Thanks to you, I did a variation on this successfully! I placed a slice of potato I had scored on one side in a container of compost I got from my garden pile. I punched a few holes in the lid, stored the container on the floor of my garage to prevent freezing and waited 3-4 weeks. When the potato started to decompose, I noticed the surface looked slimy. When I checked with a hand lens, I saw the micro worms. Next I scraped the worms off and placed them in some cooked oatmeal. Let them reproduce, then voila! Saved me $12 plus shipping!
I didn't expect this to work, but it did! I buried 5 potato haves partially hallowed out with hole down across my yard (Arkansas) and marked them with white flags, left them for about 6 days, then dumped them into a large jar with oatmeal, yeast, misted with spray bottle. I forgot about them for a couple weeks with a coffee filter lid, and checked expecting nothing, to see it FILLED with micro worms. :D So I'm going to split the mega culture into smaller containers and supplement my betta fry. I red too much microworms causes them not to develop correctly though.
Great tutorial! Thank you for sharing. I never knew you could raise these. I have a Betta inside and goldfish outside. I was looking for live foods for them all and found your video. I can't wait to try.
This is (as far as I know) the original method for starting a microworm culture (make a hole in a potato and bury it in soil outdoors). It’s mentioned in aquarium books from the mid-20th century. Of course, your job is a lot easier if you can get a starter from someone who is already culturing microworms. But if you can’t, do this.
Really cool Video was helpful .. but a request could you show us how to prepare Delphinia the same way to create at home please it would be really useful if possible thank you :)
Interesting, but it will have to wait, it is already snowing here. :( I wonder if different climates and soil types have different microworms, or possibly none at all? does potting soil or peat moss contain microworms?
It's a great way to find microworms in nature! but for culturing I prefer porridge only (without yeast) and in full light - I've been keeping them for half a year, very productive and easy.
very interesting, i'm just starting my first tropical tank and of course want to feed my fish the best diet possible. Do you just keep the culture in a tub? Inside or out?
theantinwofish: I'm very sorry for a terribly belated response, I didn't notice your question in time. I keep the culture in the garden (Wales, UK) and use the culturing method described here: www.tropicalfishforums.co.uk/index.php/topic,163402.0.html
yo thanks man you save my betta fry....i don't no where to find microworm starter but after seeing your video i can make my own.. great work Dude keep it up!!
These are not grindals. These will never get bigger than they are shown. Tiny wigglers. Great for fry, tetras and small fish. Grindals look like baby earthworms and are larger
Can i change the oatmeals with bread slice? I see someone doing it with breads and milk, but i havent oatmeal and milk Dont ask me for buying it btw,im on a crysis now😭 Thanks
quinmallory: It is a good question. I thought a lot about that too. As far as I understand, fish parasites can only be brought from other aquariums or those natural rivers and ponds, which are inhabited by wild fish. Terrestrial things should be harmless.
I tried it but instead of oatmeal I used bread and water and it’s been two days until a week all I see is a white fuzz or moldy thing on the bottom is that usual
is it possible to keep the microworm culture in 1 container for a month ? like after the harvest you will put some yeast or oatmeal again on the same container. does the microworm culture grow? or its good for 1 harvest .
hi, i tried this method. did every process. however when i put the container in a store room, then after 3 days, it has molds. is this failed? should i redo everything? where did i go wrong?
No, you can't. Because the starter is very stinky and maybe can break down the water parameters... You need to culture it in culture media and then harvest the worm that crawl out from the culture media ... It safer I think ...
It's easy to start microworm. But it hard to keep it! I already made one but you need to do another process to the next week!(Until it look perfect and smell good!🤔)
Yang Rithysak I would recommend to make one culture first and when they start crawling up harvest them and put them in a another container with new mix of oatmeal .. then you have clean microworms...
A put my potato in the soil for a week and mines still hard but I don’t know if it works I found in the middle something crawling not worms but very little white and small like dots should I still complete the process?
No it will not work if it's ur neighbor's tree... If the microworms still grow, they will be eaten only by the neighboring tank fry... Not the fry from the tank where u feed them to...
+Rockitty Lima as i said in the description. It will More effective while the soil is half wet after rainy day. Or you can trick it with water it every day.

