Hey Madison, I'm sure you realize you've seen some of these folks before... The Abilene Kid (Harry Carey, Jr.) was Sheriff Fred White who was killed by Curly Bill in Tombstone, and Brad Jorgenson in The Searchers. And Sheriff Buck Sweet (Ward Bond) was Bert the cop in It's A Wonderful Life, Pat Wheeler in Rio Bravo, and Rev. Clayton in The Searchers. Deputy Curly (Hank Worden) was Mose in The Searchers.
Acting was really good. I really liked the JW delirium scene and the ghosts of William and Pete and finding the mule and burro. Very good acting.
A very overlooked John Wayne western. Thanks for a great reaction. Would love your reaction to The Cowboys, The Shootist and also another overlooked Wayne movie, Legend of the Lost.
It is good to see the ensemble cast of THE SEARCHERS, ten years younger.
The 3 Godfathers was filmed (although not set) primarily in Death Valley, California. The original 3 Men and a Baby... filmed (although not set) primarily in Death Valley, California. This is the original Three Men and a Baby...lol
Charlton Heston's fantastic Western "Will Penny" has scenes with Christmas in it. Not to be missed!
I've always liked Pedro Armendáriz in everything he's ever done, including his last role. He found out he had cancer during the production of James Bond "From Russia With Love" (1963). The schedule of production was altered so he could finish his scenes in a timely fashion. He wanted to finish the movie so his family could receive his salary. From Russia With Love was released eleven months after his passing.
Unlike the nonsense about Die Hard being a Christmas movie this movie actually tried to install a Christmas message in the movie. A mere setting (such as in Die Hard) is not the same as a message (such as in this movie). Happy Holidays!
The Reins on the Mule that Hank Worden was pulling on in the scene where loading them on the train, the reins were “rigged” to pull backwards for comedic effect. Hank Worden was an Actor who could actually handle a horse…Watch, “Fort Apache” 1948, with John Wayne, Henry Fonda, and Hank Worden. He plays a Private in a scene with Pedro Admendariz. Worden was raised on a cattle ranch near Glendive, Montana. He was an expert Horseman who rode in Rodeos as a Saddle Bronc rider. In a scene with animals, you need an expert. Actress Billie Burke (Glenda the Good Witch) got him his start in films. Another little known film “The Northwest Mounted Police” 1940 with Gary Cooper. Thanks!
Sheriff Sweet (Ward Bond) was in Fort Apache too.
@@bossfan49 And The Searchers.
@@Madbandit77 Yep, that's another one with all three. Bond and Wayne were in about 20 movies together. I just mentioned Fort Apache because the OP mentioned it.
And a late thought Miss Madison. TCM plays “Star In The Night,” 1945. A small story, set in the Western Desert during the 1940’s. Truly a Short (30 minute running time). The tragic Actress Lynn Baggett plays Maria.
As a lifelong John Wayne fan, I didn't see this until a few years ago. What a wonderful surprise it was. Thank you, Madison.
Great western! Been awhile since I've seen this movie! I still enjoy watching. Great reaction Madison you are really picking some winners. Watch the orginal 3:10 to Yuma, then the remake. Luv ya Madison ❤💛
I’ve seen the 3:10 to Yuma remake but haven’t watched the original. It’s on my list!
Great reaction, Madison. Somehow, I knew this was the movie you chose when you mentioned last week you would be watching a Christmas Western. I hadn’t seen this movie since I was young, so I didn’t remember the details of the plot. Plus, I got it confused with another movie, We’re No Angels, starring Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Rey as three escaped convicts who end up doing the right thing. That might we worth a look sometime down the road.
This movie has become a Christmas tradition for me,I put it next to the "Christmas Carol" viewing wise and each I watch it at least three ( a week before, Christmas Eve and Christmas day). Thanks for sharing. Nice reaction.
