My 3 year old had so much fun this year and got to see other children dressed up too, it was wonderful for his development- especially since he was born during Covid. hi there! I would like to open the conversation on this topic with some insight from the perspective of disabled folks. sometimes children are in a position where they can not speak or interact with adults or strangers they do not know. (autistic kids, mute or deaf kids, kids abused by adults, etc.)
      I do love that Halloween is a way for kids to socialize, however I dont think its very fair to disabled or generally unwell children that all kids have to interact in order to get candy. this can be very othering. also, children shouldn't have to disclose their disabilities or traumas in order to be treated with candy on halloween.
      absolutely try to socialize with people on Halloween, but don't treat them differently if they do not interact or respond, please!

As an adult I don't talk to any neighbors or anything. Luckily my 3 kids came out super talkative and friendly they even find mom friends for me 😂😂

      What i took from that convo was that its generally good to get kids to socialize because that's inevitable once you grow up. Im sure they wont encourage forcing a kid with down syndrome to talk. An unfortunate part of podcasting is that its a conversation where you cant write out the perfect script that includes every caveat or preface every sentence that includes all perspective
      That being said its not to say that you're wrong or that its not something that they can improve on, but just an inevitability that comes with conversation

    The only problem with expecting people to say trick or treat is that there are neurodivergent kids that are only semi-vocal to completely non-vocal, it’s not up to them to tell you their neurotype to justify them getting candy on a night they’ve tried to participate in- it can be super dangerous for us when we’re kids to tell strangers we’re autistic or have ADHD as predators seek us out the most. I think Keith says how it’s about learning to interact socially which I think for non verbal kids seems to still be the experience. Loved seeing your comment bc it highlights that not all the ways that Halloween helps our kids learn to socialize don’t mean specifically saying the trick or treat. For children with communication differences it’s an opportunity for them to navigate socializing in a way that suits them too, and they get to practice 40 times if they want to. A child in our cul de sac is nervous with strangers and has some verbal tics when nervous so he came to our porch 8-9 times and we welcomed him like new every time.
      I’m not even a big spooky scary Halloween vibe lover but have loved it since becoming a parent and couldn’t pinpoint why. I’ve never heard someone phrase it how Keith did here that the biggest thing about it is socializing our kids. He’s totally right ❤

    • @GeekeryMade
      @GeekeryMade 2 года назад +12

      Saying that nonverbal kids still need that socializing experience from Halloween is a weird take. Yeah it's helpful for some kids, but speaking as a someone who deals with selective mutism Halloween was just a bunch of stranger adults getting annoyed at me for not being able to say "Trick or treat" and refusing to let me have any candy. I couldn't speak at all because I was overloaded and the forced social interactions made it worse, especially as I noticed a lot of houses that made a big deal out of it didn't force all the kids to say it, just me because I looked uncomfortable. I hated Halloween until I was an adult because of this "we have to socialize them" mind set. That's their parents job, not some rando's on one of the most sensory overloading holidays of the year. Sure I learned how to interact with a stranger but from the stand point of they'll be mean and treat me different than the other kids and exclude me if I don't do what they say. It was so toxic. Ya'll aren't helping non-verbal kids on this holiday by doing this, you're re-enforcing that they have to hide that they have a difference or a disability to be safe.

    I totally feel Zach! I too have an Autoimmune Disorder as well as anxiety and depression and getting the pharmacy and dr.s to talk to each other and fill my meds on time is so draining. I literally spent 45 min today at Walgreens and I still walked out without 2 of my meds.

    Miles- you can keep someone alive for hours doing cpr
    Zach- prove it
    Me- my uncle had a heart attack, and was down for over an hour. The only reason they kept going was because it was slow in the er. He was pissed they brought him back (his husband died a few years prior, and said he saw him, and was at the gates, and then was pulled back into his body)

    CPR: Good Samaritan laws only apply to humans. I took a pet CPR & First Aid class via The Frontline Coalition and learned that you MUST obtain verbal consent from the pet owner in order to provide pet CPR or first aid, since pets are legally property.

    The thing about CPR is that you need to do it fast and deep enough. The beat of Stayin' Alive is what I've been taught, multiple times, and the ribs are likely to crack. It's very hard work, and I commend those who are brave and present enough to try to save a life!

    I love you guys and have admired you two for the longest time. I do want to say, though, that on Halloween, there are some kids who are nonverbal or have some kind of speech impediment/disability. I used to require every kid to say something too, but then realized that there are some kids who really really really don’t want to or cannot. My only requirement now is just kindness and patience. You ain’t getting no candy if you a meany.
