I’m gonna be honest. Even though for basically every scene Argyle is in, he is high or being stupid. He really carried the entire California group. He found the tire tracks that led them to El. And he saw the surfer boy pizza place and used the fridge for El.
I LOVED this about him. Even if he's almost always high or oblivious he was still useful to the group. I adore the way the writers handled his character and his eccentricity.

What he brings to the dynamic is a classic cornerstone of the genre and as much as he's comic relief he also acts as a straight man against the backdrop of a fantastically horrifying world. Stoners are a normal occurence, dead bodies secret agents psychic powers and the plane of shadows/gates to hell are not. In this way he is an audience surrogate, he is the new dude brought into the fold on the stranger things happening in hawkins. Plus maybe the pizza place will franchise, who knows. They're coming for domino's, y'know...
How Heaton didn't crack up every single time Eduardo presented his"weeder" causing 300x takes I will never know. Also I say "brochachos" all the time now because Argyle's high rubbed off on me.

I always felt a little bad for Argyle while they're burying the body of the agent. Like he's just been thrown into this and Johnathan had a good idea by telling him to go smoke. It would calm him down immensely. Kinda hate it that they get mad at him smoking at that point but it's also a good way to show how desensitized the group has come to death, corpses, etc.
When they called Argyle while they were under house arrest, I got it into my head he was going to sneak some weed into their pizza and they'd slip out once the guards got stoned. I was sort of disappointed we got a gunfight instead.