This was one of my father’s favorite John Wayne movies. In the ancient era of antenna TV before VHS I remember him letting me stay up one night to watch it with him, and him tearing up a bit near the end. Still he said that he thought he preferred the original movie he’d seen as a child. It turns out there were a couple of movies made off of Peter Kyne’s 1913 novel of the same name, and dad was referring to one made in 1936 directed by Richard Boleslawski. Two other silent versions had been made in the 1910’s, the second of which was directed by John Ford and starred Harry Carey (Senior). That movie was a silent film called “Marked Men”, and is now considered lost. When Harry Carey died in 1947, John Ford decided to remake the film with John Wayne, and put his son, Harry Carey Jr., in as a tribute to his old friend.
One very sad note is that Pedro Armendariz (Pedro) died in a manner similar to his own death in this movie when he found he had some sort of cancer, and that news would have been fresh on my father’s mind when we watched it on TV.
One funny anecdote to end on. I was once at Blockbusters (remember those stores, maybe?) looking at the slipcover for the 1971 movie, “The Last Picture Show”. In the blurb it mentioned that Ben Johnson had been in “The Godfather”, “The Godfather Part 2”, and “The Godfather Part 3”. I knew this was wrong. But then it hit me. He had a small part in this movie, “The 3 Godfathers”. Some copyist must have heard about that and erroneously assumed that meant the three “Godfathers”.
I’m glad you found this little gem of a movie; it was a delight to watch it alongside you, intuiting in advance how the story would affect you (even as it did me), all the while allowing me to recall a flood of good memories with my old dad.
Happy New Year, and keep up the good work.
Those are the Sierras, aka the "high sierras"..Mt Whitney is probably one of those snow covered mountains, shot from the Owens Valley. The lower hills are the Alabama Hills, where many old western movies were shot. The rest of the movie was made in Death Valley, to the east.
My dad took us to see this movie at the drive in near our house, around 1958 or 59, when I was 7 or 8 years old. It was my favorite movie for a long time. That picture of the poor, lost men, climbing overthe dunes to the tune of _Streets of Laredo,_ really spoke to me. That's the main way it connects to Jesus Christ and Christmas: the kindness and grace of God toward sinners, men who have done wrong and know they have, and regret it.
Thank you for watching and showing this beautiful movie. Merry Christmas
Madison, have you seen The Westerner, 1940 with Gary Cooper? It's an underrated western that most people have never even heard of, but it's so good!
Agree!!!! The Westerner (1940) is a great film. Walter Brennan won his third Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Judge Roy Bean.
The Westerner is my favorite Cooper Wester (even over High Noon.) The byplay between Cooper vand Brennan is both funny and touching. Best depictiion of Judge Roy Bean, I think.
I've always thought that this was one of the DUKE'S best acting jobs. Not the best but in the top 10. GOD BLESS ALL HERE!!!!!!
*_Buck The Sheriff_* was played by Ward Bond who also played *_Bert The Cop_* in It's a Wonderful Life.
As one of your viewers who recommended both "Die Hard" and this movie, I cannot thank you enough for your reactions. You really do have a good channel here. Somebody else recommended "We're No Angels", a Humphrey Bogart Christmas movie which is both gangster and very very funny. You can save it for next year if you want, but it also is really a hidden gem. Happy New Year, Madison.
😎My favorite John Wayne film! Another niche gem of a western involving a child is the 1951 film "Rawhide" starring Tyrone Power and Susan Hayward ,.a mother and her daughter along with an outpost station master are held hostage by fugitive outlaws and when her baby is threatened the mother fights back! A great film , in my top 5 favorite Westerns list!
Hi Madison, the movie production took place in the Owens Valley and nearby Death Valley in California. The snowey mountains in the background are the Sierra Nevada mountains. The lake where the Abilene Kid thought he saw water was the dried up Owens Lake...that's dried up, because of the water being diverted from the Owens River to Los Angeles via the California Aqueduct. As always, I love your reactions, and this reaction to one of my favorite, and watched every Christmas, movie The Three Godfathers. Wishing you the best Madison in 2024.
Harry Carey Jr. who played the Kid in this film also played the old sherif who gets shot out in the street in Tombstone.
Madison....I would like to recommend the 1972 John Wayne movie called "The Cowboys"....I think you would love it very much....such a great story.
Happy New Year, Madison. Always loved this film. There were a few earlier, grittier versions of this same story by Peter B. Kyne. The mid-thirties version with Charles Bickford is a favorite of mine because one of the three "godfathers" is not so keen about putting the child's safety first, which creates a little extra tension. Harry Carey Jr. made his debut in this picture. Wayne idolized Carey Sr., who died just before the film was released.
