He was a deadly striker and assassin back in the day, and in the attempt to round off his game, they inadvertently knocked off every edge he had. It's depressing as fuck to see him on the downswing, but he shifted too far from what brought him there in the first place. That's the stark difference between him and Pereira: nobody tried to CHANGE what makes Pereira work. He's a deadly striker/kickboxer, he leans into that role hard as fuck, and he usually dominates. Post Gastelum, Izzy's team has been floundering trying to make him a 5 round "going the distance" fighter instead of just letting him do what he DOES and just knock people the fuck out and he's been on a downward trajectory ever since. The Strickland fight completely broke him and he probably would have won if he just stuck to what he does BEST (and didn't let Sean into his head. Don't fiddle with dog balls, ladies and gents). Shouldawoulda...here we are, and it sucks seeing him like this. Loyalty is a noble trait but it can really ream you up the ass sometimes.

In reality Izzy has always been one dimensional and fought the exact same way every time. He never had a plan B. If his opponents didn't overcommit and give him exactly what he wanted then it was a boring uneventful fight or they beat him.

My girlfriend trained at the same gym as him many years back when he was first starting to become widely known in MMA and she said he's the nicest guy. He was always willing to help out with the boxing classes and was very engaged with the students making sure their technique was on point.

It was a bummer to see Izzy and Pyfer get matched. Ive been a fan Izzy since his debut and I’ve been rooting for Pyfer to climb the rankings . Izzy needed that won waaaay more then Pyfer did. It’s bitter sweet