Super demonstration
Very clear and simple even I can understand thank you sir, if you know any other type of culture please post in a video.

Thank you so much. I'm a begining Betta breeder and this was amazingly simple. To bad i didn't find it sooner
So it works?
Thank you so much for this! The fish shops near me don't sell live cultures so it's hard for me to find food for fry :)
+Luculencia you're welcome, that same, just like my chase. so i decide to experiment and try to make it by myself :D
Your video was so great now I can make my own microworm culture
Great idea! Gonna use this to make food for my angelfish fry, thanks a lot
Hi~ how did it go? Did you try it?
Thank you! Thumbs up. Subscribed.
your videos are so satisfying to watch

Daphnia magna rice porridge?
thanks for telling us it smells gross. will look for an alternative :p
Nice one! Subscribed ! Btw what do you do when culture is finished? Do I need to do the same thing with the potato again or....?
You can use the harvest as new starter culture, no need do the potato again.
Awesome! I 'll definitely give it a try. Thanks a lot!
Did it work?
yo thanks man you save my betta fry....i don't no where to find microworm starter but after seeing your video i can make my own.. great work Dude keep it up!!

title: Microworm culture without starter
4:16: now add starter into each container
simple logic, he made his own starter that's what he meant on his video title.
R u dumb??
what a dumb
Can i change the oatmeals with bread slice? I see someone doing it with breads and milk, but i havent oatmeal and milk
Dont ask me for buying it btw,im on a crysis now😭
Thanks
I only use water and slice breed, putting yeast will make the culture smelly ☺
So do u have to use the outside soil or just some store bought soil?
He used outside soil
In my recommendation for 1 year! Wtf! Finally had to see
Thank you THIS is simple I think this culture is very hard thanks sir
I've seen this comment in the list but no real answer, how do you know your not getting anything harmful to the fish?
quinmallory: It is a good question. I thought a lot about that too. As far as I understand, fish parasites can only be brought from other aquariums or those natural rivers and ponds, which are inhabited by wild fish. Terrestrial things should be harmless.
quinmallory if you feed too much microworm they wont grow ventral fins. Thats the problem on feeding m.worms on bettas.
@@Baitangina in earth outside you ll also will get tapeworms incl. eggs of them..and those will harm you and your fishes.Deadly to humans and fishes
Like it & do u take any soil from the middle of the pottato?
Love this technique never new about it now I don’t have to buy the stater no more

Nicely done
so there is only microworm in the potato? would there be any other form of worms or bugs that may get in there as well?
no. the microworms might came from the soil.. he plant the potato back in the soil so that the microworms go to the potato and use it as a starter
Can we use bread instead of oat meal???
Yes bro I did it with bread and it work ❤️❤️
Thank you so much for this great video
eres el mejor hermano muchas gracias bendiciones 😍😩

+Yang Rithysak that's right because it's diy not made by commercial microworm starter.
Yang Rithysak I would recommend to make one culture first and when they start crawling up harvest them and put them in a another container with new mix of oatmeal .. then you have clean microworms...
+Glenn Gaming And Fish Keeping that's right. we must re culturing it to make clean microworm & make the smell better than first culture.

Well explain thanks for the video bro
what if you see springtails on your potato? will you still get microworms??
How to know if my potato went bad after the 1 week bury? And can I still use it?
Isnt this bad for the fish as it is a parasite?
How often do you change oatmeal and how?

Any problem with out yeast??
Does 'Instant active dry yeast work'' ?
it should
Yep
I havent get a tree in my garden my neighbour has but its on the other side about 3 feet away will it still work
No it will not work if it's ur neighbor's tree... If the microworms still grow, they will be eaten only by the neighboring tank fry... Not the fry from the tank where u feed them to...
What's the song? Do microworms grow up to be big worms?
No
I tried this I left my potato there for 2 weeks when I dug it up it had no worms and it was still hard