Junior's first credited role was in Rolling Home (1946).
The mother is the hreat Mildred Natwick. She and Ward Bond were part of John Fords troupe, as was Harry Carey Jr.
It’s hard to go wrong with a John Ford/John Wayne western…
If you’re looking for another hidden gem western, you should react to the John Ford directed movie, “Sargent Rutledge”. The movie stars Jeffrey Hunter (The Searchers) and Woody Strode (Spartacus).
I highly recommend it…👍🏼😊
I love Sergeant Rutledge because it's one of the few honest films that came out during Hollywood's Golden Age that deals with racism on a honest level.
Sergeant Rutledge is brilliant, one of Ford's best later films. Criminally overlooked and underrated, probably because it didn't have any major stars in the leading roles.
I loved your reaction to this, I haven't seen this since I was a child, it's excellent to see it again. Madison, I hope that you and your loved ones have a great New Year's Eve, and that 2024 brings you all that your hearts desire. Take care and much love from the U.K. By the way you look lovely tonight.
I love this movie so much!!! Can't wait to see you react to it!!
Also I'm the one that emailed you the other day about your book! I have ordered it and am awaiting its arrival 🥰 I'm so excited to read it!
Hey, thanks for reading Gone Outlaw! I hope you enjoy it!😊
You should see Tokyo Godfathers, it's an animated film slightly inspired by John Ford's, it's one of my favorite Christmas movies.
the look when they saw the bag lol
The opening dedication to Harry Carey, Sr. Includes the silhouette of of horse and rider against a night time western sky. The rider is Cliff Lyons who often stunt doubled for Sr., and the horse was Sr.'s favorite, Sonny.
Glad that you enjoyed it. I thought you'd like it. The cinematography is outstanding and I think the sound design and score were top notch. Especially liked how when they were crossing the desert floor you could hear their boots scraping the surface. For some reason, that particular sound has stayed with me ever since I first saw the film. The baby is played by a little girl named Amelia Yelda. Lots of little things to enjoy. And of course, seeing the members of the "John Ford Stock Co." In action together is always a treat!
You totally got the point of this underappreciated movie with all the Ford players.
ahhhhh!,winton c hochs beautiful technicolor photography
Even when Duke plays a bad guy he’s still better than most. These days at least.
Merry Christmas, ma’am. 🤠
Remade in 1985 as the French movie "3 Hommes et un Couffin" ("Three Men and a Cradle"), which in turn was copied by Hollywood in 1987 as "Three Men and a Baby".
Your point about his friends following him through the canyon is very interesting. I would have been inclined to think he was hallucinating but the alternative is so much cooler. Think about the kind of supernatural tales you’d hear out of the American west. The idea of three men sworn to deliver an orphaned child to his kin and two of them dying along the way only to accompany the third as shades in order to fulfill their oaths to the mother… it has that eerie quality you get from stories from the British isles mingled with Native American folklore all mutated into one. Whatever you feel about how this country ended up the way it is, that’s the kind of story you find when you look into early American folklore.
A good movie, with a fun reaction and a lovely dress.
First time I ever heard of this movie ,I thought I had seen all of the John Wayne movies . Thank you
A couple more recent westerns…
Tom Selleck in Crossfire trail and Monte Walsh
You should react to Lonely are the brave Kirk Douglas ✌️❤️
This is still one of my mother's favorite movies. Her love of John Wayne was passed down to me. While this isn't at the top of my list of his movies, it's a great one.
And I love the dress you wore in this video!
I love this movie. It was just on tv here this past week. My nephew was watching it and I just had to look at the screen to know which John Wayne movie it was.
You’ll like it, the Classic “Three Men and a Baby Story.”
Really enjoy your reactions and discussions, Madison! This was a very sweet surprise for a very underrated Wayne classic. I hope you can do more of his work; so many! Happy New Year!!!!
I hope more people will discover this movie.
