Dianne, I took used canvas off of a few 8x10 frames. I gessoed new ones, then stretched the new ones on the frame. I had a terrible time with the staples not going into the wood. Made a mess removing staples and re doing the process. Now I see I should have put the staples on the sides instead of stretching the canvas around to the back. Also I was not successful with achieving a completely tight canvas. Thanks for the tip.

Candace, it is possible to staple on the back, but requires lot of excess canvas to get a good grip. When doing this, just as when stapling on the sides, the key to getting it tight is to use canvas pliers with alternating sides as you move along.

Hello Dianne! Thank you so much for all the wonderful information you share! Quick question- do you ever glue your finished paintings to panels permanently instead of stretching? If so how do you do this? (hopefully this isn't already answered somewhere I did search!) :)

No, Tanya. That's not something I do because the painting needs to be able to expand and contract during the long time it takes for the oil to cure.

One more question. Is it best to gesso raw canvas before you stretch or gesso before stretching? I also watched your other tip on gesso, using the rock to sand. Love the rock method.

Candace, if you're using raw canvas, it is best to stretch first, then gesso. And one hint here, when using raw canvas, always use acrylic gesso when applying directly to the canvas. When using oil based gesso, the raw canvas first should be sealed with something like rabbit skin glue.

I think you can also use gac100 by golden in place of skin glue

Can this be done with canvas that has been painted with acrylic?
