of white-background amazon product photos. It’s not irony or satire... it’s honest and subversive.
there really is no other song like this. the immense punch of the beat and that metallic almost beast like synth is so fucking impressive. clearly a lot of work went into the sound design on this track and it should really be appreciated more
Yeah Right by Vince staples sounds a lot like this, probably because it is produced by SOPHIE as well It's basically just Vince & Kendrick rapping over this beat
the oddist Oddish: You're the only one who understands electronic music. Electronic music is all about and has always been about the lyrics. Without lyrics there would not be electronic music.
Mike Buchanan Yeah exctly. Every music is about lyrics in fact. That's why they made classical music without lyrics back in the day because people used to be stupider and unmusical.
She truly elevated music to unimaginable heights. She inspired me personally to pursue music production with her cinematic production and I’m devastated to hear of her passing. She will live on forever in our hearts and in the melodies she composed💖

No, best not to pull on that thread. Keep it simple, use name designation strictly for generational cohorts, enough of this "state of mind" bollocks.
i might be stating the obvious but i love the way she mixes up the words face, shop, front and real is as if to say that we’re blurring the lines between what is a front and what is real, or what is “shopped” or what is an actual face. i think my high school english teachers would be proud :’)

Beyond just the commentary on the way social media distorts reality, the song to me very much so carries the theme that the changes we make to our bodies as trans people do not make us any less authentic and instead bring us closer to who we truly are.

@Sasha_Uchyonova others don't. Not everything is about you. I found this very interesting.

BYE-
excuse me?
@@nigelthornberry5375 Love that
@@GuiSmith this thread reminds me of an interview she did for billboard where she was quoted as saying "transness is about taking control"