Hondo, Destry Rides Again (the James Stewart version, not the inferior remake, and The Ride Back are a couple of relatively offbeat Westerns to explore. And anything with Glenn Ford (3:10 To Yuma, Jubal and The Fastest Gun Alive.)
Love the way your channel is a mixture of different movies that are both from yesteryear and contemporary. John Ford directing, starring John Wayne. Classic western genre.
a wonderful western to watch is Westward the Women (1951)
But it isnt on video for streaming, or on DVDs! The people who love this movie should request a version we can see.
This movie has been remade several times. Do yourself a favor and check out the 1936 version, "Three Godfathers." I highly recommend it.
Great movie Madison... It's been decades since i last watched this classic ! Thank you ✌️🙂
"Adios, compañero".
I am so glad you are such a wholesome young lady. Sounds like you may be a Christian also. So glad to find a young person who doesn’t have a filthy mouth.. you are a breath of fresh air. God Bless You.
You would like Cassie, too (Popcorn In Bed) or Addie Counts. (both reactors)
They don’t have to change the rule about not coming back to the town. He would’ve had his sentence suspended if he’d sign a promise to never return, however, he turned it down, which the judge applauded, meaning that he could come back after a sentence was completed, which the judge reduced to one year.
Thank you this is my favorite Christmas movie. So good it’s been done at least four times that I know of but this is the best.
Spotted at least 4 actors that will appear in “The Searchers”.
They are all part of John Ford's "company." Wayne, Harry Carey Jr, Ward Bond, the sheriff's wife Mae Marsh, stunt rider/actor Ben Johnson, and Hank Worden. All of them were in The Searchers.
She's already seen The Searchers
Please watch "Stagecoach" from 1939. Directed by John Ford, it is the film that made John Wayne a star. It won 2 Oscars, and was nominated for 5 more, including Best Picture and Director.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this movie. I think the movie needed some darkness, but I think they got the balance right, especially with the men's spiritual return.
To recommend everything is to recommend nothing, so I'd like to suggest "FORT APACHE" as your next Wayne movie. Ty.❤️
Great reaction. Just Love Ward Bond. Great actor
You should know that there is a 1929 version entitled: HELL'S HEROES and a 1936 version also called 3 GODFATHERS.
The version you watched is, of course, the only one with John Wayne ( so, it gets a lot of attention ).
Some suggested, great movies:
_Captains Courageous,_ 1939.
_Love with the Proper Stranger,_ 1965
_The Apartment,_ 1961
In _Captains Courageous,_ Lionel Barrymore proves to me he was a great actor. If I re-watched _Captains Courageous_ not more than 2-3 weeks after watching _It's a Wonderful Life,_ and still, he was able to make me forget Henry Potter, as he portrayed captain Disko Troup as a lovable and sympathetic character. I only realized it had been so close, recently But I didnt even think of Mr Potter while watching _Captains._ It is such a beautiful, heart breaking movie, deeply sincere about the most important things. Manuel teaching Harvey something about dyijng and going to be with the Savior, is part of the hunger Harvey didn't realize he had. In the middle of a luxury sail on an ocean liner with his business tycoon father, he falls off the ship into an adventure he didnt know he needed. It is just the most heartbreaking and real movie.
Good choice Madison, I always liked this movie.
El Mirage Land and Cattle Company
El Mirage, Arizona
I've seen it years ago, it's a wonderful movie.
I knkw im late to the party but a hidden gwm western that I believe has a slight xmas vibe is Will Penny starring Charlton Heston.
Oh ya!! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL 💖🥳🎉 also I've seen a lot of Westerns but never heard of this one! I've seen some Roy Rogers among what I've mentioned on the first comment. Crazy! Peace ☮️
Been a long long time (50 years give or take) since I saw this movie, and you did a great job of it. Still excited about The Cowboys.
Great movie! Excellent reaction! Thanks❤
great film. loved review. im old yet time turns thank you.
Hello, an excellent selection. Thank you.
I like a lot of John Wayne movies but this has to be my favorite.
I look forward to this rea tonight. A very good that has filmed a few times. There is a nice silent verson made in 1916 which starred Harry Carey senior. His son Harry Carey jr stars with John Wayne in this 1948 version. Unfortunately I'll have to catch your reaction in day or so. Enjoy the film, your reactions are great.
While it's definitely not my favorite John Ford film, this one has been a favorite of mine for a long, long time.
One I'd like to recommend is The Long Voyage Home. Another John Ford film with John Wayne in it, though it's not a western.
You're the best Madison.
Love this movie! Love your reaction! Happy New Year!!
All the towns Bob mentioned had Biblical names.. Damascus, New Jerusalem. He mentions Cairo too, but that doesn't appear in the Bible.
I have a John Wayne 🍿 movie that isn't the 1 st to come up but it is my sentimental favorite 1947 Angel & the Badman. Hint Wayne us the badman. It's practically a western romp com 😳 . I avoided John Wayne movies growning up then I saw Wayne's last movie The Shootish with Ron Howard which instantly became my favorite until I discovered Angel & The Badman. I have no doubt you will 💕
Most Magnificent Western Movie reacting lady! John Wayne is always good on Friday! Many Thanks! Happy New Years! Hope you enjoyed this! Kudos on the attire! Secret: Red accent goes well with you skin tone! Be well and thanks again! Oh might want to check out some Randolph Scott!
Audie Murphy was the most decorated soldier of WWII and he made some great western movies like "Seven Ways from Sundown"..." Tumbleweed"...."Ride A Crooked Trail"..."The Wild and the Innocent" and "Destry"
You should watch the 1936 "Three Godfathers" and 1929 "Hell's Heroes" (adapted from the same book). The three protagonists aren't lovable like they are in the 1948 "Three Godfathers" version you reacted to. In the earlier versions and the book, they're a genuinely bad bunch of cutthroats (they even consider r@ping the woman in the wagon at first), but through the story, they discover their capacity for compassion and sacrifice for the baby. Of the two darker versions, I like "Hell's Heroes" better. The 1936 version has a love story that feels forced and out of place, and the characters' redemption is made more ego strokingly public than in the 1929 version.
"Red River", Cheyenne Autumn", "The Professionals", and "How the West Was Won" are definitely worth reactions...! (add "Two Rode Together" and "Winchester 73"to the must see)
Love the westerner
4:06 If someone knows the egg shell in the coffee pot trick let me know. I like to boil my coffee in a percolator when camping and can't quit keep all the grounds in there without going into the cup.
The trick does help settle the grounds in the pot somewhat, but its main effect is to counteract the acidic aspects of the coffee. Makes it more mellow in flavor. Keeping the grounds out of your cup involves doing things like using a smooth steady pour out of the pot or pouring through a strainer or cheesecloth .
Start with one or two eggs for an average sized pot. Crack and use the eggs as you normally would, setting the shells aside. Then rinse the eggshells out using hot water and measure out and prepare to brew your coffee as usual, adding the shells after crushing them in your hand. Add your water and brew as you usually do.
@@jameslongest6410 Thanks I will give that a try. Like most things I think it'll be trial and error until I perfect it.
When I would use a regular drip coffee maker, the grounds would sometimes overflow over the top of the filter while brewing and get into the coffee pot.. so I started putting another filter on top of the grounds. Idk if that principle would apply to a percolator.
@@bossfan49 Haven't had a problem with drip pot overflow in a long time unless the spring breaks. In a percolator basket I wrap it up best I can, but grounds still seep through. I've heard about this egg trick in more than one western. I don't know how coffee was made in the 19th Century, if they had no good way of keeping the grounds seperated. Being on the frontier there'd be less sophisticated devices or not everyone could afford the fancy stuff. As the previous person said, the egg shells help cut down the acidity. That's why I was wondering if there was a certain technique or validity to this movie legend.
I love your reactions, that I have seen so far. I am pretty sure, that you would love another movie as well. I'm thinking about "Driving Ms. Daisy". It's a really oldschool movie, that will sture your feelings around in all directions. Hope that you will react to it. I'd love that.
If'n ya like Westerns ...as you seem to, have you considered watching 'The Ballad of Buster Scruggs' by the Coen brothers?
It's an anthology of 5 or 6 Western stories, but which are rather more snappy than 'traditional' old Hollywood westerns.
I'd love to see how you react to that.
some neglected westerns to see:
The Westerner with Gary Cooper
The Oxbow Incedent with Henry Fonda
Destry Rides Again with James Stewart
Angel and the Badman with John Wayne
Wagon Master with Ben Johnson and Harry Carry Jr
The Tall T with Randolph Scott
Blood on the Moon wih Robert Mitchum
Will Penny with Charlton Heston
Cowboy with Glenn Ford and Jack Lemmon
The Shakiest Gun in the West with Don Knotts
Westward the Women (1951)
_Stagecoach_ is another Ford western based on a short story that was a Christian allegory, "The Stage to Lordsburg". When the camera does that big closeup of Ringo when he appears on the stage road, it is not to make John Wayne a star, as anti-spiritual people tend to say, but because the Ringo Kid is "the" most important character. He is an unusually good and generous-hearted kid, an innocent criminal. Yet nothing will keep him from his important work of justice in Lordsburg. He wants to see Dallas treated like a lady, just like the respectable woman is treated. And this is a spoiler, but when he finds out about Dallas's life. when he sees what her life has been, and he still loves her and wants to marry her, it is a beautiful, deeply touching allegory of the grace and love of God for us sinners.
Great reaction, Madison. Have a Happy New Year - see you in January.
As schmalzy and saccharine as this adaptation of Peter B. Kyne's 1913 novel "The Three Godfathers" is, I can't help liking it for its charismatic stars and its "feel good" positivity.
Merry Christmas!
Next year!, the only other John Wayne Christmas them film. Donovan's Reef.
This was the fifth movie of this story. There were two sulent movies and this was the third sound movie.
happy new year and good health to you , you look amazing in that outfit :)
Loved this movie even though the mexican is very stereotypical. Getting water from catus is possible during that era by burning the thorns off or scraping them. My people call them nopal and prepare several dishes with them. Noawdays u can get them prepealed or with thorns at the nearest mexican grocery aisle.
MERRY Christmas and Feliz Ano Nuevo Madison
This is a good one and that I didn't see until I was an adult. But just a friendly reminder that The Big Country is still a great movie and you should watch it.
This version is Three Godfather's is a remake, the original is from 1936
Ok lady you caught my attention with the John Wayne and you saying you're a fan and so your channel I did scan. Only seen 1 J W movie RIO BRAVO. Nice! Dean Martin did great. Hope you have fans that recommend El Dorado, a twin to Rio Bravo with Robert Mitchum as the sheriff and James Caan the youngster. Also a must BIG JAKE and THE COWBOYS!! Got tons and TONS of Western ideas fir ya! More John Wayne and; Audie Murphy, Glenn Ford, James Stewart, James Garner and many more! You best be doing one a week iffin you spect to catch up! I'll be watching 🤠 Peace 🕊️☮️
Nice summary.
3 troubled men and a baby... Was The Hangover based on this??!! 🤣🤣🤣
Great video! If I may, I highly recommend She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. ❤
Can you react to creeping in my soul by cryoshell? It’s got a creepy vibe to it, you’d love it.
Never heard of this movie before. If I may divert to comment that you look beautiful today in your lovely tartan dress Madison.
Hi Madison, fantastic review. I also absolutely love 3 Godfathers. I just discovered your channel and binged on several videos. Great stuff, keep up the good work. 👍👍
You absolutely NEED to watch and review some more Stanley Kubrick and Sam Peckinpah, 2 of America's greatest directors. From Kubrick I'd recommend Paths of Glory, Dr Strangelove, 2001 A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange and Barry Lyndon. From Peckinpah I'd recommend Ride the High Country, Straw Dogs, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia and Cross of Iron. These are all absolute Masterpieces of American cinema. But they're VERY dark, disturbing, depressing and distressing. And extremely thought provoking. I'd be very interested in your opinions.
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying my reactions!😊🙏🏻
Hi Madison,
I have a special John Wayne movie for you... he plays a tough ranch owner and evil trail boss.
Red River (1948)
John Wayne Montgomery Clift Walter Brennan
Its about the first cattle drive up the Chisholm Trail... one of the top western movies of all-time 🤠
( I was gonna put Best Western... well you see 😂😂😂)
